  • Its a start but they need more than your traditional duty weapon, and you can't make it the fat old senior cop counting the days until retirement thinking its a cush job. You need a guy who can react quickly and overcome the odds of what these assailants are armed with.

The nation's largest gun-rights lobby is calling for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings."

The National Rifle Association broke its silence Friday on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead.

The group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference that, quote, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

Most of the schools in Cleveland area already have that. Small towns might have a problem with it.

This is entirely incorrect. There are a lot of schools in inner city Cleveland like the constellation charter schools that have no security except for mag locks and intercoms.

I know the city of Cleveland have security and police on standby, not sure about the charter schools. So it's not entirely incorrect. Parma and North Royalton also have police until a certain time when the doors are locked.

  • Either way it's a sad state of affairs. Do you think people who grew up in the 50's could even fatham shit like this happening.

  • Charter schools are still schools and they are completely un defended. Mag locks are all well and good but they won't stop the glass doors being shot out.

Shaker heights schools don't have security. I've walked onto the grounds of their middle and high schools myself without anyone so much as asking me what I'm doing there.

I'm doing work, of course, but they don't know that.

  • I agree it's a sad state of affairs. It's a reflection of the culture we live in today.

Unfortunately, without making the school a prison with bullet proof doors and glass, and armed towers surrounding it, there is only so much protection you can provide.

I grew up in the 50's and I can.

We went from prayer in schools and watching Howdy Duty and Roy Rogers to no prayer and playing violent video games

I agree it's a sad state of affairs. But should we just bury our heads and hope bad things won't happen? Or should we try to stop the inevitable from happening?

This is one of the problems with America today. Government is making laws on what they WISH would be and for the sake of "civility" refusing to face reality. Forget about what kind of America you want to live in. The monkey is out of the box, there is no going backwads to more civil times. We have to live in the here-and-now, and in the here-and-now we the people face dangers every day.

Think about this, cops do not stop crimes. When is the last time you read about a cop stopping a rape? It just doesn't happen, cops gather evidence and tryt o recreat crimes, but they aren't there to prevent them.

WHen a woman is raped, there are only two people involved and the woman is the ONLY human being on earth who has any ability to prevent a rape, is the woman herself, by having a gun.

If GOd forbid I ever encounter one of these fucktards, I want to at least have a chance of saving people and myself.

Holy shit, I agree with Ghoolie. Police are a reactionary force, not a preventative one. Ghoolie, unfortunately it's not as simple as everyone having a gun. It's great for the rape example you listed, but let's take the Aurora shooting. You're in a dark theater, and all of a sudden you see smoke bombs go off and you hear gunfire. Luckily for you, you are carrying your .40, and are going to put this asshole down. Unfortunately, 9 other people in the theater have the same idea, and they all pull out their guns. I don't think anyone is going to like the outcome there.

A suicide type killer, who has no regard for his life is the most dangerous. They won't be deterred by armed police/security. They won't care if people could be armed or not, they just want to kill as many as possible before getting killed or killing themselves.

  • Anyone who believes that armed guards in the schools wouldn't make things a little safer let me ask you this:

Why not save money by removing all the armed guards from shopping centers banks airports at cetera?

    WSS

  • My guess would be cost benefit analysis.

Even if they are not deterred they could possibly be stopped.

    That's at least something.

    Because scary terrorism.

  • The school where the President sends his children has armed guards.

    Before the Secret Service arrived.

More do as I say, not as I do bullshit.

Around my town business' pay off duty police maybe $20 a hour.

I suppose you could hire your own certified security officers who work for the school system....pay and provide benefits on a level with a teacher....you would have lot's of cops applying for those positions.

30-40 K per school is a realistic amount that could be raised. A middle of the road security monitoring system with 4-5 cameras would be easy enough to put in place.

Also, something I have said for years, every parent with a child in school should be required to pay X dollars for the extra security and OR be required to work a day a year as a hall monitor. Just stand watch with walkie talkie in hand at various posts throughout the school.

I am not big on mandating to business, but one I would is when a parent is assigned a verified "school" day, they don't get docked pay. Their place of employment has to pay them their normal days pay, be it a full time salary or the 4 hours they averaged down at the local restaurant.

Getting more parents in to these schools would help control the kids if they see their parents, or the parents of friends walking the halls.

On any given school day you might have 4-5-6 parents to help keep watch.
