I agree what Bernie said wasn't that horrible, but he still shouldn't have said it on a broadcast by the Browns tv network. If he said it on a radio program after the fact, then fine, but to go off like he did AS the game was going on,on the Browns TV network was wrong.
You could tell Jim Donovan was REALLY uncomfortable with what was going on, and he has been in the business way longer then Bernie.

I wouldn't give Jim Donovan a pass. He basically set up Kosar for his responses. When BK said, rightly, that the Rams receivers were playing horribly....Donovan asked the question "what should their parents think", and BK simply said "they should be embarrassed". So...do you think no one should talk about mamas?
And it was Donovan that gave the whole "Pope getting an autograph" story that set up the "bless me father for I have sinned" line.
If there is offense to be taken, then JD deserves equal remonstrance.

I disagree; I do not ever recall anyone expressing outrage or a coach mentioning they have lost respect for one Myron Cope when he spoke such filth towards not only Browns squad members, but the city and citizens as well. I personally could care less what other teams employees and / or fans say about us. Hell check out Cincitucky radio play by play and listen to Dave Lapham grunt, groan and drool all over himself during a game...it is all entertainment;
Glad you brought up Myron Cope- besides being obnoxious (and if Fisher thought Bernie was being politically incorrect) Get a load of THIS: He gets also my vote as the most obnoxious radio voice I've ever heard.
Yeah., Cinitucky announcer Dave Lapham is the worst homer I've ever heard- he makes anything Bernie did look tame.
For the young 'uns I've always said Cope sounded remarkably similar to this old time "voice" of a lot of cartoon characters- Arnold Stang. Fast forward to 2:16.

Thanks to NFL Network the whole country got to be treated to the Kosar show. I don't know what I loved more, the Rocky slur or the hilarious inconsistencies. Like when Bernie ragged on the Rams for running a "stupid screen" that supposedly would only work during pre season, then slobbered all over the same play when Cleveland ran it. Or telling us "by formation" that the Brownies had no shot of throwing it for a score -- right before Weeden threw the touchdown pass. Kosar sounds like a dumber, drunker Howard Cosell. Personally I loved his ripping on players and wish more announcers had the seeds to start doing that. In fact I think Kosar should get a national TV job. Just one big parade of unintentional, unintelligible hilarity, week after week! Imagine the sound bite potential...
This comming from a fan that had the obnoxious Myron Cope...get out of here junior...go play with bens jock..

Except, of course, he is by far one of the most astute analysts out there. He can dissect plays, and predict plays with alacrity.
But, here is the problem with him that people don't see or realize: all that so call slurring or whatever? All that is is "Youngstownese". Which, unfortuenately is a bit too close to Pittsburghese. He sounds the way he does because that is the way people from over that way sound.
Like someone said, listen to Myron Cope. The guy was nigh on unintelligible, and both he and BK are merely caustic and acerbic in their analysis.

Uh, I don't think you can blame it on regional dialect, Gimp. His speech is a result of too many blows to the head, drinking, medications or maybe a combination of them all. A lot of players have suffered this kind of thing. I've heard people from Youngstown. They don't normally talk like that.
Cope is apples and oranges. His voice was like nails on a chalkboard, but he actually was a celebrated sportswriter (nationally known) before doing radio. If you bother to look at his background, you'll learn he was hired BECAUSE of his voice, a la Howard Cosell. They were looking for obnoxious back then.
Obviously Kosar knows a ton about football, but that doesn't make him a great color guy per se. I pointed out two examples where he totally blew calls. I'm sure there were more, I didn't watch the whole thing.
I don't mind caustic at all. Like I said, I enjoyed Kosar's honesty, the Rams do have some lousy players, and it's refreshing to hear. I'm sure the league isn't thrilled though.
I never have any problems understanding anything that Kosar says.
And I don't buy your opinion that Kosar blew calls. I think it was your comprehension of what he said that blew.
And, I too have heard many people from Youngstown. A fair share of them, indeed, sound like that.

Bernie Kosar an astute analyst? Really? And just who on network television or in the NFL coaching camps agrees with you? The only job this guy can find is among the safety of homers, which is okay. However, when it is your own employers, coworkers and colleagues reprimanding you, then something is seriously wrong. Love the guy all you want, but the criticisms and reprimands are coming from his own, not from his rivals.
Plenty of people have taken blows to the head, Bradshaw, Marino, Phil Simms, Thiesman and quite a few others who do just fine in the commentators booth. Not only do these guys not slur, but they don't say stupid things to get themselves in trouble. I have heard Kosar in recent times at other functions and he speaks just fine. He signed an autograph for my daughter at training camp this year and likewise sounded perfectly fine.
Slurred speech from brain trauma doesn't fade in and out. While I don't doubt Bernie took his share of licks, my intuition tells me that he is an alcoholic who needs help. Bernie Kosar is in a horrible place in life and it has to eat him up inside to see other players with successful post-NFL playing careers, and he is stuck getting his hands slapped by family members at his own hometown booth.
Cossell like to drink, but he never ridiculed struggling players. This is not 1970 and the days of being frank and politically correct are long gone. You might approve of and beg for more of Kosar's "brave", telling-it-like-it-is ranting, but if he is looking for success and acceptance, he needs to grow up and realize that times have changed, and there is no market, no advertisers, and no media entities looking to hire slurring, insulting, hard-headed on-air personalities. Do you really think anyone is lining up to give this guy a job? Do you really think that after the preseason is over the Browns are going to bring Bernie back in any capacity? They won't fire him because it will make a lot of fans mad. However, you would have to be a moron to not know that the Browns will avoid his future antics by just not hiring him for new opportunities. If the Browns have no job for him, just who do you think will hire him?

Yes. Bernie Kosar is a VERY astute football analyst. Anyone who knows football and has heard him analyze a game will know that.
As for his reprimand coming from his employers, sure, they are doing what is politically correct to salve the butthurt mistachioed pussy.
Plenty of people have taken blows to the head, Bradshaw, Marino, Phil Simms, Thiesman and quite a few others who do just fine in the commentators booth. And he sounded perfectly fine the other night as well..except for his typical Youngstownese. There was no issue with slurring on his part. The issue was with those who wanted to make it personal about Kosar over his responses to Donovan's questions. What should the Rams receivers parents be? They should be embarassed by their poor performance.
And God save us all from having to watch Kellen Clemens play QB. If Kosar had simply said: "Clemens is a poor QB who cannot really play in this league", instead of doing the same thing in a somewhat humorous way...again, in reply to a question by Donovan that was in the middle of a religious anecdote by Jim.

How the fuck do you know where Bernie Kosar is in his life? He might be just fine. And what other great post careers have other NFL players had?
Look, I have seen the analysts they have on ESPN/CBS/Fox etc. Kosar knows more about football than all of them....Tom Jackson/K. Johnson/Cris Carter/Dan Marino/Boomer Esiason/Bradshaw/Howie Long/ Michael Strahan/etc. etc. etc. etc.
Only ex-coaches can match his football acuity. BK just still has that football player, somewhat gruff speech delivery pattern.
Cossell like to drink, but he never ridiculed struggling players.
Are you shitting me? Were you even alive when Cosell was announcing? If you were, you wouldn't say that.
This is not 1970 and the days of being frank and politically correct are long gone. In other words, you want a bunch of fucking yes men, Stepford clones to be announcers?
Give me Howard Cosell.

Why should I really give a shit? If these networks were sharp...and most of them are not, they would want someone to bring in a person who has controversial opinions...and who CAN back them up with a true insight to the game.
But, you are probably right. They will just want their Stepford wives to come forth upon the programming.
Look, sorry, but they hire a lot of these guys right off the field who cannot speak English very well....where half of what they say is ebonics....So, if they can tolerate ebonics, why not Youngstownese? We know why.

Stupid comments like when Bradshaw said Reggie Bush looked like he was chasing a bucket of chicken? -

Interesting/entertaining read on the Kosar/Rams situation, primarily stating that the NFL...and its media affilates take themselves way too seriously to the point that an an analysts can't make accurate, but pointed criticism of NFL players and coaches? This guy calls BS on all that.
