So? Are we going to have a reincarnation of the Phipps/Sipe quarterback controversy, only 40 years later?

For those of you who can recall.....and if you cannot recall they invented this new thing called reading, you know that Phipps was the first round draft pick with the big strong arm that was the designated leader of this team. However, a couple of years after he was taken with much ballyhoo (after all, Paul Warfield was traded to obtain him), a skinny little boy from down San Diego way...who knew a place where they played guitars all night and all day....was drafted in the 13th round. He was neither as big/strong/fast nor had the arm strenght as Phipps, but had a certain je ne sais quoi that turned him into a leader, and thus replaced Phipps as the Browns QB.

Do we have that with Weeden and Hoyer? I don't know.

First off, I haven't seen enough of Weeden really to know if he really is the kind of sideways guy that Phipps was. Phipps started here for like 4-5 years....and we learned that he had difficulty reading defenses and throwing accurately even though he was a big armed guy. Also, he couldn't seem to command a huddle the way Sipe eventually could.

Likewise, Hoyer has played all of one game for the Browns, and though, apparently he looked a little Sipe-ish in that one game, that doesn't mean that he is not really just the backup QB that he has been for the last 5 years

Though...think about this: in the 70s and 80s it was generally thought that it took about 4-5 years for a QB to really learn his trade. Sipe was on the Taxi squad for two years without playing a down in the NFL, and he was a backup for at least another couple of years. It wasn't until like his 5th year in the league that he became and established himself as the starting QB of an NFL team....at the age of 27, which is essentially what Hoyer is now.

So can we be going through Phipps/Sipe Part Deux.....only in a much more compressed time frame?

But just based on the sentiment you seem to post with, I can assume that both of those quarterbacks were good. Now I'll assure you that this is not that controversy revisited, as both Hoyer and Weeden suck fat balls.

By your statements I guess you are not old enough to remember the Phipps/Sipe issue. Perhaps you could take my suggestion and read about it before assuming anything.

        Gotta agree.

Hoyer is or never will be, Sipe-ish.

Not sure if he will go as low as sucking fat balls, but I'm not getting the comparison.

It seems to me that that last minute comeback to win the game Sunday in only the second start of his NFL career was decidedly Sipe-ish....Kardiac Kid-ish. That is why I brought it up. Wouldn't that be fair to say?

yes - especially because of the win now mindset....

but from a fan standpoint - I hope it turns out exactly like that "70's show" 🙂

No prob, I'm sure you missed a lot .... it has a little more juice now that Hoyer looked downright "Sipeish".

Well, I think Hoyer is seeing the field fairly similarly to a Sipe or Kosar.

The Big NFL Arm doesn't mean "sees the field".

Haven't heard, but I doubt they will start Weeden. The difference in seeing the field makes

a huge diffference. And yes, Gordon returning does too. I'd have Weeden on a short leash now...if

                    they decide to start him.

If they start Weeden it may be so they can run him behind Mcgahee. Or an option type offense. They mixed things up pretty good last week. Lets hope they can keep the other guys guessing and the right game plan.

He won one game. Barely. Against a very poor defense that was missing their #1 QB.

Would it be nice if he became the next Tom Brady? Yes.

                        Is it likely. Certainly not.

Not the next Tom Brady. Just the next Brian Sipe.......but I agree with you, being the next Brian Sipe is not all it would be cracked up to be as people forget.....as entertaining and popular and exciting as Brian was as the Browns QB, he did not lead the Browns to even one single post season win in his career. (Compare to say Kosar with multiple post season wins)

Hoyer played like crap. Sorry, but rewatch the game. The Browns won inspite of Hoyer.

Already have Hempie... and you are dead wrong. Bad case of rectalitis pigmentosa I'm guessing. (Watching with your head up your ass.)

I made the Phipps/ Sipe case when it was Wheezy vs. Colt, Gip...

Wheezy vs. Hoyer works as well.

Hoyer had crappy moments yes. He also had very good moments. Overall I think we need to reserve judgement until we see more. There are plenty of one hit wonders out there. Hell Colt and Fry had a great game from time to time. The Vikings secondary sucks and their overall defense isn't much better. Time will tell, I hope he is the next Brady because if he is we are set bigtime with the draft picks we have as well. We could put a line in front of him like an iron wall. If he isn't lets hope Weeden is. I am still not convinced as some of you are that he is a lost cause.

I liked what I saw for the most part. Ints can and often are fatal. But the goahead drive at the end was a thing of beauty and made up for a sucky 3rd qtr. I wanna see more is all I can say.

Most of his "very good" moments were due to defense failure. The first TD to Gordon was a outright blown coverage which no other reciever on the Browns would have a chance at.

Hoyer is a one read bore. Will Chud take him down for Campbell(Weeden won't be cleared to play) to try and save the game?

But just based on the sentiment you seem to post with, I can assume that both of those quarterbacks were good. Now I'll assure you that this is not that controversy revisited, as both Hoyer and Weeden suck fat balls.

Yeah, I'm sure you know that after Hoyer has all of 2 NFL games as a starter under his belt. Since you seem to be lacking in knowledge of NFL history- a couple of HOF quarterbacks- Johnny Unitas and Len Dawson both got cut before they made it big. Think the Falcons may have thought they blew it big time trading Bret Farve for a second round pick?
