Psl's No Longer Required At Stadium

The Browns Board

  • FWIW, this sounds more reasonable, no PSLs for the nosebleeds that have been pretty darn empty the last couple of years.

"Well, after writing the above I checked the Browns website before sending this email. Rumors about dropping PSLs turn out to be ridiculous, as i assumed. What they're trying to do is to sell more of the crappy unsold seats, and u probably know that most of our games and those of other bad NFL teams, have not been truly sold out the past couple seasons. So the Browns point out that there have always been some seats (think dog pound) that haven't required a PSL, and they're just expanding that to some other sections of unsold seats. They also say that current season ticket holders will have 1st shot at buying "additional" season tickets designated for non-PSL before the general public. They also say for current season ticket holders these additional tickets will still carry the advantages as if they were bought with a PSL, but i don't know what that means because i can't think of any advantage (unless the non-PSL seats like the pound are not renewable or maybe not associated with upgrade seniority).

So u might share that info with your board."

  • I understand that, but I think it goes beyond the nosebleeds. People can buy in to any section that has unsold seats...that is what a ticket rep told me yesterday morning when I called.

As John said, the way this was released and communicated was pretty poor.

I called in yesterday as well and Peen is right. I was told that somebody off the street can buy season tickets with no PSL's and can get located closer in than I am at now. We will however be given the option to move our seats closer before ANY tickets are sold to the general public. However when new people buy tickets as long as they renew every year they keep their same seats.

So in essence you are being "forced" to move your seats forward this year. If everybody does so then we will all have better seats than those people who are just now buying in. However if for whatever reason people do not relocate their seats this year their will indeed be people off the streets with better seats than we currently have. So I asked the guy. So if that happens and two years from now I want to move my seat forward and you have somebody closer who never paid for a PSL do I get their seat since I did and I have been a season ticket holder longer? He couldn't answer.

Tickets are in my brothers name so he will be calling our rep and shaking her down so I will let you all know what we end up getting to compensate us for the screwing we are all getting. That way you can call and try to get some kind of compensation as well.

Maybe the new owner would prefer if we quit buying tickets and we didn't sell out games. Maybe that is what we should do? I will tell you that I think this is worse than Modell moving the team. Haslam is screwing people for absolutely no reason. If you want to drop PSL's then give me my damn PSL money back you thief.

The way I have seen the PSL's was an initial non refundable deposit for the priveledge of being a season ticket holder. Surely you guys bought these seats in locations you wanted at the time or ones you at least could afford. I am seeing this as a pre cursor to the Browns raising the costs of all ticket prices dramtically from 2014 onwards. Getting rid of the PSL payments is one way of easing the displeasure that might come when ticket prices start going up in coming seasons. We have done well over the last few years with the cost of tickets, being in the bottom 4 or 5 teams for prices. so as much as it sucks to have forked out good money a few years ago for your PSL's, If you want the better seats then seems need to jump at the chance now to have better chance of getting them. PSL's could be reasons why some fans never bothered in the past to buy season tickets, so saying people coming off the street to grab the best tickets is maybe a bit much. I dont know the major ins and outs of how the Browns offered up previous better seats, but hopefully there will still be some incentives for existing season ticket holders.

It wasn't exactly like that Keith. On the initial offering, you could specify upper or lower deck, (or club) and put a number on how much you wanted to spend per seat. You had 3 choices. If you were serious about it, of course you went for the top $$ seats- the ticket office then doled them out on basis of seniority, and BTW, not the way I would have done it. As you'll see later on, they thought last row on the 50 upper deck was better than first five rows on the 10- absolutely not the case. 😕 I just e-mailed the guy I hold my PSLs with- IF in the unlikely event we can move into the "premo" sections- that would be 107-110 or 131-135 it will save us some money. Outside of Club level, those sections had the highest initial buy in cost. Incidentally- when the PSLs first went on sale, you needed 30+ years of seniority to have a shot at them. LOL, Don's 17 years literally got him last row in the upper deck on the 50, we've moved down since. We're currently in 111, and that's with 32 years of seniority, at least we shouldn't have to pay the upcharge in PSL prices upgrading- which would have been a couple thousand dollars IIRC.

To my mind, the initial fee wasn't that bad- it cost me $500 a year for three years to buy in with Don.

I don't think you understand fully that up until this point, PSL's have been a form of currency. You cannot just get what you want. If you wanted seats you got on a waiting list and waiting for years until seats opened up, or you found somebody who would sell you their PSL's. This was generally a better option, because your seats would be in the last 5 rows of the stadium if you got them from the Browns. If you wanted good seats and bought somebody's PSL's the premium could be triple the original PSL price, due to demand for a good seat. So for all of us who spent the money there is no more demand and no way to ever recoup the money spent. And the principle of it is just terrible.

As for your comment about prices. Well yes they are going to go up. The only reason they haven't in 4-5 years isn't because anybody cares about us (evident from this move) but because they can't since the team sucks so bad every year. And then they use that as a selling point like we are all stupid and don't realize it.

  • I get what you are all saying but unfortunately this is the side effects of the team being bad. Back when the team came back tickets were in very high demand and PSL's made perfect sense. Now that the Browns have been awful for essentially a decade I doubt there's hoards of people lining up to purchase them. This is just how business goes, when demand is low you have to offer up a cheaper alternative to spurn interest. The golf club near my house used to have a decent waiting list, a one time fee for being a member on top of annual dues and cost an arm and a leg to go to IF you could get a tee time. Since the economy has been in the shitter and tons of people lost work where I live now I can walk on basically any time I want for maybe 60% of the cost. I'm not saying it doesn't suck but that's life sometimes. Everyone who paid for PSL's bought at peak "market" time and now it's at an all time low. I'd still be surprised if they don't offer some sort of deal to PSL owners though.

In the latest news, PSL's will no longer be required to purchase season tickets.

I'd like to hear the feeling of those who currently hold PSL's.

To be honest, I am not totally happy with this. More on principle than the loss of any money that might be involved. As I have it figured, the $3000 I spent on my 2 seats was gone 8-9 years ago and I really never expected to sell my seats. I figured I'd just die and that would be that.

However this past year I decided I wanted Club seats. I contacted my ticket Rep last October and scheduled a tour of the clubs so my wife could see them. All was fine and dandy and the idea was sold. Now I fear people off the street have come in and taken the seats in the section I wanted. If this has happened, I am going to be royally pissed. I can't justify the super expensive seats. I need the cheapest club seats I can get, and fear those will be the first to go.

The process is I have to send in a transfer request by April 1st, and only accounts which have made payments will be considered for relocation. My fear is if I keep following the process, some eggbert is going to tell me there are no tickets available in the club because a bunch of people off the street just came in and bought them.

I am beginning to think I might just need to call the ticket office and buy the club seats and simply not renew my old ones. But that pisses me off as well. As I said, I expected to die with the seats and that would be that. I didn't expect to simply hand over $3000. Again, it isn't so much the money, but rather the idea of doing so that irritates me.

But, I might as well. This move for no PSL's pretty much removes any chance of ever selling them unless you hold what I consider a premium seat. Mine would be borderline at best....row 19 uppers, 45 yard line. Good seats, but not so good people would be willing to pay much when they can get seats for free in other locations.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

I haven't seen the story yet, but if they are declaring that you no longer need a PSL, but if you already have one it now has zero value ... this sounds like real trouble.

I think PSLs are stupid, but you can't sell them to people for 13 years and then tell them they are worthless.

Sounds like a class-action lawsuit and bad, bad, fan relations if this is true the way I am hearing it.

They will be when 20,000 people file a law suit against them

  • I just talked to my Ticket rep. and the conversation went as follows:

ME: What's going on with new season ticket buyers NOT having to buy PSL's?

Ticket rep: you will not have to purchase PSL's with 2013 season tickets

ME: I already have season tickets, but now the PSL's I HAD to buy in 1999 are worthless?

Ticket rep: No, they will end up being worth more, we are just not selling them any more, so we are cutting them off, your psls will actually go up in value because we will not be selling any more and you will need PSL seats in order to have the best locations

ME: so if someone who has tickets next to me stops buying them, those seats will not need psl's to be bought by someone else?

Ticket rep: if they were PSL's, someone with a PSL will move to them, through our relocation process. What section do you sit in?

    ME: 149

Ticket rep: oh yea, nobody without a PSL will be in the lower level. The lower level has been sold out of PSLs since 1999. The value in your PSL's will go up for sure

ME: what if no one moves to the seats next to me? will they be sold without psl's then?

Ticket rep: yes, but that will not happen

ME: How is my PSL's going to be worth more? I won't be able to sell them to anyone, when they can just buy season tickets without a PSL. Or if someone moves to my seats, they won't have to pay me for the PSL either?

Ticket rep: They will not be able to buy tickets in the lower level

Ticket rep: so anyone who wants to sit in the lower level will have to buy a PSL from our current PSL holders

Then he ended the chat session.

I agree, the psl agreement clearly states they hold no inherent value.

  • Do you not get what he's saying or what? That seems pretty straight forward to me and it makes perfect sense. People with PSL's are going to be in the lower levels, and the last thing you said was right. The lower level PSL's have been sold out for years and years and another PSL owner gets first crack at them which you know someone will take if another guy stops buying.

  • That is kind of how my conversation went.

I paid my seats in full this morning, but if I can't get the seats I want by paying them another $1000 so some dude off the street can get them before me, the Browns can suck my dick.

Check that, I wouldn't allow them the pleasure of sucking my dick.

If this happens, when I get my tickets I just paid $1404 for, I'll rip them up and never spend another dime in the state Ohio the rest of my life. Screw it. I've lost way more than $1400 in a single shot in my life.

  • The problem is that if I want to sell my PSL's no one is going to buy them. Why would someone pay me the $1000 per seat for the PSL's and then buy tickets, when they can just buy the tickets in another section?

Also, if I give up the tickets and another PSL owner gets them, that person doesn't have to pay for the new PSL.

So basically, they are worthless pieces of paper now. Even though they were worth $2000 yesterday

What aren't you understanding? The entire 100 level is SOLD OUT via PSLs. If you drop your seats- it's a virtual certainty they're going to go to another PSL holder, who incidentally DID pay for a seat license.

Let me give you a couple practical examples. You're in 149, corner end zone. I'm in 111, 20 yard line sideline. If I ever dropped my seats (of course I never will) think there wouldn't be a stampede from your section to get seat improvement? BTW, we've put in for seat improvement for years, we were only asking for one section over, and 10 rows higher. Trust me, unless you're willing to shell out $10,000 a seat on Craiglist or eBay- in between the 25 yard lines lower deck ain't happening. Those seats literally get handed down in wills.

If you ever dropped your seats- believe me, there's plenty of folks who own PSL nosebleeds who would be more than happy to move down. Now if you want to grouse that they didn't get upcharged for the move, you have a point.

That's part of my point. If the new owner of my seats doesn't have to pay more for a better psl then it's wrong. Also there is no guarentee that if someone moves from my section that those seats will be bought by a current psl owner. The sales rep told me so. The Browns should stipulate that if you are a new season ticket buyer and somehow seats become available in a PSL location, the new buyer has to buy the current PSL. AT this point, the new buyer does NOT have to buy the PSL It is TOTALLY unfair for me a PSL owner to sit next to someone who DIDN'T have to buy the PSL.

Seats have come open in my section every year. I get calls from the Browns asking, all the time, to buy them. Now, if I take them up on this offer, will I have to buy the PSL for those seats? I thought about buying 2 more seats in my section last year, and I would've had to buy the PSL for those seats, now I don't? If not then it's not fair to others in the same section to have to sit next to me if I didn't have to buy a PSL for those seats, like they did. And like I did back in 1999.

The problem is that if I want to sell my PSL's no one is going to buy them.

Larry, what aren't you understanding? PSL's have been sold all over the stadium. In many of those situations you aren't going to have other PSL owners swooping in.....why should I buy your PSLs when I can sit for free (no PSL) a few rows higher or a section over? There is more to the stadium than section 100 if you didn't know that.

  • Look I said before, but for those with psl's not in the bottom levels you're right. Unfortunately that's just life sometimes. I mean think about people like my brother who bought homes in 2007. He paid peak market price at almost 250k. Now the EXACT same house in the same neighborhood is around 150-170k. Of course it sucks but does that mean the realtors should try and sell at a price no one will buy?

That same brother just bought psl's for the panthers. They told him at the beginning this is a sunk cost and has no value. It's a risk everyone ran when you bought tickets.

  • As I understand it, the PSLs were sold initially to help with the owners cost to construct the Stadium.

I personally never did nor ever would pay for a PSL....but that is because I have only gone to a few games live over the years. I learned early on that the best seat in the house was the one in my house, not Al and Randy Lerners house.

Nevertheless I sympathize with all of you who laid out these bucks. I don't know how many PSL owners there are, but in my view all of you who did buy them should have an exclusive place in the stadium that are the best seats and that only you can sit in. You should all be granted an upgrade to club seat level or something for only the extra cost of the tickets.
