Nfl Rumors: Firstenergy Stadium Potentially Receiving $200 Million In Upgrades

why the hell don't they host concerts and such there now? most stadiums have removable sod and or ways to cover the field. how do you think yankee stadium hosts NHL games outside?
no ingenuity or marketing STILL. always hated that about the browns owners. -
I'd like a roof. Make the thing useful other then for 8 games and two preseason.
I agree...It was moronic to not put a roof on the stadium.

Yes, I know how you feel, and I happen to disagree. Sure, I don't like cold weather nearly as much as I did 20 years ago- but you're going to have the nice heated area in back of the Club level if it gets too cold for you.
I haven't heard people in SW Ohio bitching they shouda put a dome over Paul Brown. Put a dome over Gillette in Foxboro? Hell, they were too cheap to even put real seats in the majority of the stadium. Funny the #1 TV market in the country- NYC didn't see fit to dome their shiny new stadium. So you can use it for major conventions? You need the hotel infrastructure to do that- and Cleveland ain't got it. Hosting a few extra revivals, tractor pulls, and drum & cheerleader competitions- won't ever recoup your investment bucks. .Short of freezing rain @ 34 degrees- if you know how to dress properly, cold isn't an issue. I do believe I know what I'm talking about as I've overnight camped (no cars, propane heaters, or bonfires either) in subzero temperatures.
Retrofitting a dome over First Energy is a pipe dream IMHO. Real world $$$ to put a dome over the place would approach what it cost to put up the stadium in the first place. And in the first place, the idea of doming the stadium came up, but the money to do so wasn't there- even if "they" had wanted to.
Though the architects have done a good job of improving the ambiance of the newer domed venues- Lucas Oil or Ford Field- (St Louis' Edward Jones sucks, IMHO)- it still leaves a lot to be desired. If you happen to enjoy it- then save yourself a lot of money, stay home and watch it on the widescreen in your living room. It's about the same feeling. If you want my real world suggestion how to improve the fan experience at the game- and one of my bucket list items is to see the Browns play in every NFL venue- it's widen out the concourse in the 100 level by about 100' , same as it is in the Club level. It was a serious mistake to keep the sardine ambiance the same as it was at the old place- one trip to any of the other newer stadiums is enough to convince you.
Aside to PG- maybe if they legalize weed, they can bring back the infamous "O" Zone of yesteryear, for those that want to imbibe during the game.
-
I live here in the city, theres quite a few national events that can be considered if a roof is added to the stadium, not to mention the biggest reason I want something overhead, weather can kill our supposed pass happy offense we're trying to implement.
Ice cold slippery rock or a solid 65-70 inside no snow, no rain, no WIND, etc etc etc

Just had a huge new convention center open a couple of days ago.

I thought Indy's stadium was a permanent roof, not retractable. Am I wrong?
-
Hoorta you said it would be about as much to roof it as build it? @ $283M to build, $200M sounds to be a pretty good value.

I hope it would be a retractable, not a dome. I would disagree with building a dome without the flexibility of the retractability option.
I agree w those that think not installing a retractable roof to begin with was moronic. like a restaurant only open for lunch. its built. its there. it costs money simply idling. ?????
there were ways to have afforded it from the start. two would have been a new design and simply selling the naming rights to begin w. that would have put a NICE roof overhead.
realize most importantly of ALL, Cle will NEVER EVER host a Super Bowl without one. i think the hotel infrastructure would find a way to make it work if the city got that gig. imho just being in the running to be a potential host would justify a retra-roof.
if it were retractable there's absolutely no reason they couldn't open it up at will, whenever-n-the-fuck they want. they could let a lil rain in the day before the game against someone not as used to wet play like a domed team or someone like say, Arizona...and if it gets torrential close-r up and avoid a swampy situation. not that they would...but they could. personally I think they SHOULD. control the weather. do all you can. Belickeck the shit out of the rulebook all you can.
how about a partial close to allow weather onto the field yet shield fans from a cold rain? can I get a hell yeah?
how could anyone not be in favor of that?!?
at the same time ur increasing attendance slightly by accomdating those that don't wanna deal w harsh weather like Mom's, young kids, football pussies in general, the elderly, handicapped, etc by ensuring that at least a portion of the stadium would be shielded from inclement weather at an affordable price. the live experience would then and only then be available to all.
if they build it fans will cum.
and THEN you use that new infused revenue to get new flat screens, swap vendors, barcoz in the club, get some ventilated boxes for smokers, brew signature "Cleveland Brown Ale" at 3 bux a cup or whatever in the hell strikes ur fancy.
seriously. options. and an option of an indoor venue of that size would most definitely book events, attractions, parties, conventions...no brainer. even with another just built. there will always be times 2 events are on the same day.
with the ability to remain dry even weddings become an option.
the stadium would recoup money over time as well. for ex guaranteed cover for seats could be slightly more-say $5-$10 more per ticket. by now it probably would have paid for itself. or most definitely by within the next ten years.
of course there would always be the constantly complaining fickle fuck football fans on the fringe of the cover, either bitching cause they still got wet...or cuz they wanted to be and didn't.
-
It's been hinted at, but I think the logistics of putting a dome/roof on an already built structure could be tricky and difficult. Once you consider the cost of additional heating/cooling and maintenance, I doubt we would ever get one unless it comes with a totally new stadium. It does seem that most new NFL stadiums coming out have the roof (Cowboys, Colts, and the spec of the Falcons). I have to believe at the cost the roof would cost it'd make a whole lot more sense just to make a new stadium all together.
-
I cannot believe it but I agree with Sisky on almost everything. But the world is safe because I still disagree with The Gipper. First off people who smoke being herded out of the building via 20 ramps to smoke is ridiculous. In the seats I get it but create other designated areas or at least make the damn escalators go up and down and/or add a couple more. It is simply crazy to think that the sin tax helped pay for the stadium. Other than the escalators another addition I would make is better concessions. They really are terrible when you compare them to other stadiums. It is difficult to even find a Budweiser for crying out loud. Cleveland is known for Rock n' Roll and Beer drinking. Anybody who has been to Cleveland knows this. It is a blue collar town.
The scoreboards are terrible! They definately need upgraded as does the sound system in the stadium. Out of the four football and Baseball stadiums in Ohio First Energy Stadium is the worst. Not impressive at all for when it was built. And this is coming from someone who hates the Reds new stadium. I hope they spend that $200 million before this season. It should be easy since there really is no shortage of things that need upgraded. A shorter list would be what they don't need to upgrade.
Go Browns!

I thought Indy's stadium was a permanent roof, not retractable. Am I wrong?
The stadium features a retractable roof and window wall allowing them to play both indoor and outdoor games.
"The home team determines if roof is to be opened or closed 90 minutes before kickoff. The roof remains open unless precipitation or lightning is within the vicinity of the stadium, the temperature drops below 40 °F (4 °C), or wind gusts are greater than 40 miles per hour (64 km/h), in which case the roof operators will close the roof. Once the roof is closed, it may not be reopened."
The stadium cost 721 million to construct. Past notable events include a Super Bowl, a mens NCAA Basketball regional final, and a NCAA mens basketball Final Four.
Economic impact for the Indianapolis MSA from the Super Bowl was nearly 300 million dollars (net).

Fuck the smokers. Go without for a few hours. It can be done.

bunch of pussies.
number one cleveland will NEVER host a super bowl. NEVER. so get your head out of your ass for that one.
number two if you can't deal with the wind and rain and snow then stay at home or go to your local sports pub where you can actually SEE the game. meanwhile chicago and green bay make you all sound like bitches.
as for smoking, i never got the 'open air' concept of stadiums but if smoke blows in someone's face OMG i'm gonna get cancer.
well i guess you haven't scene snapshots of the OLD days where everyone was white wearing suits and ties and smoking mad cigarettes.
guess you 'old timers' are now wearing depends and crying about how good it used to be. HA!
-
I saw you in line ahead of me.
-
Remember, it's not just the roof that's going to get a Super Bowl, Political Convention, or even a Final Four. You need to have hotel rooms, restaurants, parking, and all of the other amenities to
please the masses. Maybe someday, but Cleveland doesn't have those things now. Pittsburgh
and Green Bay doesn't have those extras either, but they have a good football team year in and year out.

This was an awesome post and Im right with Mik on this one...Let Me also say that the homagenizing of the the stadium and NFL experience becoming a sterile event saddens Me..I realize things evolve...but I think that if you want a sterile, cush enviornment...then stay the fuck home like Mik said....As far as getting a SB here...cant see it happen with the way city council continues to fight over personal agenda's...Like everyone else..I'll be happy with just getting W's on Sunday's...

no one needs to lose with a good design and flexible concept. with those you can damn near accommodate everyone who has money to spend...without much compromise needed by anyone.
if the powers that be shared the wonderful attitude of "fuck those not like me, I'm die-hardcore! don't like it stay home you fucking pussies!"...we could justifiably expect to lose our team again at some point in the near future.
thankfully they get the concept of "asses in seats pay bills".
i encourage them to maximize profits by catering to every conceivable fan out there and use the venue every which way they can when it's not in "football mode".
by doing so i believe it can be a win/win for everyone, all the way top to bottom.
the alternative of resisting change, prohibition instead of accommodation, and "keeping it old school" simply to pacify a handful of crotchety curmudgeons holding onto yesteryear just ain't gonna get er dun in today's climate. before anyone says it, Cle ain't Wisconsin, and First Energy ain't Lambeau. different markets call for creative and varied solutions.
Cle can choose to either stay current and continue to inject life into their storied and once great franchise...or face complacency and remain a distant memory of past glory.
to me "current" equates to "relevant".
or, i guess if anyone's an extreme pig-skin purist unwilling to adjust they always have the option to defect and pack it up, head for Wisconsin and don themselves a cheesehead.

I Agree.

Living here and paying the sin tax so they could build this stadium and driving by it everyday seeing it empty makes me pissed. Easy for people who live out of town to say, be tough, I like the snow, fuck yea! But you don't live here, probably rarely attend a game (not you Hoorta and the others). I like the weather games also. Been to many a snow game freezing my ass off. But It still don't justify a dinosaur sitting on the shore of Lake Erie empty for most of the year. You either get with the program and modernize the thing, or deal with the consequences.

Don't put a roof on the stadium. Make it like old times. Only let white people play. Get rid of the forward pass.
-
that would piss me off too DHBF. daily. and if TCPO's concern about Bark's value at 6th overall is any indication I can only imagine how he feels about that use of resources as well-->283M for 2+8 3hr long games a year!! yikes!!
maybe The HazBan will put it to better use in the down time than it has ban (bad pun i know).
some good funnies in this thread too btw. i got a good chuckle multiple times.
so its worth saying that i love it when the Browns play in shitty weather. like REALLY LOVE IT. especially in super shittied-up muddy whites.
i also know how to dress properly in harsh weather. or to bring a Ghooly "cover-blanket" along if viewing the game with a "handy lady".
the problem is thus:
i have been able to attend about 2 games on avg a year...and wish it could be more. if i could interest my folks-both in their late 60s-to make the 3 hr drive and join me it would add at least one but probably at least two more. better cover at the game would absolutely help persuade my Mom to go... and of course my Pops will rarely go without her. if she'd agree to come to two games a year we'd then fill about 8 seats between us per season...vs the current 2 or so i fill now. im sure my Moms not the only football attendance lynchpin in the world...my point is sometimes gaining one fan can multiply into many.
there are many ways to improve the stadium experience for people. we don't talk much about the sheer ability to share it with another.
not only would it be better for Browns revenue having my Mom and subsequently my Dad there, but it would enhance my game experience personally simply watching the game together with both of them.
i hope they can find a way and do it.

Oh, I don't care if they make a place for the smokers better than what they have. To make us both happy how about if we agree to this:
All the smokers can blow their smoke up your nose and not mine....wherever they go.
