Losses Vs. Gains Comparison

The Browns Board

I am completely fine with the trade with the Steelers. I did happen to want Shamarko, however I really believe the AFC North is going to beat each other up to the tune of Bengals (10-6), Ravens (8-8), Browns (7-9), and Steelers (7-9). That Steelers pick is going to be a fine Mid 3rd Rounder, just like the Colts will probably regress a little bit to grant another mid 4th Rounder.

Having 5 pick in the (probable) Top 120 is going to open up a lot of possibilities.

Let's just go from when Ben was drafted (04)

    2004 - 15-1

    2005 - 11-5

    2006 - 8-8

    2007 - 10-6

    2008 - 12-4

    2009 - 9-7

    2010 - 12-4

    2011 - 12-4

    2012 - 8-8

Now what exactly has happened to the roster since last year to put them at 7-9? The Bengals have certainly improved with two VERY good drafts in a row, even though I'm not a big fan of Eifert. The Steelers lost Mike Wallace (I'd argue he is the reason for the locker room dissension last season) Keenan Lewis and James Harrison. I hated to see Harrison go because I think he's still going to produce but beyond him i think the loss of Wallace is an addition via subtraction. He's an elite one trick pony. They didn't even offer Lewis a contract because Cortez Allen is better. Jason Worilds has been waiting for starter reps since being drafted playing behind Harrison and when he has been given the opportunity to play he's racked up a respectable sack total. They brought back a very good nickel corner in Willie Gay and signed Matt Spaeth who graded out by pro football focus (a respected online football source) as the best blocking tight end last year. Go to a Bears board and you can see for yourself..most of the fan base talking about how Matt Forte is really going to miss the guy. He;'s also familiar with the Steeler system seeing as he was drafted by them. The only area where the Steelers have gotten worse is tight end.

People here have been calling for this epic collaspe for as long as I've been posting here. I started posting under another name so I've been here longer than my current name even suggests. They've been to two Super Bowls and have won one. Roethlisberger is still on the roster, they drafted a very good college tailback and his game is tailor made for the NFL but in particular the zone blocking scheme the Steelers intend to employ. Ben has a absolutely tremendous play action pass and wasn't able to use it last year because there ground game was putrid. Just getting consistent play out of the backfield will pay substantial dividends. Bell could very well be a offensive rookie of the year candidate because he has great hands and the lateral quickness and vision to be very good. He also led the NCAA in yards after contact and his offensive line was downright bad. It's the reason he was drafted ahead of Ball and really should have been drafted ahead Benard but the Bengals didn't need a physical back they needed a change of pace guy. Soooooooo my message board rivals until all the stalwarts start dropping off the map the epic collapse you all so enjoy to predict isn't turning a corner and heading for home. LasVegas doesn't have them finishing at 7-9 and it's because they know better. They also play the odds and the odds suggest the Steelers are going to be just fine, especially if the rookies pan out.

EDIT: Since I've been born (82) the Steelers have had 7 losing seasons and only from 1985-1988 were they ever in a tight grouping. I'll be 31 in September and that's coming up so in almost 31 years they've had 7 losing seasons and right now they have one of the best quarterbacks in the game and plenty of stalwart starters with a host of up and comers. Once again what is going to bring on the collapse? Ben getting really hurt? that's about the only way and even then just about every team in the NFL would struggle with their franchise QB going down.

Well, first of all, you were one bounce of the football from being 7-9 last year.

I still don't see anything impressive at running back, and you let your best long-ball threat go, and your tight end is getting long in the tooth so ... your weapons aren't better.

Even Steeler fans will admit that some of the recent draft picks along the offensive line are looking less than sterling.

Defensively, you still have the best DC in the business, but you are relying on a lot of 30+ starters ... including three in the secondary. I'm not saying they can't play anymore ... I'm saying old guys get injured.

I like your linebackers, Ben's a dickhead but he's a playmaker, so you'll win some games. 8-8 ish would be a good goal. Probably 7-9. Just getting too old. Plus both Ohio teams looks much improved.

Ben was also having a career year before hurting his shoulder. As with most teams in the lg when your star qb goes down you are goin to struggle. Bell has all the.tools and will certainly hav the opportuinty to push for rookie of the year so i disagree about your hb assessment and for every position on the team there is a young guy waiting to start an not just rookies but 2nd and 3rd year guys. The age argument doesnt work, most of it is now gone. Keisel, Clark, Polamalu and Taylor, you can throw foote in there to if you want. Keisel has heyward pushing, clark and polamalu have thomas and golden. Corner i really like the recently drafted hawthorne and of course willie gay is back but you still cant list a rookie as anything until they prove it on the gridiron. Ben is older but buta that position guys play for a while and hes probably the toughest in th business.

If rookies are "pushing" these vets for starting jobs, the vets must not be as good as you make them out to be.

I mentioned one rookie and it was just depth with hawthorne. My point was when the old guys are done there are strong replacements behind them. Heyward isnt a rookie, bell is immediately our best hb so your assessment would be correct there. The old argument just doesnt hold water.

You have no idea how "strong" or "promising" any of these replacements are. Just saying it doesn't mean shit until they become the starters.

Therefore, the argument does hold up. Your starters are old and your backups aren't as good as your starters.

    It's not rocket science.

What do you mean I have no idea? Heyward has already been spot starting, same with Jason Worilds. They have both proven very capable. You are correct I have no idea how Bell or Shark Thomas for example will perform because they are rookies but Heyward and Worilds have played plenty. Worilds played in place of both Harrison and Woodley when both were injured at different times. Heyward has already been rotating with Hood and Keisel or flat out starting when Keisel was injured. Worilds has started 10 games since being drafted and has 10 sacks. Heyward was obviously drafted in the first round and has been getting better each year since being selected in the first round. Soooooo my argument holds up just fine. I swear some of you guys don't follow rivals much at all.

We follow our rivals just fine. We just don't overrate them like you do.

Heyward and Worilds have played some....and at a very average level.

And you are right, you have no idea how Bell and Thomas will play (nor how Jones or any other rookie will play). They could be good, they could be mediocre, they could be bad.

Gipper you have proven time and time again you know nothing about the other teams in the divison. If you didnt have google you wouldnt even be able to act like you do. Worilds and heyward have also played better than average and 34 dlinemen are there.to occupy blocks not rack up crazy sack totals. Please just stop acting like you know what you are talking about, the charade has outstayed its welcome.

  • ben roethlisberger looks like a huge troll from 'the hobbit' series of movies getting attacked from all sides and trying to throw off defenders from his body as if they were little car clowns from the circus.

it's amazing how long he holds onto the ball peels half of these guys off his body and can still complete a pass.

but the time on thaqt is running out as DCs know how to attack him sending the guys into knock him around, knock the ball out of his hand or just plain hurt him.

without him you have no shot whatsoever.

Tom Brady was a bit of a anomaly because he was drafted so late. However the Pats offense is dink and dunk which is a system easily picked up by a young quarterback. Ben was drafted in the first round as the heir apparent. Aaron Rodgers the same and the list goes on. My point sir was that in most cases if a franchise qb goes down in season that team is going to struggle. Brady goes down they have to throw in Mallet. Manning goes down it's Brock Oseweiller. Rodgers goes down, i have no idea who they even have behind rodgers after Flynn went to Seattle. Run the list of teams in the NFL with franchise qbs and try and equate how that team would fare. Ben also wasn't third string. He was playing right behind Tommy Maddox. Sooooooo you're absolutely correct the Steelers would struggle without Ben, so would the Packers without Rodgers, the Pats without Brady, the Broncos without Manning, the Colts without luck. Run the list yourself. Don't mince words you knew exactly what I meant when I said it and unless you're trying to be intentionally difficult you too agree.

    Kap was drafted in the second round to be the heir apparent with a Coach known for deleoping quarterbacks. Maddox didn't get pulled because he sucked, he got pulled because he was hurt. Flynn had ONE enormous game and that was enough apparently to be enticed by the Seahawks. He hasn't done sh.it since. Cassell was the back up for several years and at least knew the system and that offense is all dink and dunk. As I said Manning goes down the Broncos are going to struggle. Brady goes down the same, Brees gets hurt, who are the Saints? Matt Ryan? run the list. I could go through any number of arguments, as could anyone else and pick it apart. Franchise qb's are franchise qb's for a reason. You build the team around them and when they get injured you're scrambling for an answer. Yes sometimes you escape without a huge issue, see the Steelers without Ben during his suspension going 3-1 but the Steelers never would have pushed for a Super Bowl without Ben and once again go back and run the list.;

  • the same heir apparent that didn't beat out alex smith for the starting job 2 years in a row? And didn't get his shot until smiths play was suffering and got injured. And since the pistol read option was really becoming successful in the league, Kap was the obvious choice at that point.

Also I went through the list and gave you examples that you quickly dismiss...

Soooo you are saying franchise qbs are no big deal. If one goes down, throw another guy in and the team will function in identical fashion. A statement im sure you know is insane.

    2012 - 8-8

Now what exactly has happened to the roster since last year to put them at 7-9?

I agree with everything you said here except the backfield comment. Bell has mad skills and I think he suits the AFC north, maybe a bit of a homer towards him since we went to the same H.S. but I think he's a definite upgrade. The Steelers are just getting older and the ohio teams in the division are finally starting to catch up. Very well said.

ben roethlisberger looks like a huge troll from 'the hobbit' series of movies getting attacked from all sides and trying to throw off defenders from his body as if they were little car clowns from the circus.

it's amazing how long he holds onto the ball peels half of these guys off his body and can still complete a pass.

but the time on thaqt is running out as DCs know how to attack him sending the guys into knock him around, knock the ball out of his hand or just plain hurt him.

without him you have no shot whatsoever.

I'm a Browns fan, but Ben looks worst than Weeden, who looks like a country bumpkin actor from The Real McCoys?! Ben is also a lot smarter than Weeden.

well it depends on whether or not you think ohio U gives out a better edumacation than ok state. let's compare:

one college verges on the border of kentucky and west virginia and the other.....well is in oklahoma.

let's hope we're not setting our hopes up for a doctor/scientist to come up with a cure for cancer from any one of those 2 busted ass schools.

they should be called ohio riverrats or whiskey runner and the oklahoma state tumbleweeds or sister fuckers.

i betcha they both got a diploma with a major in ass tinkering.

As a long time professional working for some great companies, my experience is that people from Ohio universities and colleges were preferred over people from much better known colleges elsewhere in America and did very well in a lot of key assignments. I've been around and despite what some may think, Ohio high schools are good and so are nearly all the colleges.

In my opinion Miami of Ohio, where Ben went to school, is a far superior university to Oklahoma State.
