Costco Labels Bible as Fiction

  • Used to manage bookstores in Columbus...

We had just rearranged the layout of the store and literally had every book off the shelves moving them around, total overhaul...

Next day a well-dressed fellow comes up to me dead serious and asks to show me something on the shelves. "Ok, lead on," I say.

He takes me down an aisle and points to The Diary of Anne Frank. I say, "yes, I'm familiar with it." Then he points to the sign for the section it was in..... "FICTION".

I chuckle and say "That ain't right, I learned that in 8th grade" and retrieve the book from the shelf and head toward NONFICTION or BIOGRAPHY, when he stops me again and asks me if I am aware that there are people who are trying to discredit The Diary of Anne Frank and say that it is a work of fiction and that the holocaust never happened and demands to know if this is part of that. Again, he is totally serious and a little mad, you can tell.

I apologized and admitted that we had just rearranged and that it was embarrassing to manage clerks who obviously didn't know the difference. Seriously, if you asked these clerks to box some books for you they would find the hugest box in the store and load it with 250 pounds of books that no one else could even push let alone lift. They just weren't critical or practical thinkers, yet neither were they neo-nazis...just ignorant and a little lazy frankly. The guy was still miffed and unbelieving.

So, I have first-hand experience of people screwing this type of thing up by accident and others getting mortally offended by it. Yet, as the manager, it was on me to check their work and right any "wrongs". Maybe CostCo would have found the misplaced Bibles eventually, maybe their placement in FICTION was just so idiotic that no one thought to look for them there. In my stores, they could always be found under RELIGION.

What I doubt is that CostCo was trying to alienate Christians, who are roughly 75% of ANY buying population. It's just bad business IMHO. There are companies that wear their religion on their sleeves..just don't know that CostCo is one of them from my experience.

Talk about fun with books, I managed stores during the OJ trial and his "I Want to Tell You" book, that book got more people up in arms and angry than this Bible controversy...

Then there was the time the mob (as in Goodfellas) in Columbus wanted to make me the Porn King of Dublin, Ohio. But that is another story...

Anyway logic, just about every one of our laws is based on someone's morality. Just because you might not like the idea that Christianity might be one of those sets of morality doesn't mean its not widespread. If you're an atheist I assume you are an Obama supporter and he, and his party, has referenced Christianity in terms of our responsibility to tax the rich and give more to what he calls the poor.I'm not opposing the idea of helping the poor, exactly, just pointing out that's a huge part of American society and based upon Christianity. Or the Gospel according to Mickey whichever you prefer.

    WSS

Most religions have a pretty similar 'core' of morality - no killing, stealing is bad etc. It turns out that most people have those core morals as well. Just because the law coincides with a lot of christian morality doesn't mean it's based on it, in America at least - wasn't one of the founding principals about separation of church and state? That the USA should be a secular country with freedom of religion? If so, basing the laws on the morality of the bible seems a bit hypocritical. That being said, I dare say most lawmakers in America would identify themselves as Christian which will of course influence their morality.

Yeah, almost all of the Enlightenment-influenced Founding Fathers were either deist or atheist.

"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity."

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

β€œThis would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it.”

    - John Adams

Being no bigot myself, I am disposed to indulge the professors of Christianity in the church that road to heaven which to them shall seem the most direct, plainest, easiest and least liable to exception.

    - George Washington

The Puritans who founded America left Britain to escape religious persecution from the Church of England.

no other reason than your hard core atheist demographic usually trend liberal. I doubt you find many fundamentalist Christians within the ACLU. I don't think it's a stretch to imagin that.

a couple of my go to examples are as follows:. The upstate New York Fire Department that was sued by the ACLU for having a Christmas tree at the firehouse. Some asshole called and filed suit because he could see it through the window and it offended him. Example: number 2 big expensive court battle near here in Stow Ohio because some jerk off decided he was offended that the seal of the city had a book on it that he assumed was the Bible. Since we hear stories similar to that nearly every day around this time of the season it's not a big leap to assume that some people are anti Christian and Christmas. It's these kind of ridiculous actions that make Christians and non-christians, like myself, I think that the atheist and ACLU are largely a bunch of dicks.

I can definitely see your point. I fall in the "leave me the fuck alone and I will do the same for you" camp on just about everything. I know there are a lot of atheists who make it their life goal to rid the world of religion, not taking into account that they are being tyrannical dickheads. However, I think the stories pick up around Christmas time because it sells better. Around July 4th we get inundated with stories about home owners associations bitching about U.S. flags that are "too large" in their communities. Why? Because it is near a patriotic holiday and the story will cause an uproar.

The ACLU generally can eat a dick. I am very pro-gun (CCW instructor) with tax stamp goodies. The ACLU does not consider the right to bear arms a civil liberty so they can piss up a rope.

    I tend to agree...

  • Well the War on Christmas stories are going to naturally come up more around, well, Christmas. That's when everybody's out suing everybody about nativity scenes and so forth. I don't have a CCW but I keep thinking of taking the course. Okay, I agree. You're a CCW instructor? COOL ! I have my license, since you're new. But I think Woody won't be happy

    that you're here, now.

Yeah, more and more folks are becoming that "Leave me the f alone, and I'll leave you alone". Which is weird, that

there are groups and gov agencies who are going to the courts to try to enforce their control on everybody else.

You must recognize gay marriages, and bake them a cake, for example. You must pay Obamaocare taxes

and fines, one way, or the other, and lose your insurance and you can't really keep it and your doctor and all like

they lied that you could. And Columbia gas, in Ohio, is suing a lot of famers, somewhere around 2000 acres,

for the rights to drill on their property...BY EMMINENT DOMAIN., after they wouldn't sign contracts with them.

The attitudes against owning guns, and all. Even trucks and SUV's that libs used to rail on, until that

ploy fell flat. It never ends. Some want licenses to drive farm equipment... ON THEIR OWN Land. And, on

our farm, at least here in Ohio, you cannot ride your ATV on your own farm with your loaded gun, concealed, or not,

without a CCW license. That, I don't mind. And I don't mind having to get a CCW. But really, it never ends.

Freedom for all, smaller gov, stop the runaway fed deficit...

They just want to equally be left alone to love and shag whoever they want, what happens between consenting adults is basically fine. • Law abiding gun owners should not be penalised for the actions of idiots with guns. Punishing the many for the mistakes of the few is never a good solution. What I personally would like to see, however, is a society in which people don't feel the need to sleep with a gun by their bed. Once we reach that point, gun control will be moot, since it would only be used for recreational purposes and as such could be kept safely at a place for said recreation.

Or is that just crazy talk?

I think government should be out of the marriage business all together. It is a religious ceremony. Let everyone who is of consenting age be able to choose to join in a legally binding union. If they choose to have a religious ceremony to celebrate the occasion than so be it.

Well that all depends on your interpretation of marriage. Marriage in itself is a legal contract binding two parties together, which can be celebrated with a ceremony, religious or otherwise. Nobody should be forcing religious institutions to allow gay people to be married therein, that would just be PC nonsense.

Crazy talk, Chris... there will always be those who will assault/murder/rape/pillage. Always hsa been. And folks

should be allowed to keep their guns in any society, to be responsible for their own safety. The police just can't

be there in three minutes, as some murderer breaks into your house and comes after you. It's reality. But more

than anything else, the idea that Americans' guns should be kept safely somewhere? Now, come on. When I killed

a big coyote that apparently kept coming back, and stalking our field, within 20' of my Wifie on our tractor...

I'm supposed to go downtown to some "safe" place, and fill out some paperwork, pay some stupid fee, and

wait three days to get my "recreational" gun back, to protect her? Naw. Guns are a great thing, and a bad thing,

depending on whose hands they are in. Same thing for cars and knives, and m-80's, and gasoline, and candlesticks,

    baseball bats.....

Same thing for being in our woods during deer season, and some nutjob was screaming at me from 50' feet away, because we

don't allow hunting on our beautiful property...(we have the ancient orchard and huge oaks, and our 2 3 acre wetlands)..

near the border of our property, that he was going to shoot a deer right next to my head. I was just sitting out there, and only got up, and he saw me,

just before dark. That's reality. And I have my ccw license on the advice of the game warden, and sheriff deputy.

  • I don't think its religious in nature at all, hence the outrage. It is, of course, a set of legal restrictions requirements penalties and perks.

In the light of the strict legal translation and original intent the institution has officially outlived its usefulness.

Not that I necessarily celebrate that particular, uh, improvement in society but it is what it is.
