Haslem Reiterates His Desire For New Stadium!
-
FROM SBNATION:
"We've been very public in Cleveland that we're going to look at everything, except the helmet tone," Haslam said. "We do want to enhance the stadium to make a great experience for the fans. What that looks like, I don't know. I'm not a stadium guy. We're going to look at it, because it's all about the fans."
Haslam has been clear about his desire to fix up the stadium. In August, he discussed the stadium with the Cleveland City Council. An offhand remark about putting a dome over the facility sparked a small tsunami of shock.

Question: Are you seriously considering putting a dome over Cleveland Browns Stadium?
Haslam: I want to be respectful to City Council. I think what I said is, ‘Listen, we’re going to look at all options.’ What I’ve learned is in the NFL is you better be really careful when you say something like that. Is a dome a possibility? Yes. I’m not smart enough to tell you if it’s two percent or 50 percent. We’ll investigate and see. We do want to do this: We do want to have more activities at the stadium. I think it’s good for the city, the county, the state, and it’s good for the Browns brand.
Question: Who pays for stadium improvements?
Haslam: I think it would be premature because I don’t have a clue, and I can look you all in the eye and say that, how much money we’re going to spend. One of the first things we’re going to do is -- and I’ve said this numerous times -- have the quality architects around the country that specialize in this kind of work come in and take a look at things. We need to have some enhancements for the fans. When I was with the Steelers, when I would go to another stadium I didn’t really pay attention to ‘Is it fan friendly or is it not?’ Now I pay close attention. I think there’s some things that need to happen over the next one, two, three, four years.
Question: Like what?
Haslam: I think that’s up for debate. I think you have to look at scoreboard. I think you have to look at probably putting ribbons around the stadium. Some of it doesn’t cost money. Some of it may be better music and establishing traditions. That certain music and certain plays are shown at certain times. And let’s face it, the best thing is … have a good team
-
I think he's being smart in covering all his bases. If its feasible cost wise to put a dome on the stadium, he would be dumb not to with all of the other events that could take place in a covered stadium in the winter time.
I'm not as opposed to a dome as I once was. I'd there's no change to the helmets and we'll see what else he has in mind. I like that he's going to be involved.

I thought we were stupid not to put a dome on our home... Or at least a retractable one. I understand that playing football in the snow can be fun, but let's be honest, we won't see a Superbowl here, and we have all that real estate not being used during the off season because it has no roof. Really was a bad idea IMO. Think about it, some are willing to go see a bad team play in comfortable conditions. Some are not going to see a bad team play in crappy 10 degree weather. Something to think about.

another dumb response from a child. sure they could use the stadium for other events in the winter. but what events are that huge that come to cleveland as a venue?
put a roof on the stadium and you give up our home field advantage. packers have a dome? giants? patriots?

From a 37 year old child... again high school mentality and comebacks, you got me there. Man, I guess I will go home and cry now.
Back to a civilized discussion with anyone that removed themselves from high school.
You ask what events because you don't know, because they don't come because they can't come. Also, these events are not necessarily events that take place in the winter months. Home field advantage is only an advantage when you have a product on the field that can take advantage of it. The pride that we have in being browns fans is in the Team. Not the stadium. Browns Identity is not found in the stadium. It used to be that way, but when the new stadium went up, that nostalgia was gone. The Browns are a FOOTBALL team, not a Stadium that happens to host a football team.

What advantage do you speak of?
We haven't won a championship in 48 years and have had a pretty crappy team for the last 12 years.
Again, what advantage are you talking about??
Sorry Mick....I always try to be respectful and thoughtful in my replies unless responding to total crap, but I don't think you have given your reply adequate thought.
Heck....Red Right 88 would have never been called had the field not been frozen solid.
I'd say that advantage worked entirely in favor of the Raiders.

really wasn't wanting to. it's just all this bullshit talk RIGHT NOW about things like stadiums and uniforms instead of looking at how haslam is going to form his FO, who he'll keep on the coaching staff, what direction and style of football will he want/demand to be played in cleveland.
our history is so deep that putting a roof on any stadium we play in on the coast of lake erie is sacreligous. do you think the packers will EVER put a dome on lambeau field or the bears on soldier stadium?
well i feel we are in that same stock of historic football franchises and to have a bunch of homos come in the day the new ownership took over and ask about uniforms and stadiums is fucking insane.
how about worrying if we last another decade? how about what you think will happen if we go 4 and 12 this year? not about brown pms 345 layered with brown pms 354 go together and make a nice looking jersey.

i agree with that. but you give me that game with those same circumstances and 9 times out of 10 we win that game.
ask parcells, shanahan, buddy ryan and others about home field advantage when it comes to having swirling winds and doors that can be opened and closed depending on the circumstances.
i'd love to see atlanta come and play here in december when we are more evenly matched and see how they can play on a sunday night on the shores of lake erie.
goners.

I'm happy with bringing money into Cleveland with events like concerts, college basketball tournaments, maybe a bowl game(not sure if NFL stadiums do bowl games but I heard it brought up on the radio).

Chill out one the potential Super Bowl talk with a Dome. One of the stipulations is the city have a bazillion hotel rooms available for the event.
So tell me how many of these major "events" in Indy couldn't go on outdoors? Lucas Oil Events Really, that city is unchanged after their SB.
Ford Field is nice- it's also for pussies.

So from here on out..every topic in this forum needs to have your approval to talk about, got it. I'll make sure to go through my check list first before giving my OPINION.

For out of towners who only come to Cleveland to see Football games a few times a year, I can understand their reasoning for not putting on a dome. But for someone who lives in a suburb of Cleveland, I think it would be a great idea. I believe it would attract a lot more revenue for the city such as concerts, bowl games, and possibly a Super Bowl. When you drive by the cold, empty hulk of a stadium during the winter and just see it sitting there useless, you have to wonder if something could be done to put it to use during the off season. And since I actually contributed to the construction costs thru paying taxes, I believe my opinion does matter here.

Can't we all just get along? We should close this thread with a big group hug... lol

Stupid is as stupid does. And your stupid does. The first 95 things needed out of a list of 100 things is:
A winning team.
Now just repeat that 94 more times.
The mentality of the fans is top notch. It is the team's on field performance that has not been top notch for 20 years.
And, by the way, the "dome" for the stadium would NOT be for the benefit of the Browns at all. for the 10 games played there per year the current conditions would be fine. (maybe a few attractions...like a better scoreboard...would be good). That dome would be to make the stadium more utilitarian for the other 354 days of the year.
-
If we build a dome, we would get things like:
NCAA Basketball Championships.
UFC Fight (although I suppose the Cav's home could do that)
New Bowl Game
High School Championships (assuming Columbus no longer wants them)
Olympics potential
Track and Field Championships
Concerts
But without a dome, you can't even TRY to lure these types of things.
