Preseason Opener Thursday Night!
-
Weeden's going to play at least a quarter, maybe more if we're in mid-possession, just as I hoped. That's not normal for an established starter, which he isn't. Tannehill played one series, so you can see the difference in how they're perceived by their respective teams.
Preseason matters to Weeds. If he plays poorly and Campbell plays well, even in a "meaningless game," this will immediately become much more of a competition. Keep in mind that as of right now, today, Banner probably thinks there's about a 20% chance Weeden starts the opener next year. Maybe less.
Personnel wise, the Browns are well set up: If I'm Banner, I'm thinking we won't need a new starter on the OL, the front 7, running back, and hopefully WR (Little, Gordon, Bess, Benjamin). You think possibly TE, "non #1" CB, S as other spots you might like to upgrade, although you have a lot of young players who could emerge.
Certainly no big whoop there. You're basically compelled to sign about 4 significant free agents. You have like 10 draft picks including doubles in 3 and 4. My point: Weeden knows the Browns don't have a lot of needs... and they do have a lot of currency to go get a Bridgewater or Boyd.
Watch for Toni Gurley. Here he's the sleeper for that last spot. Really big and having a nice camp.

Will the Tavern be open?
The Tavern will be open.
If anyone has television tips or internet links, post them here.
Let the Chud era begin with a crisp 80 yard TD drive and no major injuries ...

Another look at the descending importance of the RB position: After 10 1,000 yard seasons, Steven Jackson was replaced in St. Louis by... nobody. They're going with former backups Richardson and Pead.
But they did bring in left tackle Jake Long and WR Tavon Austin. See the trend?
Jackson is going to be one of the first RBs to really challenge the HOF. He's going to have massive numbers and just a phenomenal career that really added up to basically nothing as far as the bottom line. Someone's gonna write that article very soon.

However, Miami's head coach is in his second year. This means Tannehill is in his second year with the offense. Meaning,
of course Weeden needs more like a quarter of work. The Browns are obviously in their first year of the coaches and system.
It's not a good comparison to Tannehill's situation at all. And Miami's offense struggled the first game out. And offenses lag
behind the defenses this early.
This is Weeden's huge chance to show he has "it". It's hard to predict - I look for Weeden to play fine. That's very hopeful thinking....

i really think you're overstating the fact that the running game is no longer important. i think to be a championship caliber team you need a good balance. ray rice just didn't block last year, neither did marshawn lynch.
do i think their shelf life (most) is very short? yes. do i think they should be picked in the top ten? no.

This is why we have such a poor school system. People don't know their history. This statement is as ignorant as those who say the World Trade Center was a conspiracy headed by George W. Bush. It was Lyndon Johnson who killed Kennedy. The Holocaust never happened. etc. etc. etc.
well then educate me (no, really don't) because all that the rest of the nation saw mayor white yellin into microphones how the city of cleveland will not be held hostage by the owner of a nfl team that wants a new stadium.
maybe i was drunk and didn't see that on espn, nbc, abc, cbs, cnn etc. etc.
that sure as hell sounded like a threat to me.
and BTW any team modell fielded would kick the living shit out what we have had since he left. yeah maybe he only won one title, but they won championship games, division games and they were a whole hell of a lot more entertaining that what i even seen in one game since 1999. so yeah FUCK MODELL for ulimately making the decision to leave but FUCK CLEVELAND for letting it get that far.
here's to banner (hopefully) changing that.

No, I am not going to educate you....unless you want to pay me for my time.
As far as Modell doing better than what we have had since? Sure. Any idjit can see that.
But, the fact still remains that during his 35 year tenure with the Browns, they played in exactly 2 championship game...going 1-1 back to back in 1964-1965. (In other words, none, zero, zip, nil, in his last 30 years here) Overall record during his tenure was pretty good: 278-233-6.
But, the point you forget is that: A. Modell VOLUNTARILY opted out of the Gateway Project, and. B. He ran and controlled the stadium...and ran it into the ground. C. The ideas that the City went along with to improve the stadium situation were ALL Modell's ideas, and D. the vote to improve the stadium occurred the day after he said he was trying to leave.
And, by the way...YES, I do believe you were drunk....because never, ever did I ever hear Mike White say that he would not have the city held hostage to an owner that owned a new stadium.
The next time I hear that stated will be the first time I will have heard that stated.
Find the video, or the newspaper quote where that occurred....because I never heard it ever...and I lived here in the Cleveland area where this situation was on the news all the time.
(no doubt White had some choice words about Modell....after his announcement...but Never before. They were having day to day negotiations all along...until Modell sneaked off to Baltimore in Lerner's plane)

Good God, let it go, already.
It's not Steven Jackson's fault the Rams sucked anymore than it Joe Thomas' fault the Browns suck.
Yes, the Rams should have taken a page from the Cleveland Browns model: Draft a Left Tackle (Thomas) and a Wide Receiver (Edwards) in the top 3 ... what could possibly go wrong?
Neither team has had good coaching, or more importantly, a good quarterback.
That is neither Joe Thomas' fault or Steven Jackson's fault.
The Rams never said "oh we don't need a QB now because we have a really good running back" ... it's really quite the opposite, Running Backs are complementary pieces like everybody else who is not the quarterback on offense.
Stephen Jackson was the Rams best payer. Believe me, they didn't want it that way. They thought Bulger was going to be a star, they let a Hall of Famer walk to develop him. It didn't happen. And now they have a #1 overall who is underperforming at the position. None of that is Stephen Jackson's fault.
You seem to be arguing with an invisible person who says running backs are just as important as quarterbacks. I've never met that person. Or maybe you are still carrying baggage about the Browns spending #3 on a running back ... it doesn't matter if Weeden doesn't work out or they don't find someone else who can. If Weeden is great, then Trich becomes Emmit Smith, if weeden sucks then he becomes Steven Jackson.
After Luck and Griffin there was no QB worth the 3rd pick, your love for Tannehill withstanding.
Tony Dorsett had Roger Staubach as his quarterback while O.J. Simpson had Joe Ferguson.
Roger Craig got Joe Montana while Eric Dickerson got Dieter Brock.
Marshall Faulk got Kurt Warner while Barry Sanders got Scott Mitchell
They were all great draft picks and great players.
There was no QB at #3 so you pick the highest rated complimentary piece and take a stab later. It was the thing to do.

Right- except for some misguided souls like PG, everyone has come to believe (especially in today's NFL), the RB position has been devalued.
I said it right after the T-Rich pick, he had not better just be merely good, he had better be upper echelon HOF to justify taking him @ #3, and not only that- giving up picks on top of it. And now he's got a shin owie, and isn't playing I fear we drafted a China Doll.
Jim Brown and Walter Payton combined have two rings to show for their efforts- LaDanian Tomlinson who in my mind is a lock for the Hall, got shut out. He's got better credentials than Jackson- who might just suffer from Archie Manning syndrome in his HOF bid.
Well, off to the Northland for the Preseason Opener- Happy Trails, guys.

Yes. Shep seems to think that it is Passing game versus Running game in the NFL, but it's not, it's Passing game and running game in the NFL.
They are complementary. If you have success at one, it makes the other better.
You can't win without a good quarterback, good running backs are a commodity. When you find that good quarterback, you are going to need commodities all over the field on both sides of the ball ... that's the difference between a good team with a good quarterback and a champion.
We sunk a high draft pick into a running back because there was no QB at #3 (or 4). We already had the left tackle and the shutdown corner. We had nothing at RB and there was a top talent sitting there. Now the hope is that we have a valuable commodity at that position for 5 or 6 years while we continue to find that quarterback. If there was a WR rated that high and they took one I would have been OK with that as well, as he is a commodity.
Everyone wants the franchise QB. But you have to keep shopping for valuable guys around him even before you know if you have him. We went all in at RB. It doesn't mean we are going to build our offense around a running back, it means we filled a position with a top rated player. It's a good thing.
Ryan Tannehill was not worth our 4th pick ... I have serious doubts he'll be better than Weeden. We'll see. Either way, having a really good running back is a nice thing.

I'm not so worried about this shin thing with Richardson, I think they're just making sure he is 100% ready to go for the regular season.
I heard a stat that the Browns were #2 in the league last season in offensive snaps facing more than 7 in the box so I agree that a good running back can compliment a QB very well, especially with the offense they plan to run.
After all, Elway never won a Super Bowl before he had Terrell Davis.

I go back to the Steelers, mid 00s: Do you think that all the difference in that team was a rookie QB that let them go 15-1 his rookie year, then win the SB in his second year. (In which he played fairly poorly). Hell no. They did just what you said: built the RB/WR/OL/Defense etc. all up around his ears. When BR got there, he finally made them a complete team....that maybe could have done almost as well with Tommy Maddox or Charlie Batch. BR had just enough extra to push that team over the edge.
It is a 22 man team. Yes, the QB is the pilot that steers the rest of that team.. but, you can have a great pilot, but if the rest of the plane isn't running right you can still end up in the Hudson River. Ask Sully.

Passing vs. Running: Here is the list of the Top 20 in Yards gained passing and in yards gained rushing, and the titles they each got:
Rushing:
Emmit Smith 3
Walter Payton 1
Barry Sanders 0
Curtis Martin 0
LaDanian Tomlinson 0
Jerome Bettis 1
Eric Dickerson 0
Tony Dorsett 1
Jim Brown 1
Marshall Faulk 1
Edgerrin James 0
Marcus Allen 1
Franco Harris 4
Thurman Thomas 0
Fred Taylor 0
John Riggins 1
Corey Dillon 1
OJ Simpson 0
Warrick Dunn 0
Ricky Watters 0
(does anyone think that Franco with he 4 titles is truly the best runner on this list?)
Passing:
Brett Favre 1
Dan Marino 0
Peyton Manning 1
John Elway 2
Warren Moon 0
Fran Tarkenton 0
Vinny Testaverde 0
Drew Brees 1
Tom Brady 3
Drew Bledsoe 0
Dan Fouts 0
Kerry Collins 0
Joe Montana 4
John Unitas 3
Dave Kreig 0
Boomer Esiason 0
Donovan McNabb 0
Jim Kelly 0
Jim Everett 0
Jim Hart 0
Here, the argument may be a little different. The Top 3 in titles on this list are Montana/Brady/Unitas. Is there any doubt that on anyone's list of the 5 greatest QBs of all time, those 3 are going to be on the list? And the guy with the next most on this list: Elway, would not also be up there?
Moral of the story: A QB is far more judge by the titles he directs his team to than a RB is. Franco and Emmit WERE vital commodities on dynasty teams. But those dynasties were sired more by the QBs than these RBs. (and by defense)

Fair point!

One thing I would do with Wheezy after he is done for the nite is send him up into the booth. Make him think about play calls and make him read the pre-snap Defense in lieu of holding a clip board on the sideline.
I Like your thinking. When he's not in there, let him see those opposing defenses from above.

Well, again, it's not passing versus running .. it's passing working with running.
Franco has four titles ... what do you know, so does Terry Bradshaw!
Emmit Smith has three titles ... hey, so does Troy Aikman!
John Elway didn't get two until he had a better balanced team around him around him, Dan Marino never got one because he didn't have enough of a team around him.
IF Weeden is the answer ... he is walking into a good situation with Thomas, Richardson, Gordon and Little in place and good coaches who understand balanced offense. IMO. Let's hope ... and pray .. Weeds is the one.
If not, there is always next year.
