Will Brian Hoyer be in Cleveland next season?

  • Totally disagree, Erie. I think this team is a great quarterback from 10-6 today, right now. Dead solid guarantee you we'll sign 3-4 fairly prominent young free agents. We did last year and next year we're almost compelled by the CBA. If we also drafted in the high first, second, two thirds, two fourths and a fifth all expected to make the team? That's almost more youth than this team can stand, frankly.

You put a top tier QB, a 2nd round RB, and a serious free agent #2 WR (Gordon is a #1) on this team? With this defense? 12-4. Depth? That's what the 4ths, 5th, and 6th are for, and UDFAs. And lower-tier f/a.

You gotta get the quarterback. There are no shortcuts.

  • Hoyer will be back next year because he has fans in the FO and can mentor the qb we pick up in the draft. Weeden is back only if he leads the team to the playoffs. Campbell is out if he does, maybe he stays if weeden fails.

don't know how much faith I'd have in a teammate with a whole three starts under his belt "mentoring" me. there is no substitution for live game experience. you either hit the numbers or you don't. The Browns need to dump the concept of "mentoring" and qb "development". It's just a smokescreen they hide behind when they realize they picked the wrong guy. And, as we all know, they've got plenty of success at that.

every fucking year we have the endless drivel of who and how we should pick the "guy" for QB. that's all well and good but does it always have to be four or five games into the season when the imprudent speculation begins? don't get me wrong, if you enjoy the banter and discussions more power to you. But for me, I'd rather watch a banana turn brown.

Hoys lost his composure on the run that may end up costing him his career. His top priority, and it really isn't a tough one, is to protect himself at all cost. Dude was gripping hard and forgot all about fundamentals with his half assed attempt at a slide. Coach Turner needs to take a large part of blame also. He did not prepare Hoyer properly and his fucked up incompetence will have significant short and long term implications...If he hasn't already been tuned up by Chuds, B and L he needs to be. I'd show the loser the door. Without accountability you have nothing.

I'll be the reincarnation of E Hemmingway after a few more. But, I doubt if you know who that is.

  • We're screwed either way it seems. But the whole idea of just throwing away picks to move up because we're a "deep" team is Retarded.

  • The Browns won't trade picks to move up. This qb class doesn't have qb's that are that elite from

    the rest of the class.

Mariotta is #1 one place, Bridgewater is #1 someplace else, a couple of others are spoken of as

having the ability to surge ahead of them.

I just want them to draft a qb, and they will, who sees the field in the pros, like a Kosar, Peyton....

he doesn't have to be the fastest dual threat, the biggest arm. He just has to be the guy. If he had

a stronger arm, I'd draft Minnion and let him learn behind Hoyer for a year, or part of it. Minnion

so far, would probly be a second rounder. But he sees the field perhaps the best of any other qb

talked about as going in the high first round. We'll see.

Gee, too many draft picks? Then we rinse wash and repeat what we did this spring, turn a second into a future first, and third into a second. The Patriots made a living off this scenario.

1\2 these stud 2014 qbs are going to bust, and bust hard in the pros- history says so.

    agreed.

but it's like live by the sword or die by it. what're gonna do? if weeden plays his ass off and looks like a pro the rest of the year and we go 8 and 8 then the QB (IMO) would NOT have to be the first pick.

we all know the list of positions that need to be upgraded and depth added to so i won't keep mentioning it. i mean what position other than QB nowadays is worth a 1st round pick? the RBs' shelf life is what 3 years? then we need a RG and RT. i saw a couple of players yesterday that played TE but were so quick and fast with great hands that i'd drop a pick on them in the first. CB?

hell. i don't know. i think we all need to chill and let the season play out. 2 more games and we'll know a lot more. by the end of the year we'll all be lombari and banner, believe me.

like you said: rinse wash and repeat. hopefully this time we buy some decent shampoo and not the JandJ baby shit we've been bringing in here of late.

  • Most likely he'll compete for the starting job. He signed a two yr deal and I really don't see him being released.

  • The more I think about the injury/recovery time table, the more complicated it gets. I doubt Brian will be ready to do any real work until the start of camp......at best. I really don't see Weeden as being in the picture (man I hope someone points this out to me after he leads us to the division title and playoff wins) so that means that whatever qb we take in the draft, be it a high/low #1 or a mid #3, will get all of the off season reps.

So unless the FO stuns us all with a veteran qb trade in the off season, we will be hanging our hats on either a guy coming off a serious knee injury with only 4 NFL starts, and really only 3 games played, and a rook..........Gonna be interesting to say the least, unless the Statue of Liberty leads us to the promise land and makes all of this moot.

Brandon Weedens contract is fully guaranteed through next year, so unless we trade him which I think is highly unlikely he will be on the roster next year.

He's better than pretty much any 3rd choice we'd have - although I realise saying that leaves me open to the Hoyer type comments.

  • Again: If the Browns draft 6th, it might not be an issue. If they draft 12th... we'll package it with the other first to move up and get the quarterback. The Browns were pretty wide open about that being the purpose of acquiring the pick. We have no shortage of assets to fill other needs (right-side blocker, WR, RB, maybe some size at corner).

You don't really need to worry about how a team's going to upgrade the bottom of the roster or add depth. Adding a corner gives us depth there. Drafting a safety in the 4th gives us depth there. Drafting a RB in the 2nd round creates depth there. Adding a right-side blocker gives us depth there. Drafting an ILB in round 5 gives us depth there. And so on.

The only thing really worth worrying about is getting a great quarterback and putting him in a position to succeed. What's that? Great coaching. Check. Great left tackle. Check. A running game. Check (after upgrading right side of line and RB crew). Passcatchers. Check (after adding a veteran WR to go with Gordon, Cameron, Bess, Little).

You don't get stingy at quarterback in a quarterback league unless you simply don't have a calendar or understand the NFL in 2013/14. You put your biggest chips there. You go get the guy you really want, whether it's Boyd or Mariota or a fast riser like Mettenberger (he's gonna start showing up in round 1 this week).

  • By the way, Pluto wrote today that the Browns were going to draft a quarterback high up no matter what Hoyer did... and the same goes double for Weeden. Now that's probably a bit of an exaggeration and leaves the definition of "high up" pretty open. But the injury defines it as top 10, I'd say.

Fully guaranteed means nothing. If the FO thinks he is not ever going to be their guy, and his presence will only be a distraction, he will be gone. Again, man I hope someone digs up this thread later to make me eat my words, I would love nothing more. But until the 1st rd Statue of Liberty proves he can play at the same level as a guy that had only 1 NFL start prior to this season, then he will remain nothing more than a distraction.

  • I can say, "Hey, maybe Weeden's off the charts the rest of the year and..."

But the truth is, he's looked like the same guy since he started his very first game in preseason 2012 and that's been a while. Given tons of time and wide open receivers, he can throw it really far, really hard, and spins it consistently.

But if the defense doesn't cooperate and insists on leaving guys only "NFL open" or, God forbid, rushing the passer? He really struggles and doesn't process quickly enough. He's quite a lot like Derek Anderson. No "spot accuracy" on fades or crosses, rarely puts a receiver in position for YAC like Hoyer did.

He's 30. I just don't see him suddenly changing his core characteristics.

RG3 sustained an injury much worse tearing both mcl and acl and came back at the start of the season and he got hurt in the playoffs. Hoyer will be ready by training camp.

The current FO does but I think they wanted to give him a fair shake in a better system.

Blame Mike Holmgren for reaching on Weeden. He would have easily dropped into round 2 or beyond.

Like someone else said, were paying him already and he is better than anyone we would bring in (Tyler Thigpen? Lol) to be our third string, so it doesn't matter if they view him as a long term answer or not. I highly doubt he's a distraction because he handled the Hoyer situation with nothing but class.
