Rob Portman Supports Gay Marriage.

Political Discussion

  • But back to the gay marriage thread, this is an interesting map that shows the nature of the problem for any politician - outside the South - who doesn't support gay marriage. It's about DADT, but you get the picture. The public has moved faster than the politicians. It's also about how politicians are motivated more by how their active base and their interest groups would respond than the public at large.

  • Well lucky for me I'm not doing something that I can be fired for because I'm not quite politically correct enough.

( Another reason I can't get weak at the knees over the Bill of Rights)

But if it makes you feel any better I can most certainly understand black animosity towards white people.

I do, however, think that it's time to let it go but there's so much money to be made from so called liters of that movement by demagoguing the situation.

Plus most of the really incendiary things that I've said we're rewritten , paraphrased or just completely made up by you.

But that's your cartoon world and most people can see that.

So have we officially discarded the Portman topic?

  • Plus, just for the record, I don't think you can compare an actual vote with polling data.

    WSS

  • Sure. Just know when you keep hearing this discussion of why Republicans can't attract minority voters, and how they're so cut off they don't even know what they're saying is really offensive, they're talking about you.

Your real problem is that you think it's truth-telling. But it's not. It's just garden variety prejudice, racism, and/or tribalism.

Sure you can. You just poll likely voters.

  • Take this into consideration:

The next time you start running down your list of Republican leaders and include Drudge Rush Limbaugh shot Hannity etcetera etcetera ( Because they are visible and outspoken) Keep in mind their counterparts who claim to speak for the black population.

I'm not sure how far you want Republicans to go, they clearly need to outbid the Democrats right?

And to get back to a previous claim, I don't really think most black people, who are pretty much just normal human beings, think that drugs are a plot to eliminate their race.

I don't think most of them like the gang violence and illiteracy etcetera any more than the average population, probably even less.

And blaming me doesn't help anything it just whips up your base.

    WSS

  • Pointing out your racism doesn't whip up anyone's base. Because no one is watching this. It's not about my motives. It's just about you. Sorry.

And I don't see any black leader with the pull of a Limbaugh or a Hannity or a Drudge. I don't get the comparison. Those are all huge media figures in Republican politics. The black people you complain about - Farrakhan, Sharpton, Jackson - are bit players with small audiences and little or no pull in Democratic politics today. The comparison simply doesn't work.

Think of it this way: you're proud that, on an individual level, you don't have a problem with black people, as long as you consider them sufficiently enough like you. But on the group level, you have nothing but contempt for them.

I don't think the fact that you might, say, like a black guy who played with you in a band eliminates the racist problem you have. But whatever. You're you. You're not changing. We can move on.

  • Yes we can because frankly I'm not embarrassed and I don't think you are correct even if you think you are which I'm not positive of.

I tend to think this is shtick for you.

You should be bright enough to understand how ridiculous it is when a respected man like Colin Powell can seriously say that it's racially offensive to call President Obama lazy.

That's just an incredibly stupid statements to make.

    WSS

  • I really don't think you're a very good measure of what is and isn't bright.

I certainly know what Colin Powell is saying. But there are some instances when you're only calling a black person lazy because they're being lazy and they happen to be black. There are also instances where saying black people are lazy would be an appeal to prejudice, or prejudiced on its own. It would depend on the statement.

Like, when you called inner city black voters "illiterate welfare criminals" for instance. That would be an textbook example of prejudice. Also racism.

I must not be considering I gave you credit for that amount of wit.

    Oh please.

Saying this guy is lazy is because he doesn't really like the work of the president, people for both sides say that.

Add nobody, I repeat nobody was saying that black people are lazy they were saying Obama is lazy.

Add to play the race card there is stupid and beneath Powell, but I guess not beneath you.

Anything short of complete patronization is racism to you.

    WSS

  • Oh, I love "the race card." Which is what you guys say any time someone discusses race. Oh, no! It's the race card! How dare they! Please.

I'm not even commenting on what Powell said. I don't even remember which "Obama is lazy" comment he was referring to. (Ailes? Sununu? Someone else?) But you can make that comment in a way that's not racist, and particular to one person, and you can make it in a way that's prejudiced, or as an appeal to other people's prejudices.

If it was Sununu, I happen to think that, yes, that was an intentional appeal to prejudice. Republican flacks have been blowing that dog whistle for years. Sununu blew it a few times this past campaign. It's nothing new.

  • Here's the bottom line.

Take any of these situations that're outrageous to you.

    Switch the races.

If it sounds ridiculous, it is ridiculous.

Example: Roger Ailes called Gingrich a prick.

I demand Ailes apologize for making such a racist statement

Of course it does, and of course it doesn't.

Calling Obama lazy is no different than calling you lazy or me lazy.

People used to think the Irish or a bunch of lazy stupid drunks. (Hmmmmmm)

Calling Gingrich a prick is no more racially motivated than calling Obama lazy arrogant, or even a prick.

Some might try to say it's worse because there's some sort of perception that blacks are lazy.

And that's no more valid than saying there's a perception that white people are pricks.

Yes indeed Woodrow there are lazy people of all colors and nationalities and parties. Deal with it.
