What they'll probably do
-
That is a fantastic example of what they won't do. Anything that doesn't start with a quarterback at #10 or higher can't find its way to right no matter how hard it tries!
The Browns will field a really fun offense next year with a QB who can throw AND move. Hoyer will either be the backup or start for a few games, depending on which of the two guys we get (Bridgewater is NFL ready out of the box, Mariota's formidable skills might need an extra month).
Our line seems to play more than fine as long as Weeden isn't at QB. And we don't even have Pinkston yet. Among the least of our worries.

Just being the voice of reason here. Overly optimistic about landing Mariotta or Bridgewater Shep. If they're as good as you think they are, no way the Jags and Bucs are going to pass on them. You could have offered Indy the Moon for Luck, and they weren't budging out of #1. Only reason the Rams took the RG III deal is they already had Bradford.
Let's look at the rest of our schedule and see what's going to transpire too. This is assuming Campbell doesn't get hurt. Can we beat the Ravens this Sunday? I'll put on my homer glasses and say yes. We damn near beat them on the road, minus Gordon and Wee-tard tossing the rock. I'll say losses to the Bungles, Pats, and Da Bears. All the other games are winnable. Puts us at 8-8 or so for the year. Moving up from the 12-18 range to the top 2 isn't realistic from a draft pick perspective- it would take an RG III + deal to do so- you'd have to toss in Mingo or Haden on top of it to get there.

You could be right, H. I'm not 100% convinced the Bucs will give up on Glennon when he's not looking all that bad. If he shows a bit of an arc as the season progresses, they might like the idea of sticking with him and raiding the Browns or someone else for a lot of picks.
Put it this way: We don't have someone to compare to Glennon. Sadly.
Jags seems like a slam dunk for Bridgewater to me. Poor guy.

I think we can all agree that, though he's played well, Mingo wasn't exactly a player at a position of need. So with the FO's propensity to not give a shit what anyone thinks they should do, I'm half expecting them to trade schwartz, draft someone like Jake Matthews to be the RT and then pick up Louis Nix or some other DT with the second.
"Football games are won and lost on the lines, and we feel these guys will help us protect our QB and and get after their QB"
Start Brian Hoyer, get Lache Seahorse in the second, let Mack walk and pick up a C in the third round.
Trade Brandon Weeden and a seventh round pick for nothing.
Jags may decide to live with Glennon... and demand a King's ransom for their #1...
Anyone paying a high price for the pick of this litter will be sorry.

Not sure why we need another DT (especially playing a 3-4), but I've already said that we are in need of a RT upgrade. Jake is clearly the stand out lineman in this draft. So I could live with your hypothetical.
But warning... if you google "Lache Seahorse" you will end up in an infinite loop back to this thread.

Yup... and now with Bradford down can't discount the Rams interest in a QB. Ditto the Vikes with their QB trinity of mediocrity...
There will be a number of teams with significant QB needs picking ahead of us. And all will be playing their need level "up" to command more for their pick.
Meanwhile AJ Mac will await some smart team in the 3rd round "bargain basement"... with Manziel possibly only a floor above.

Bradford was playing well before he was dinged. Rams won't take a QB in 1. Maybe 2 but not 1. Vikings are certainly candidates, along with Jags, Browns, maybe Bucs, a couple others.
The price for trading up isn't really that relevant. You absolutely can't compete in this league without a special quarterback, making him worth just about anything. Our second #1 came at the price of a running back who gains way less per carry than a back we could draft in round 3, so it came for nothin', basically.
When you're sitting on 10 picks and 30 mill, not to mention an excellent defense, you have more resources than needs. The Browns don't want 8 rooks, let alone 10, on a team that's insanely young. We need 3-4 serious free agents (par for the course) and maybe 3 significant draft picks, or a total of 7 guys we really expect to play: QB, rotation RB, 2nd WR, 2nd TE, another corner, maybe a safety, probably an ILB to compete.
So basically we want to use maybe five of those draft picks. Possibly 6. I'd gladly trade both firsts and a third go get Mariota or Bridgewater. Why not? Still have a 2nd, 3rd, and two 4ths... plus 30 mill!

Again...just having a bit of a joke. I would bit disappointed with drafting an OT, DT, DE, OLB or C with our first picks, we're all set there.

From what I've read there are 9 QB's that are going to have first round grades coming out this year. I don't think we need to panic and trade a bunch of picks to move up. Take whatever comes to us where we pick in the mid first round.

The best scenario is that the team continues to improve and this team starts to WIN down the stretch in Chud's system. Then, like you said, you take the best QB that happens to be there and you bring him along behind a veteran like Hoyer (or maybe Campbell) into a good situation as opposed to a bad team / bad situation where he is forced to start right away.
I think winning/drafting smart is a much better way than losing/drafting high.
If the team builds some momentum this year and guys like Gordon and Cameron establish themselves as Pro Bowl type performers, it's going to be a great situation for a rookie QB like what Wilson had in Seattle ... great defense, established performers on offense.

Not a big fan of trading a lot of picks to move up for a Qb. I agree take a guy you like and build depth.

Jags don't have Glennon. Bucs do.
Jags will certainly go with Mariota or Bridgewater. My guess is Mariota, actually.
I'm just not overly thrilled with this group of QB's. Mariota may have the highest upside because of his physical gifts, but he has yet to be put under any sort of pressure and that bothers me (and everyone else not named Shep).
Honestly, the best QB in this draft may not even go in the first round. There's nobody head and shoulders above anyone else in terms of being an NFL ready QB.
I wouldn't feel bad if we didn't take a QB with our first pick.
-
What if...
...they traded one of this year's firsts for a first and something next year? If Mariota stays in college, with him and Winston, the 2015 QB class might be more appealing to them.
