Cribbs To The Cardinals
-
All I hope is Haden or another young guy embodies what Cribbs did for Cleveland. Cribbs has the potential to statistically be the best returner of all time. He suffered through horrible regimes who rarely used the guy to the best of his abilities. I don't think he ever had the chance to be a great WR or even a solid #2 but he's a great all around football player. We aren't going to run into guys who WANT to be in Cleveland and played a pivotal role to the team's success. I'm surprised he went to Arizona though, that leads me to believe the Browns threw nickels at the guy to come back.

This board makes me feel like the IQ in northeast ohio is extremely low.
Football is a business as it has been for well over 50 years. There is no love or loyalty. Do you think that Jim Brown would have retired if he was able to get even a fraction of what they pay these players today?
The FO was hired to do a job and that job as stated by Banner is to build a winning team.
"Does this make us a better team? If the answer is yes, then we make the move. If the answer is no, we don't."

Cribbs is an Enigma that, while he still retains some value, the current FO didn't feel it weighed towards the positive for them.
Please feel free to go watch your favorite players on other teams, I personally will be watching the Cleveland Browns.

Fukc it. He's gone, move on. Quit crying.
-
I wonder if he could have been a better safety than the stream of suck that we've had for the last few years beside and before TJ.
Peterson returns kicks in AZ, it's not unprecedented to have a DB doing return work

All the time in Cleveland Cribbs always showed frustration from losing and seemed to come off as a guy that wanted to win above all else.
Makes you wonder how much more money Arizona offered him over New England, how much of a role did more money play in going to a losing team.
Maybe he believes he'll get more of an opportunity on offense in AZ..who knows.
Either way I think it's a disappointing decision by him, he's either a me guy or just a big phoney.
Would of loved to seen him get in where he could fit in with New England and finally win for once.

New england deal = less money but chance at the big one, still cold, moderate amounts of sewage.
Arizona deal= more money zero chance at the big one, hot as fuck , sewage dries in about a half hour.

Four days ago it was reported that Cribbs was joining the Cardinals. He even took the opportunity to post a nice goodbye for all of us. We all wished him well. Well some of us did anyway. So where is the contract? Still no contract. Does anybody else find this extremely odd?

Josh being Josh. Seems more like hes trying to be spiteful before the Cards offered him anything real. Love the player, Love the heart, tired of his out of place comments. Part of being a professional is knowing when to keep your mouth SHUT Josh...
Just sayin...

OK, so, there will be no movement on him for some time it appears. And he isn't coming back, so can we all just move along?
We should be asking something like "should we pick up Ted Ginn" or some other return man...or stick with Benjamin.
And who is going to be the teams torpedo on punt and KO returns without Cribbs there? Is that what Quentin Groves is for?

If by torpedo you mean gunner...then I answer that with "anybody."
Cribbs was a great gunner, but it's not a must-have position. It's a luxury. If you're over 200 lbs and run a sub 4.7, you can be a gunner.

Josh Cribbs' knee scope delaying free-agent deal with Arizona Cardinals, agent says
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Cribbs' free-agent signing with the Arizona Cardinals is on hold until he fully recovers from offseason arthroscopic knee surgery, agent JR Rickert told The Plain Dealer today.
Rickert said Cribbs, 29, passed his physical with the Cardinals, but that the club wanted the knee to be fully healed before they actually sign him, a period of about five weeks from now. Cribbs underwent the scope to repair a torn meniscus.
Does he expect the Cardinals to sign Cribbs after the five weeks?
"Yes, I'm assuming that,'' he said.
Rickert added, "I talked to the trainer. He passed the physical. Reports that he failed it are inaccurate.''
Rickert said Cribbs is not talking to other teams at this time, and that a report Monday night that he was deciding among the Cardinals, Giants and 49ers was false.
For now, it's just a matter of him strengthening the knee "and then we'll revisit it,'' Rickert said.

Boy, I disagree with that. And so, apparently does the NFL, as they have set aside a special position in the Pro Bowl for just such a person.
Sure, anyone of such a size can BE a gunner. That doesn't mean they are a good gunner. Certain players in history have been renowned for being a gunner: Bill Bates, Steve Tasker...and Josh Cribbs.
I mean, that is like saying "anyone that is 6'4" 225 pounds with a strong arm can be a good QB". NYET.

Liar, liar pants on fucking fire. They are "waiting for him to recover from surgery before signing him, but he passed his physical" Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. They are just lucky the HIPPA applies here and no one is allowed to know the actual truth except for what Cribbs and his agent want to tell. And HIPPA doesn't require them to tell the truth...it just allows them to hide the truth.

There's also a longsnapper position in the Pro Bowl. And 10 other positions on kickoff/punt.
When a gunner touches the ball on any play, much less every single offensive one, then your QB/gunner comparison will hold water. Until then, stick to the trivia threads.

This just goes to show that ex jocks know far less about the game than guys that study it.
A team needs a good player at every position if it is to be considered a quality team, and that includes long snappers and special teams gunners. Obviously those positions are not as critical as a QB, but the fact is teams can LOSE games and coaches can lose jobs because of poor kick coverage.
As bad as they have been with their winning and losing records the Browns were still considered to have one of the better Special teams with Josh Cribbs in there...including his kick coverage.
But, apparently, in your opinion, any meatball with shoulder pads and a helmet can do that job.
Again, as before in that other disagreement, your argument is not with me, but with the coaches/GMs/owners of the NFL who believe differently than you, the expert who played what? a year of NAIA ball.

Knowing who invented the football helmet isn't "studying the game", especially if you were around when it happened. That's just being old and remembering shit that happened.
My argument isn't with you, it's with the stupid shit that you say and then claim to be fact. Name one other team that uses a roster spot on a full time gunner. I'll wait.
As I've been saying now for the past two weeks, these are where utility players are utilized. Cribbs wasn't beloved for being a great gunner, he was beloved because he was a great utility player. Be it returning kicks, kickoff coverage, playing WR or playing QB...Cribbs did it all and he did it well. That's why he was loved and that's why he got paid.
Steve Tasker is one of, if not the only, gunner that was employed almost exclusively at that position. Vince Papale can also be considered in the conversation, although his career was very brief. Ed Reed, David Tyree, George Wilson, Kassim Osgood...all considered great gunners today and all are or were recently starters at other positions.
We don't need to go out and find another gunner to replace him, that would be a waste of a roster spot. What we need is another utility player, somebody who does three or four jobs and does them well but isn't good enough to be a full time offensive/defensive starter. Honey Badger and Denard Robinson come to mind in the draft, but I don't foresee us drafting either and there's nobody like that in FA so, for next season, I can almost guarantee that that the gunner position will be filled with a special teams player already on our roster and the returning duties will be on Benjamin. There isn't a coach/GM/owner in the NFL who would disagree with that.
So, as I said before..."anybody".
Just to spark debate, if special teams are so important to the overall success of the team, why is it that we've had continual top tier special teams and have had 1 winning record in 10 years? A special teams unit will lose you a game much more often than it will win you one. While all three aspects of the game are no doubt important, having a viable offense takes precedent over having a viable special team unit any day of the week.
And it was three years of Division 1 NCAA ball.

Who ever claimed that these guys were "full time" gunners. Not I. But every team still needs a good gunner, not just a bunch of roving monkeys. Yes, nearly every special teams player has another position to man, be it LB/DB etc., but a lot of them get and keep jobs on NFL teams based on their capabilities on special teams. Nearly 1/4th to 1/3rd of all NFL plays are special teams plays.

Yes, certainly, we need someone versatile like that...but in considering that person his "gunning" capabilities must be kept in mind.
Honey Badger and Denard Robinson come to mind in the draft, but I don't foresee us drafting either and there's nobody like that in FA so, for next season, I can almost guarantee that that the gunner position will be filled with a special teams player already on our roster and the returning duties will be on Benjamin. So, as I said before..."anybody".
No, not just "anybody". Do you think Colt McCoy will be our gunner? Or Phil Taylor? Or Travis Benjamin. No, it will be someone suited to the job...probably a backup LB or DB.
That is what made Cribbs so unique. He could fill both the PR/KR and gunner role. Benjamin may fill the return role, but not the gunner role. It would obviously be a surprise to us all if he were sent out there in that role and we might all be questioning the sanity of the coaching staff.
I guess the proof will be in the pudding. Next year, without Cribbs, someone will have to step up to be the gunner...but will that person be as good as Cribbs? He will have large shoes to fill merely in that capacity without even talking about who returns kicks.
Just to spark debate, if special teams are so important to the overall success of the team, why is it that we've had continual top tier special teams and have had 1 winning record in 10 years?
No spark there. We have had bad offense, bad defense, bad coaching. No special teams play can make up for that.
A special teams unit will lose you a game much more often than it will win you one.
Yes, it will. Precisely my point. The Browns special teams rarely lost us games. Rarely if at all.
While all three aspects of the game are no doubt important, having a viable offense takes precedent over having a viable special team unit any day of the week.
Sure, no argument. But even a team with a viable offense can fall prey to bad special teams.
I mean, a gall bladder or an appendix is by no means as vital as your brain or your heart....but if you have a bad gall bladder or appendix, you are in for a world of hurt. Trust me, I know.
And it was three years of Division 1 NCAA ball.
