I just want to see how things are progressing.

    - Where are the O & D are at this point

    - Are we tripping over ourselves or are we actually making progress somewhere.

    - Do our players work with Horton's D

    - Is Weeden really that much better than the other QB's, and does he look like he's finally starting to get it

    - Are our Receivers catching the ball

    - Between our O-Line and RB's, are we looking like we'll be able to run better this year

    - Are there any under the Radar players that we may want to keep an eye on

It's early and it's the first Pre-Season game, but we should get at least a vague idea of where we're at.

well if you can learn that from the 5 minutes our starters play then you sir are a wizard.

They're supposed to play a Quarter.

Some of the items are related to our depth, and others will be a reflection of our new Coaching Staff (which is another one I failed to list).

So yes, I think we'll get a vague idea of where we're at and what we need to work on . . . I'm not saying we can project the Season based on what we see tonight.

i place the blame on the stoopid fuckin mayor and the stoopid city council and the people who voted down his desire for help in building a new stadium.

without modell there would be no championships, no cardiac kids, no dawg pound and no kosar era.

yeah we sat down for 3 years. did anyone learn anything in those years when we knew we were coming back to bring a winner back with them.....................

    uh, no.

here's to banner and the future. no one ever said being a browns fan is like a walk in the park.

If you look at my my original post, i gave credit for everything before 1995, which included 30 years plus of Modell ownership.

I don't think anybody has too much of a problem with how he ran the team before HE MOVED IT.

If George Steinbrenner had moved the Yankees to Florida in the mid-90's, and Yankee stadium sat empty for three years until finally the Yankees came back and were basically the Kansas city Royals while the team in Florida won two World Series and pounded the new "Yankees" team every year ... Do you think Steinbrenner would be admired in NY for winning a couple of championships in the 70's, or do you think he would be vilified for being the guy that moved the team of Ruth, Dimaggio and Mantle to fucking Florida and leaving New York with a piece of shit team that couldn't get out of its own way?

So should Art Modell be admired for putting out some good football teams over 30 years or vilified for being the guy that moved the team of Paul Brown, Otto Graham and Jim Brown to fucking Baltimore and leaving Cleveland with a piece of shit team that can't get out of its own way?

Sure there would be "Steinbrenner apologists" who blamed the mayor of NYC for the city not building a stadium fast enough, blah, blah, blah ... but real Yankee fans would say "Fuck him!". Just like real Browns fans say "Fuck Modell!"

It's not Modell's fault that the Lerners were fucking incompetent and hired assbags to run the team, but it's his fault that we were in that situation. I don't give a shit about the mayor, or his family, or poor fucking Baltimore ... You Don't Move The Fucking Yankees out of New York, and You Don't Move the Fucking Browns out of Cleveland.

i know. i just don't get why they are still doing this. i watched some of the HOF game and most of the veterans that played on the lines played like they were playing against their own teammates in practice. no one was getting chopped, armed in the chin and knocked on their ass.

now when the 2nd and 3rd stringers (wannabees) get in there they try to kill everyone.

i hope there is something to gleen from this game tonight and all for the positives. if our QB(s) go out there and throw 12 picks combined i'll prob puke on myself.

  • Al Lerner was a good owner. God realized that, said no no no not in Cleveland, and took him from us. it was his son who was incompetent and didn't want to own the team. Dan Gilbert's time is coming, he's too good of an owner to have in Cleveland.

I disagree, Modell had one title in his 35 years as owner of the Browns. Without him, with his ineptitude, perhaps we would have had any number of other titles.

You cannot change history, but with a better owner, the Browns do much better.

Modell probably should have sold the team to Al Lerner in the late 80s...when it value was probably more than it would have been later.

Randy Lerner was a lousy owner. We are not sure how good Al could have been since, after all, he only had the team for about 2.5 working years before he died.

here's to banner (hopefully) changing that.

  • Weeden's going to play at least a quarter, maybe more if we're in mid-possession, just as I hoped. That's not normal for an established starter, which he isn't. Tannehill played one series, so you can see the difference in how they're perceived by their respective teams.

Preseason matters to Weeds. If he plays poorly and Campbell plays well, even in a "meaningless game," this will immediately become much more of a competition. Keep in mind that as of right now, today, Banner probably thinks there's about a 20% chance Weeden starts the opener next year. Maybe less.

Personnel wise, the Browns are well set up: If I'm Banner, I'm thinking we won't need a new starter on the OL, the front 7, running back, and hopefully WR (Little, Gordon, Bess, Benjamin). You think possibly TE, "non #1" CB, S as other spots you might like to upgrade, although you have a lot of young players who could emerge.

Certainly no big whoop there. You're basically compelled to sign about 4 significant free agents. You have like 10 draft picks including doubles in 3 and 4. My point: Weeden knows the Browns don't have a lot of needs... and they do have a lot of currency to go get a Bridgewater or Boyd.

Watch for Toni Gurley. Here he's the sleeper for that last spot. Really big and having a nice camp.

  • Another look at the descending importance of the RB position: After 10 1,000 yard seasons, Steven Jackson was replaced in St. Louis by... nobody. They're going with former backups Richardson and Pead.

But they did bring in left tackle Jake Long and WR Tavon Austin. See the trend?

Jackson is going to be one of the first RBs to really challenge the HOF. He's going to have massive numbers and just a phenomenal career that really added up to basically nothing as far as the bottom line. Someone's gonna write that article very soon.

  • I just hope, hope, hope we look like an NFL team. I of course expect all the usual pre-season mistakes that even the best teams make, but not the crap that I have seen for the last decade....................GO BROWNS!!!!

    *******************************************

However, Miami's head coach is in his second year. This means Tannehill is in his second year with the offense. Meaning,

of course Weeden needs more like a quarter of work. The Browns are obviously in their first year of the coaches and system.

It's not a good comparison to Tannehill's situation at all. And Miami's offense struggled the first game out. And offenses lag

    behind the defenses this early.

This is Weeden's huge chance to show he has "it". It's hard to predict - I look for Weeden to play fine. That's very hopeful thinking....

i really think you're overstating the fact that the running game is no longer important. i think to be a championship caliber team you need a good balance. ray rice just didn't block last year, neither did marshawn lynch.

do i think their shelf life (most) is very short? yes. do i think they should be picked in the top ten? no.

No, I am not going to educate you....unless you want to pay me for my time.

As far as Modell doing better than what we have had since? Sure. Any idjit can see that.

But, the fact still remains that during his 35 year tenure with the Browns, they played in exactly 2 championship game...going 1-1 back to back in 1964-1965. (In other words, none, zero, zip, nil, in his last 30 years here) Overall record during his tenure was pretty good: 278-233-6.

But, the point you forget is that: A. Modell VOLUNTARILY opted out of the Gateway Project, and. B. He ran and controlled the stadium...and ran it into the ground. C. The ideas that the City went along with to improve the stadium situation were ALL Modell's ideas, and D. the vote to improve the stadium occurred the day after he said he was trying to leave.

And, by the way...YES, I do believe you were drunk....because never, ever did I ever hear Mike White say that he would not have the city held hostage to an owner that owned a new stadium.

The next time I hear that stated will be the first time I will have heard that stated.

Find the video, or the newspaper quote where that occurred....because I never heard it ever...and I lived here in the Cleveland area where this situation was on the news all the time.

(no doubt White had some choice words about Modell....after his announcement...but Never before. They were having day to day negotiations all along...until Modell sneaked off to Baltimore in Lerner's plane)

Good God, let it go, already.

It's not Steven Jackson's fault the Rams sucked anymore than it Joe Thomas' fault the Browns suck.

Yes, the Rams should have taken a page from the Cleveland Browns model: Draft a Left Tackle (Thomas) and a Wide Receiver (Edwards) in the top 3 ... what could possibly go wrong?

Neither team has had good coaching, or more importantly, a good quarterback.

That is neither Joe Thomas' fault or Steven Jackson's fault.

The Rams never said "oh we don't need a QB now because we have a really good running back" ... it's really quite the opposite, Running Backs are complementary pieces like everybody else who is not the quarterback on offense.

Stephen Jackson was the Rams best payer. Believe me, they didn't want it that way. They thought Bulger was going to be a star, they let a Hall of Famer walk to develop him. It didn't happen. And now they have a #1 overall who is underperforming at the position. None of that is Stephen Jackson's fault.

You seem to be arguing with an invisible person who says running backs are just as important as quarterbacks. I've never met that person. Or maybe you are still carrying baggage about the Browns spending #3 on a running back ... it doesn't matter if Weeden doesn't work out or they don't find someone else who can. If Weeden is great, then Trich becomes Emmit Smith, if weeden sucks then he becomes Steven Jackson.

After Luck and Griffin there was no QB worth the 3rd pick, your love for Tannehill withstanding.

Tony Dorsett had Roger Staubach as his quarterback while O.J. Simpson had Joe Ferguson.

Roger Craig got Joe Montana while Eric Dickerson got Dieter Brock.

Marshall Faulk got Kurt Warner while Barry Sanders got Scott Mitchell

They were all great draft picks and great players.

There was no QB at #3 so you pick the highest rated complimentary piece and take a stab later. It was the thing to do.

Right- except for some misguided souls like PG, everyone has come to believe (especially in today's NFL), the RB position has been devalued.

I said it right after the T-Rich pick, he had not better just be merely good, he had better be upper echelon HOF to justify taking him @ #3, and not only that- giving up picks on top of it. And now he's got a shin owie, and isn't playing I fear we drafted a China Doll.

Jim Brown and Walter Payton combined have two rings to show for their efforts- LaDanian Tomlinson who in my mind is a lock for the Hall, got shut out. He's got better credentials than Jackson- who might just suffer from Archie Manning syndrome in his HOF bid.

Well, off to the Northland for the Preseason Opener- Happy Trails, guys. 🙂

Yes. Shep seems to think that it is Passing game versus Running game in the NFL, but it's not, it's Passing game and running game in the NFL.

They are complementary. If you have success at one, it makes the other better.

You can't win without a good quarterback, good running backs are a commodity. When you find that good quarterback, you are going to need commodities all over the field on both sides of the ball ... that's the difference between a good team with a good quarterback and a champion.

We sunk a high draft pick into a running back because there was no QB at #3 (or 4). We already had the left tackle and the shutdown corner. We had nothing at RB and there was a top talent sitting there. Now the hope is that we have a valuable commodity at that position for 5 or 6 years while we continue to find that quarterback. If there was a WR rated that high and they took one I would have been OK with that as well, as he is a commodity.

Everyone wants the franchise QB. But you have to keep shopping for valuable guys around him even before you know if you have him. We went all in at RB. It doesn't mean we are going to build our offense around a running back, it means we filled a position with a top rated player. It's a good thing.

Ryan Tannehill was not worth our 4th pick ... I have serious doubts he'll be better than Weeden. We'll see. Either way, having a really good running back is a nice thing.
