Training Camp News, August 1 (It's August!)

Don't get me started on Tanny/Martin combo. Still ticks me off. That was my prescribed draft, over and over... like Aaron Rodgers and Vincent Jackson. I think Tannehill seems like he was built in a lab to play QB in 2013: Extremely smart, great athlete, big arm, terrific work ethic. And 23. I'm trying so hard to let it go, but drafting a tailback at #3???
Cliff, thanks for the great "trending" on Weeden. Makes me feel a lot better. I LOVE going to games and seeing the ball going downfield. It's a blast. I loved getting a quarterback with an arm (I was in favor of Tannehill but also liked the Weeden idea). I think he's getting A+ coaching and now he's in the ideal offense. It's his golden opportunity.
As far as age, I really don't care. In Weeden's 7th season starting with this one (8th overall), he'll turn 36 in October. Which Brady just turned today... and nobody's talking about Brady retiring anytime soon. Barring a big injury, you expect a really good quarterback to keep starting until he's edging close to 40 (Favre, Brady, Manning, etc.).
So if Weeden's last year has a starter is the one he turns 38, we have 9 years of him including this one. But it'll be someone else unless we win about 7 games or more and he posts a PR no lower than the high 80s.

Funny you should bring this up.
Not that I'm sold on Weeden (not sure he has the mental skills), but in a similar vein:
In a cover story for the September issue of Men’s Health magazine, Brady said he would entertain the notion of playing football into his 50s. “I would love it,’’ he told Men’s Health. “If I think I can do it, then I probably will.’’
Crazy stuff, but something to think about.

Here's the blurb on cutting Phil Taylor :

Whoever said that should be cut from their reporting job.

I think the only concern I have on defense is the height of the cb's. Then, I remember Minnifield, who did a nice job.
Well, when he wasn't getting penalties....those few? games never left me....
This team is going to shock the heck out of their opponents. I can see it.
I think Weeden will roll. But if he chokes and doesn't get it - he had every chance in the book of football life
with all the talent around him, real, clever coaches, and a system that helps them succeed.
Family Day at Browns practice will be great.
Are you going too? We usually go up with the family every year and it's like a vacation to us. We are actually getting ready to head up there in a few hours. We're going to ride up tonight. What would be better to do with the kids, The Great Lakes Science Center or The Cleveland Zoo?.. Or is there a better option that you know of. We went to the Cleveland Aquarium last year before Family Night.

Sorry Poetic - I didn't see this. We were busy, and when we got back home, I couldn't get on the net.
Had to run a scan, got some crap off again, and presto! worked. Then I posted the next day and it was too late to notice this.
let me know what you thought.
The biggest thing last night, was this:
1. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/browns-practice-stadium-222821848--nfl.html
God Bless them - that was cool. That's serious joy right there.
What else I took away from the practice last night is a few things....
2. Lewis will surely be a star for the Browns. He's that change of pace, really quick,
explosive back that will get lost for a split second through los, and then he takes off.
Seems to have serious instincts taking off after that, and is tough. If it came down to Montario or
Lewis... it's Lewis to me. Poor Montorio - keeps getting hurt. Too bad. Lewis is a different back, though.
3. Bess at wr? He's a terrific addition right up there with Lewis at rb. Playmakers.
4. This is a good/bad observation. It isn't based on much, but:
Little is INTENSE. Even in just a mostly going through sets and snaps, etc... Little is all out to be the best he can
be this year. I didn't see that last year at practice. He lines up, and he means business. Serious fire.
That was the good. Gordon shows the same old incredible talent... but seems ...what is it? Just being very careful with his knee or ....
I don't know. It was probably his knee and he was just frustrated with being careful. But his body language a few times...seemed
to be...I don't know. Like.....lackluster? He did drop a pass, but I couldn't tell if it was just a bad throw or not.... we were having too much fun interacting with Canton Mike's funny, cute grandkids...
5. 4$ for a pack of peanut M&Ms ? Really? How much if you had regular M&Ms...ten bucks? What was it...6$ for a large coke? $6.50 for a nice tray of nachos and cheese? No, that was the deluxe nachoes - the deluxe has halepeana sp? peppers with it, and salsa, I think it was. I have GOT to find a way to bring my own root beer to a game. The nachos cheese is spicy.
6. In the past, Joe Haden looked like a man among boys. Now, he looks like an All-pro among other men who can really play.
Things are looking up in the secondary.
7. There were over 24,000 fans at the family night practice last night. That's a recent record..(fixed)... And, it's the first time I have seen a very happy, enthusiastic several-round "wave" by the fans.
8. Weeden has so much a cannon arm compared to Campbell or Hoyer. Hoyer's arm reminds me of Colt's arm.
9. Robertson, lb, ...seems to be a star that will shine brightly this coming season. This whole team means business,
and seems like they will start kicking ass when the regular season starts. They are finally set free to excel by
an excellent coaching staff, with a very smart, custom adjusted system in place for both sides of the ball.
10. See #1 again. Very, very classy run for a TD for all the kids out there.
.

Picking up Bess was a coup. GOOD character dude with skills to match. Really hoping he lets it loose this season.
-
We had a ball. I agree with all Cal said about players.
Side notes:
1) My one 7 yr old twin Granddaughter Lexi is fast. When she went through that inflatable, the guy working it laughed & commented on how fast she blew through it. At the game, she said,"Grampy, that #51 (Mingo) is FAST...He's even faster than ME!" High praise from a 7 year old girl.
2) The 3 Granddaughters all had their pics taken with Joe Thomas' Aunt ...She (sporting her orange Mohawk) & her husband are real fun people.
3) I believe my Grandkids have adopted Cal & his Bride, Pat.
4) Kids also loved the laser & fireworks show too.
BTW, most impressive?......#1 running that ball!!
Mike

In some version of defending Gordon: I've heard over and over that he's a hard worker and takes very good care of himself physically, does the offseason stuff, etc. I also read a couple tweets about how he "glides" when he runs, so effortlessly like a Randy Moss type.
I've heard some talk that he seems "off" a little and it might be due to the new regimes' tougher stance on attitude and indiscretions, maybe a couple stern talking-tos, but I also get the sense it's getting overblown. I know his knee is bugging him a little and that probably isn't helping. I have a feeling he'll be just fine.
My take? People are expecting so much out of him as opposed to last year. They're saying he could be not only "really good" but a legit #1, a full-on superstar. He's young, he's not ahead of the curve maturity wise (most coddled jocks aren't), and he'll figure it out at his own pace. I really don't feel any alarm.
My biggest concern is connected, though: The passing game overall. I like our OL and our backs. I think our defense might be playoff caliber and perhaps overwhelming. I'm just not sold on our passing game right now (but neither is anybody else).

^100+.
gordon is my fave player on the team behind haden. the kid just needs to grow up and maybe learn more about the NFL besides what goes on on the field.
i tell ya, when you watch the HOF inductees get up on stage nowadays you realize how these guys were molded throughtout the years with/from their coaches and team mates. i just watched an MSG channel show on earl 'the pearl' monroe and it just brought everything out in a public forum about what we've talked about off-topic on racial issues that you make you the way you want you to be made. yes, we all make mistakes and in the end are just human. but some more than others need that 'wake-up call'. sometimes that comes from inner vision. sometimes that comes through tragedy.
gordon needs to grow from that 'insider fantasy football steal' to a legit number one. and he needs to do it now. this year is a coming of ages for this team and if everything plays out accordingly (people making the correct blocks, running the correct routes, throwing the correct ball etc. etc) we could be playing for the division title at the end of the season. -
haven't seen it but i'll look for it online.
and he is correct about how he was brought up learned from people he had trusted about other races.
i learned my lesson one hot saturday afternoon in sandusky ohio what that racial term for blacks meant to them. it was not a good lesson for me by all faults.
then getting kicked out of the house at 18 and joining the army brought a lot of things into perspective and learned that we are all basically the same, with the same issues except our skins are different colors.
i had a wop from queens, a black guy from NC, a pothead from maine and myself as roomates at fort knox. i learned more in my life in that one six month period than i have in all my life.
we played tackle football across from the barracks on a grass field and i remember running a kickoff return and going the whole distance (but seeing this mean ugly MFing black guy that hated me cuz i beat him in cards and in boxing and was cool with all his brothers coming in from the side out the corner of my eyes for a death blow hit) and my black roomate gave up his body and blew the dude up in a crazy feet over the head block to save my azz.
god knows what we would have done for each other had there been a war. but i'll love him to the day i die.
and yes, he'll call me the N word everytime we still speak.

I digress.
Would Babe Ruth have been same prolific home run hitter if he had to face black pitchers during his career? How different would the history of NCAA football and basketball read if the college ranks had embraced the black man earlier than the mid 1960's? I suspect the record books would read much different than what appears now. I am not here to rankle anybody's cage but I think it is important to understand how segregation filtered down through the many layers of American society and how difficult it must of been for a black athlete to stick to his guns and endure the hostilities he/she faced in striving to play pro sports.
I was raised by racist parents south of the Mason Dixon line. Like you, mik, my time in the military, (doing figure eights on a fast frigate in the Med for months at a time), exposed me to latinos and blacks whom I discovered were not any different from me. A Puerto Rican from the Bronx turned me on to his home grown cassettes which contained some of the first hip/hop of the early 1980's. I would go on weekend trips to DC and hang with the home boys. My buddy, Hector, from Miami, would send care packages to my home when I was on leave ensuring a rocking good time. I have not heard from them in years, but I betcha if we were to get together somehow, it would be just like old times. I'm a better person for developing a tolerance my parents were totally incapable of understanding.

We just got back from going to Cedar Point and The Cleveland Browns Family Fun Night Vacation. It was awesomely awesome as expected! We rode so many rides at Cedar Point, it rained biblically twice and I'm still sore! It was amazing fun, can't wait to go again!
The Family Fun Night was great. It wasn't to hot, there was a nice breeze. The Wave was really fun. I hope that they start doing things like that during the games... That's the kind of thing that cheerleaders could help to initiate?
The little boy Encinas running the ball was touching. Man the place erupted in applause when he scored... loud enough to break a curse? Just in case I brought a lucky rabbits foot and had a couple of the players rub it for good luck. LOL
The fireworks show was the same time as the Hall of Fame Fireworks this year so we missed the HOF's which kinda sucked. But, the laser and fireworks show at the stadium(from the seats, no less) was a great show! The only issue was that the pictures on the field would be better seen from higher in the stadium so the effect was diminished from the bottom set. I spent 50 bucks on 6 Amazing Passes to see our favorite team, 3 Large Refreshing Sodas, 2 Bottles of Crisp and Cool Water, 2 Baskets of Fries, 6 Large Chicken Tenders, Autographs from a couple of Great Players, and 6 Tickets to a Cleveland Browns Themed Video/Laser/Fireworks Spectacle! We even saw Haslam's yacht.
We are going to really rock this year. I can feel it. Thursday will be a blow-out, even though it's preseason... the players are ready to take the next step.

Little looks intense? There must be two guys named Little, the one I saw can't catch the ball in traffic. Gordon either. What happens when they start getting hit?
Weeden has nice arm strength and seems to be accurate.
This training camp stuff is okay, but I am interested to see what happens when the hitting starts.
