Will Brian Hoyer be in Cleveland next season?

The Browns Board

  • By the way, Pluto wrote today that the Browns were going to draft a quarterback high up no matter what Hoyer did... and the same goes double for Weeden. Now that's probably a bit of an exaggeration and leaves the definition of "high up" pretty open. But the injury defines it as top 10, I'd say.

The more I think about the injury/recovery time table, the more complicated it gets. I doubt Brian will be ready to do any real work until the start of camp......at best. I really don't see Weeden as being in the picture (man I hope someone points this out to me after he leads us to the division title and playoff wins) so that means that whatever qb we take in the draft, be it a high/low #1 or a mid #3, will get all of the off season reps.

So unless the FO stuns us all with a veteran qb trade in the off season, we will be hanging our hats on either a guy coming off a serious knee injury with only 4 NFL starts, and really only 3 games played, and a rook..........Gonna be interesting to say the least, unless the Statue of Liberty leads us to the promise land and makes all of this moot.

Brandon Weedens contract is fully guaranteed through next year, so unless we trade him which I think is highly unlikely he will be on the roster next year.

Fully guaranteed means nothing. If the FO thinks he is not ever going to be their guy, and his presence will only be a distraction, he will be gone. Again, man I hope someone digs up this thread later to make me eat my words, I would love nothing more. But until the 1st rd Statue of Liberty proves he can play at the same level as a guy that had only 1 NFL start prior to this season, then he will remain nothing more than a distraction.

  • I can say, "Hey, maybe Weeden's off the charts the rest of the year and..."

But the truth is, he's looked like the same guy since he started his very first game in preseason 2012 and that's been a while. Given tons of time and wide open receivers, he can throw it really far, really hard, and spins it consistently.

But if the defense doesn't cooperate and insists on leaving guys only "NFL open" or, God forbid, rushing the passer? He really struggles and doesn't process quickly enough. He's quite a lot like Derek Anderson. No "spot accuracy" on fades or crosses, rarely puts a receiver in position for YAC like Hoyer did.

He's 30. I just don't see him suddenly changing his core characteristics.

I wish the last front office would've seen that.

RG3 sustained an injury much worse tearing both mcl and acl and came back at the start of the season and he got hurt in the playoffs. Hoyer will be ready by training camp.

The current FO does but I think they wanted to give him a fair shake in a better system.

Blame Mike Holmgren for reaching on Weeden. He would have easily dropped into round 2 or beyond.

Like someone else said, were paying him already and he is better than anyone we would bring in (Tyler Thigpen? Lol) to be our third string, so it doesn't matter if they view him as a long term answer or not. I highly doubt he's a distraction because he handled the Hoyer situation with nothing but class.
  • If we're not drafting in the top 5 i'd almost like to see us go with two premier OL in the 1st round. We need it. If there's no 1st round OL available I wouldn't mind us getting a top CB or maybe even another stud OLB cause Groves isn't gonna cut it in the rotation. We need someone to spell Kruger. I'm just loathe to draft qb's even if they were highly rated. Like I think we could have drafted Luck and for some reason he would suck here.

I doubt Hoyer will be in our training camp. I expect to draft a high round QB and either release or trade Hoyer.

They should keep Hoyer. He is a great backup.

Unless he suffers LeCharles Bentley bum knee staph post op, you're out of your mind. Hoyer is only owed $1 million next year- dirt cheap for an experienced backup, (can we agree he's shown more in two starts than Weeden has in 17?) and if he's recovered enough, expect him to push for a starting job while our (supposed) rookie qb sits.

If anyone's getting shown the door it's Weedster- unless he totally lights it up the rest of the year. He's on his third chance to show the FO something.

    this.

And drafting two offensive linemen in the first would be stupid as all hell.

  • To my knowledge Lombardi is arguably the largest Hoyer fan of any GM. I would be shocked if he was released before next season.

Lombardi is also a big fan of Mallett. I wouldn't be stunned if we traded for him with our second 1st and didn't draft any QBs.

just to ask your opinion and not to start shit......

who or what positions would you pick with our 2 first rounders?

  • Secondary help, and maybe a guard or an offensive weapon with the 2nd pick. Preferably an offensive weapon.

We obviously found out that Chud's offense works best through a QB that can make snap throws and quick decisions. Not only does our offense look more fluid, the line looks better when Hoyer was in there. Whoever our QB is next year will take pressure off our o-linemen and allow us to fill those holes in the 2nd and 3rd days of the draft.

I'll be the reincarnation of E Hemmingway after a few more. But, I doubt if you know who that is.

If we need a QB, get Boyd - Bridgewater won't be there. If we are set on Hoyer (BIG IF), then grab a freaking offensive lineman (Matthews?) and get someone like Allen Robinson or Marquize Lee.

Funny. We could have four first rounders and a near first rounder. Really pile all that cap on the OL. Because everybody knows Peyton Manning's just a product of his 458 different OL over the past decade or so.

Yikes. We're gonna OL our way to greatness! And sure, draft another first round OLB to go with the four or so we have. Love it!

  • Hoys lost his composure on the run that may end up costing him his career. His top priority, and it really isn't a tough one, is to protect himself at all cost. Dude was gripping hard and forgot all about fundamentals with his half assed attempt at a slide. Coach Turner needs to take a large part of blame also. He did not prepare Hoyer properly and his fucked up incompetence will have significant short and long term implications...If he hasn't already been tuned up by Chuds, B and L he needs to be. I'd show the loser the door. Without accountability you have nothing.

ACL reconstruction is a heavy duty trauma to the body and psyche. Look how tough a time RG3 has had. The jury is still out on him. Hoyers market value took a major hit and there are going to be a lot of questions. Will he ever be the same guy he was before Thursday night? That's the million dollar question and odds are that he won't. I like the kid but he is facing a tough battle that most professional athletes don't win.

Really, this whole episode has troubled me. . Time for a Makers rocks.

This is spot on. I fear that slide may have cost him his career. He's been a career 3rd stringer and when he finally got his chance, the slide. Chances don't happen often in this league. The likelyhood of drafting a QB, his recovery, etc..all are factors. Regardless, I don't think he'll ever have the ceiling he had pre injury.
