Free Agent QBs

The Browns Board
30 17 1.1k
  • With this talk of trading or ditching BW3, and no one thinking that Jason Campbell has a future here, the Browns would be down to Hoyer, and whoever they draft. But we have learned: that is not good enough. Following. is a link to the list of Free Agent QBs. If we do dump Weeden and Campbell, they have to pick up some kind of veteran to be in the QB.

    http://www.kffl.com/static/nfl/features/freeagents/fa.php?y=2014

    Interesting names:

    A. Ex-Browns: Anderson, Quinn, McCoy, Seneca Wallace, Luke McCown

    .........probably no fit there.

    Josh Freeman

    Matt Flynn

    Matt Cassell

    Anyone here float your boat?

  • No.

  • This doesn't float my boat, but the name I've heard floated around since the Shanahan hire is Rex Grossman as a third string player coach who can help teach Shanahan's system.

  • No.

By that can I imply that you would still rather see either Campbell or Weeden here as a backup than any one of these guys?

  • This SI article says that this year's crop of FA QBs is crapola:

    http://fansided.com/2014/01/14/2014-free-agent-quarterback-class-beyond-thin/#!vsJ8O

And I would tend to absolutely agree. They say get your QB from the draft.

(But, also, in my opinion, this is a relatively weed QB draft class)

  • I'd be cool with Hoyer/Rookie/Campbell or maybe even a later/UDFA like Guiton to be 3rd string.

Flynn/Cassel may be decent backups but I don't think we need either.

  • Campbell proved how much he sucked and why he has always been a backup. Hoyer is unproven and coming off a serious injury. 2 wins don't mean he is the next Tom Brady. We need a 1st round QB.

  • I like Josh Freeman, convinced there's a good QB in there somewhere

  • I like Freeman. His crap stint in Minnesota should drop the price by a lot, and he's young, fairly mobile, and a strong arm.

Bortles at #4, Freeman as a backup.

I wouldn't mind that at all.

  • I like Sexy Rexy as a third string/fight for roster spot option, but that's about it. Basically do what Washington did last year with he and Pat White. Wasn't really any doubt that Rex would be the third stringer, but if he could severely beat, or the other player just did exceptionally well, you could keep four or just the other guy instead.

I think going into the preseason with 1st Rounder Rookie/Hoyer/Rex/7th-UDFA Rookie is very intriguing to me. Now I probably wouldnt keep all four, but I wouldn't be mad cutting Rex or a 7th if it down to that decision.

I'm saying none of them float my boat for our purposes.

Josh McCown is an upgrade over Campbell/Weeden for sure, but we aren't going to pay for him with Hoyer on the roster and the inevitable drafting of a QB.

Bridgewater/Manziel with Hoyer and Tanney is fine with me ... we don't need any of these guys.

Cambell and Weeden are as good as gone, and we don't need any of these other guys.

    Rookie + Hoyer + Tanney

  • You don't have to FORCE feed yourself a QB just because you need a QB.

Seattle did it with Defense FIRST.

    A Power running game.

Then finished it off with Wilson.

    4 year process.

Oh, OK, I guess I discounted the Tanney factor altogether considering Tanney is a raw as any rookie we are likely to pick up.

I personally may not be as comfortable with having Tanney as a "veteran" backup. He is just such an unknown quantity.

Farmer had him in KC and brought him in, so I'm sure he gets a shot.

If they want to bring in Grossman, I can live with that, but if we are going to keep a third QB I prefer to develop a prospect than bring in a retread.

  • As mentioned in another thread, Farmer mentioned he may trade out some picks to next years Draft, and now this :

Alex Whiteman ‏@AlexWhitemanFB 13m #Browns owner Ray Farmer was the highest on Oregon QB coming in. Look for Cleveland to target him heavily next year.

We may not take a QB this year if Farmer's looking for Marietta.

    Also :

Alex Whiteman ‏@AlexWhitemanFB 16m Prediction: Browns take lower round quarterback (Tom Savage, Tajh Boyd) as a one-year option to start. Wait until Mariota next year.

  • I don't see us getting Mariota without a big trade or if we suck.

If he was in this class he'd be #1 overall IMO.

I agree Mariota is going to be a high pick.

I believe the thinking/trend is that a 2014 #4 ~ 2015 #3 (based on last year trades), so with that in mind, I'm not sure what the FO has in mind but they could build up quite a bit of ammo if need be.

  • Campbell proved how much he sucked and why he has always been a backup. Hoyer is unproven and coming off a serious injury. 2 wins don't mean he is the next Tom Brady. We need a 1st round QB.

What we need is a good NFL quarterback. That does not mean we are obligated to overdraft one in the first round.

And what do you consider overdrafting? If we have Bridgewater at 8 overall and take him 4th, is that overdrafting? Or reaching?

That's all well and good, except it's not exactly the case.

Sherman was drafted in 2011. Irvin was drafted in 2012. Wagner was drafted in 2012. Wright was drafted in 2012.

Seattle's defense finished in the bottom half of the league in the first 2 of those 4 seasons.

They didn't build defense first. They just built the team. They didn't reach for players solely because of media hype (Irvin is questionable in that regard), they took the ones they thought fit their system.

There's no single right way to build a championship team. Emulating others success may not work here. All you can do is build a team with the players you think will succeed, regardless of what the analysts say about their draft position.
