Why Do Some People Hype Up Hoyer?

The Browns Board

  • Bottom line on Couch: stupid. Good old-fashioned stupid. I wanted so badly for him to be good but he just didn't have it between the ears. The shoulder was almost merciful.

I'm a big believer in a quarterback with presence, a guy who at least SEEMS smart. Obviously Brady, Manning, Brees, and Rodgers all seem like the smartest guys in the room and I think other players want that. Freeman's super smart but also comes off "soft" and disengaged. RG3 is smart AND a fiery competitor. Russell Wilson seems like he's just about to teach an AP Econ class and I think his teammates probably dig that. Ryan Tannehill had like a 3.7 and a 33 on the Wonderlic, has a casual confidence but is becoming more assertive (or so I've read).

Best comparison: E.J. V. Geno. Geno has a lot of trouble expressing himself. E.J. has the bearings of a 30-year-old man, an alpha confidence that blew people away in interviews and made him the top quarterback in the draft (which nobody could have predicted five months earlier).

Yeah, that's one of my problems with Weeds. He comes off as a gee-shucks "slinger," as he calls himself. Not hyper-focused or intense, the Anti-Manning. Anybody envision him going off like Tom Brady does, let alone Marino or Unitas? Or Sipe?

I don't know enough about Hoyer yet but Gordon said he's way more intense.

Something that caught my eye about Hoyer: after the ravens loss there was the typical shots of the players milling around and there was Hoyer, the then 3rd string qb standing there chatting up Flacco the super bowl MVP and I thought "this guy is the leader", because Weeden was not in sight. Hoyer seems more confident, more poised and passes the eye test. He seems to command more respect in the huddle and ill take that in the interim. I'm excited to watch a good game Sunday win or lose.

  • Even of they get beat down Sunday I don't want to see Weeden ever again. I've seen enough Weeden for a lifetime.

    yessir! I agree.

  • This administration is over Weeden. I don't give a shit how much Chud or anybody else tries to deny it.

then i guess you hated DA and brady queef, cuz tim couch had more talent and more between the ears than they did.....just no OLine in front of him.

    period. nuff said.

  • Anderson's a fucking moron. He got like a 16 on his Wonderlic just to prove it. Brady Quinn is a moderately intelligent person who went to an actual accredited university (Couch went to Kentucky) and got a so-so 28 on the Wonderlic. He's not a rocket scientist but he isn't stupid.

I think Couch got a 22, to be serious. He's not Retarded... he just isn't super bright. And I thought he had good but not great arm talent and decent wheels. He was way overdrafted but I thought he could've been good. I pulled for him.

    yeah me too.

too bad they didn't draft an OLine for him.

  • The team we had in 1999 was a joke. If Couch had been smart he would have refused to play here like Elway did with the then Baltimore Colts.

What a douche move that was....and Eli too for that matter. If I was the Colts (or Chargers) GM I woulda drafted em and tested their word. Make em go play baseball or sit out if they think they can pick n choose where they play like they're any more important than any other rookie.
  • I've seen several on here bring up Horton's thoughts on Hoyer.

    This came out today:

Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton is familiar with quarterback Brian Hoyer because they were both with the Arizona Cardinals last season. So Horton was not surprised that Hoyer led the Browns to their first victory of the season Sunday by throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Jordan Cameron with 51 seconds left.

“I saw him in practice and the first pass in Arizona was amazing what he threw,” Horton said. “He threw a crossing route right over my head that had zip, velocity, accuracy.

“Brian’s a leader. He’s very calm under pressure. He understands defenses. He’s smart. He’s mobile. He knows where to go with the ball. We embrace him. The defense loved that he was out there throwing the ball around. I’m sure Jordan Cameron and Josh Gordon loved him last week. We love Brian.”

Amen. If they thought Weeden had a prayer of being a Franchise guy- they never would have traded Richardson. Soooo obvious- that move was made to obtain the ammunition necessary to move into the top 5 next year to land "The Guy". Now if Hoyer shocks us and the world- we're in great position to shore up any weak links in the team.

  • Because the Hoyer TEAR DOWN, is what this board lives for....

    ??????????????????

don't get you. if the kid wins......we might have something. if not throw weeden back in and see if his 'benching' actually might have woken him up.

if not lombanner will throw 4 picks at movin up to draft 'their' guy.

    lord help us all.

If neither do good we'll be pickin top 6 again and probably won't need to move up.

Perhaps...but it is still the HC that names the starting QB.

kinda saying they don't want to take a chance and miss their RG3 like the holmgren FO did.

a jump from a six pickk to #1 is going to cost. but hey we gotta great track record of moving up and picking guys.

  • The QB draft class looks good. I'm not much of a fan for breaking the bank on these running QBs. It hasn't worked out well for the Redskins. I can understand trading some picks for a big pocket passes, but it's too dangerous to spend the majority of picks on a scrambler that will more than likely get injured.

Depending on our draft pick, i'd rather just take what's available at QB. Hopefully Hoyer lights it up and we don't need to worry about drafting a QB so high. I'm just hoping to see improvement on his mistakes. But I liked what I saw out of him.

  • ^yes. 100%

  • I don't wanna expose a QB to 200 runs a year either. Here and there, like Chud did with Cam, that's cool. It's best for turning a broken pocket into an 8-yard gain, which Aaron Rodgers does so well (and now Tannehill).

But most of these guys we're talking about are passers who can run (Bridgewater, Hundley, and Boyd especially). Yeah, Manziel runs around a lot and so does Mariota, but any coach who isn't Chip Kelly is going to take care of his guy.

I think RG3 is gonna be fine. He'll run less but the kid has insane arm talent, too. And every single intangible you could ever dream of, really. He was better than Luck last year and I think he'll be better than Luck over the long haul, too. I like Luck... but I think he's a bit overrated.
