Mel Kiper NFL Mock 1.0

The Browns Board

  • If this is even close to realistic (other than Hyde which is not) then I am convincing Minnesota they need to trade up from 8 to 4 to get their guy. I take their 2nd round pick and the remaining QB between Bridgewater and Bortles. Unless of course Watkins is still on the board in which case I take him and worry about QB somewhere in my next 3 picks.

  • NFL Network have posted 2 drafts today

  • i like hyde, but come on. if we are going to take a first round RB (and we shouldnt) we should take tre mason. if hyde is availabe in the 3rd round then scoop him up

Agreed (sort of). RB's are a dime a dozen. You don't use a late first round pick on one. Assuming the QB position is addressed, use it on the best available WR, pass rusher, DB, etc. Not a RB.

  • not another first round RB...

Hydes explosiveness off the handoff is a big question mark, if hes available in 2nd, take him, not 1

Where I agree with never ever ever drafting a running back in the 1st round. I have to disagree with the explosive comment. Getting the handoff out of the pistol and the spread is totally wasted one a north and south bruiser like Hyde.

With that being said Hyde's accomplishments are even that more impressive. He did what he did in an offense not suited to him. Hell he's the first RB to have 1K yrds for Urban and a good chance he will be the last.

Biased opinions aside I do want the Browns to get Hyde in the upcoming draft. First 3rd round pick they have would be the spot to take him. I would even move back into the ladder part of the 2nd round to get him. The Browns need a runner like him ALMOST as much as any position on the team. This kid would be exciting in a traditional I formation or basic NFL power running play with the intangibles to pass catch and size to block. He will be the best rb, FA or rookie, between the tackles. THE POINT OF ATTACK. And what a great stable of RBs to have. Hyde-power/every down. Lewis-Scat/change of pace/3rd down/up tempo. Edwin Baker- A guy that is very servicable and may push Obie but more likely to beat him straight up for 3rd rb. PROBLEM SOLVED JIMMY.

  • I will LMAO if the Texans insist on taking Manziel #1 overall, It will mean the FO truly didn't know what they were doing firing Chud.

    exactly.

not only that that they had no plan moving forward. i personally didn't like the chud hiring, BUT one year and you're done must put chills down the back of anyone of greatness to decide to take the browns HC job unless they are as desperate as this FO is now.

someone with some balls needs to be hired under their conditions and signedoff by haslam, as in they have a voice in the drafting and hiring of staff.

that's why i say talk to rob ryan cuz he don't give a fuck. cut my hair....no. trade up to get manziel....no. bortles will land to us @4 then get us D upgrades at #2 corner and lb help. a good if not great RB and a WR and someone to take over on the right side of the OL. play your ball and if no one likes it they can kiss his ass or fire him again under a one and done contract and we will be untouchable by anybody worth their weight as another prospective HC.

    +1

I think he's a perfect fit for this disorganized FO. In the AFC North, you need a crazy mofo running the show.

I like his defensive schemes, he tends to work with the talents in his roster than mold his players into his system.

  • Lol, it will be simultaneously hilarious and unbelievably sad if the Browns take a RB at #26 like this Kiper mock shows. After all of the talk on how genius the Richardson trade was and on how RBs are not worth 1st round picks anyway, if the Browns take another RB that doesn't work out with the #26, anyone who insisted that this was a great trade should never be allowed to speak about football again. It's not that a pick COULDN'T turn out to be a great player, it's that you don't KNOW that it will; I've said it all along.

I'd rather have any of the top RBs at #26 than TR anyway. TR is a bust.

I'm personally hoping Dennard from MSU will fall to 26, but I'm not optimistic he will.

  • Hahahaha, I love the optimism. You know that a player only becomes a bust AFTER being picked early and then not producing, right?

Well I would take 2 running backs on our roster over TR.

Neither cost us a draft pick. Sure, #26 could be a bust but so is TR. At least we get a second try.

  • But the second try was just a waste of time if the RB picked there doesn't produce. In fact, if the RB picked there doesn't break some Browns rookie rushing records, it's a downgrade.

People often mistake this. I'm not saying that Richardson was good or that this trade can't or won't work out in the Browns' favor. The only thing I ever try to point out in this discussion is that there is the possibility that whatever/whomever is picked with that pick MAY not prove to be more helpful to the Browns than Richardson was. So, before we declare it a "good trade" or "genius move", let's wait and see how it turns out. We know what we had, now let's wait and see what we get.

  • I think Bortles v Bridgewater could come down to testing and combines. I would want to get into their heads and compare that.

I agree. In addition that decision will be influenced by the coach / OC they bring in and the type of offense they run.

Hyde in the first round is insane. There are a couple at least I would take over him but most of them should be abvailable in the 2nd and even 3rd round.

  • Still too early for mocks.

I disagree with him about manziel but whatev.

I'd like to get Dennard from msu somehow tho.

we would have to take dennard with the 4 pick or forget about getting him. He will be gone before 26.

OK... but you have to admit the odds are in our favor...

  • I've figured it out. Take Watkins at 4. Get Derek Carr, even if you have to slightly trade up to do it. Take Seastrunk in the second round, he's an explosive runner. Take Dixon, S in the third and then take Hyde to play FB/HB. Golden.

  • Depends on how you look at it, I guess. If we're going by "all first round picks ever picked", then yeah, a lot of guys end up contributing. If we're going by recent Browns first round picks... now the odds are a little slimmer.

I mean, I'm sure the colts would happily take the 26 pick back for TR. They'd probably include their 2nd too.

TR is one of those recent browns picks you describe. My bet is we go for a WR at 26, maybe a guard anyway. Mel Kipper is crazy for thinking we go rb at 26 anyway.

  • Right, and that was my original point. Taking a RB at #26 is kind of inviting disaster now. No one would happier than me if the Browns took some player that ended up contributing at literally ANY position. I completely hope that they do. I just think that people tend to look at the words "[future] first round pick" and think "we're going to get a great player with that!" And that is entirely possible. Maybe it is even probable. But it is not guaranteed. A future first round pick has just as much chance of ending in a bust as a past first round pick did.

  • I would love it if Carlos Hyde turned out to be Adrian Peterson and we got him at the bottom of the first round.

But I don't think anyone is comparing him to a second coming of jim brown. I wouldn't mind having Johnny Manziel at 4 since I believe is upside could be spectacular. But more often than not Heisman quarterbacks fail.
