    SAVAGE TRASHING LERNER IN TAMPA?

Posted by Mike Florio on January 28, 2009, 11:08 p.m.

There was a buzz in Radio Row on Wednesday regarding the presence in Tampa of former Browns G.M. Phil Savage.

More specifically, there are rumors that Savage is bad-mouthing the man who fired Savage, Browns owner Randy Lerner.

Lerner fired Savage not long after the Browns concluded a disappointing 4-12 season, which featured a string of embarrassments involving Savage, including a public spat with tight end Kellen Winslow and the badly misguided decision to send an e-mail to a fan including a profane message.

What do you know...lol...When i hit the thread, your info popped up and i never saw the first post.

    Weird .....I deleted.

  • From Toni Grossi's interview, Savage seemed to try really hard NOT to talk bad about anybody, even though Grossi was baiting him.

Very interesting that rumors are saying that Savage might be bashing Lerner. Trent Dilfer's little spat was directed primarily at Lerner as well.

  • It's good to get rid of the arrogant little twit. His trade of this year's third round pick was stupid.

After reading rumblings about front office problems. it's no wonder Lerner cleaned house...

  • That third round pick helped us net Shaun Rogers. I'd hardly call that stupid.

I thought the third rounder was part of the Rucker trade. That would explain why Dallas has our 3rd rounder...

Bodden and a 5th got us Rogers.

After a deal fell through that sent Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals for a third-round and fifth-round pick, the Lions rebounded by sending Rogers to Cleveland in exchange for a third-round choice and cornerback Leigh Bodden. Late Friday night, the Lions informed Rogers' agent, Kennard McGuire, that the trade with the Browns has been complete.

  • I thought it was the Rucker trade, which didn't make much of any sense.

Of course, if it was for Rodgers, that is different.

He was still an arrogant little twit.

  • We traded away our '08 3rd Round pick & Leigh Bodden for Shaun Rogers. Our '09 3rd Round pick was traded away in order to draft Martin Rucker.

  • The Rucker trade was almost a necessity.

We had some injuries at TE and without a negotiating chip K2 would have had us bent over a barrel with no lube when it came to a holdout and contract negotiation. Rucker gave us the leverage to have Kellen come to camp and keep his contract.

Plus Rucker is another K2 type TE and with the wear to Kellen's knees we're going to need a replacement there anyways, so it wasn't a bad move because it was going to fill a future need and keep us from the negotiating table.

Rucker was a good move. K2 was chirping all last winter about a new contract. He worked out away from the team in miami. He asked to be traded before the trading deadline this year even before the whole staph thing. I think him and Savage have been butting heds for a long while. Rucker was suppose to be K2's wakeup call, but RAC never played him so we don't know if Rucker can play or not.

Yes, in theory drafting a TE was a very good move, for the reasons you cited.

But I need to see it in practice. To see if the decision of who to draft was as good a decision as what to draft, if you get my drift.

It wasn't that Phil was completely incompetent, it was that he wasn't good enough to be as big of an asshole that he was. If your going to be an ass like that and piss off your star TE and send profane emails to fans then you better have your team in the super bowl year in and year out, 4-12 got him shit canned.

I think that sums it up. If you know you've been fired for behaving like an ass, why WOULD you want to talk about it? The fact that he can't find a diplomatic and self-effacing way to talk about it also demonstrates the same shortcomings that caused his other embarrassments. Maybe there was an ugly scene. I don't really care. The housecleaning that Randy Lerner did is one of the things that made sense to me.

  • But I wasn't dissing Rucker himself... the Browns hardly used him. They should have grown some nads and traded for Rucker, and PLAYED HIM, then

traded Winslow to the Eagles or whoever...

Sounds like Savage made the trade, and Crennel had no plans to play him.

More "not on the same page" ? He was on the field long enough to catch two passes,

and apparently, be a decoy. Either that, or DA wouldn't throw him the ball...

Both passes were for a first down.

Instead, they traded for Rucker and he made, for not playing much, zilch impact on the offense:

    Yds TD

    Rucker 17

    League Average 224

    League Leader 1058

Year Team ..... G Rec Yds Y/G Avg Lng YAC 1stD TD

    2008 Cleveland 5 2 17 3.4 8.5 9 0.5 2 0

  • Yeah, Romeo had the nasty habit of letting guys just SIT even if the Vets stunk it up so bad it was disgraceful.

You think it might have been to spit in Savage's face after his staff got thrown under the bus by him?

  • It was time for a change... but lets not forget Phil made some huge moves for this team. He got Frye out of here... he's the reason we have Quinn, Thomas, Wimbley, Rogers, Williams, Lewis, K2, Edwards. Think about it... we had Suggs and Green in the backfield previously. Yuck!!

He brought in Frye that was his personal choice. Quinn has proven nothing. Thomas was not worth the number three pick in the draft albeit he is good. Wimbley is average and one dimensional and has been exposed and his performance is way less than the 11 pick in the draft. Rogers will be gone in three years and he gave a solid CB and third rounder for him no great shakes there. Jamal Lewis is washed up caput. K2 was not brought in by Sewage he was brought in by Butch. Edwards was the 3 pick in the draft and has underachieved the three pick should perennial all pro. He kept Suggs and Green and paid a truckload to both proclaiming to emerge big time. He passed on Adrian Peterson, Willie Parker, and several other RB's to be named later to keep those stiffs.

He also brought in Andruzzi, Baxter, Shaffer, Washington, McGinest at way more money than their empty or half full tanks were worth.

He paid Cutch and Roye three times their worth

I got twenty five other blunders that Sewage made. He stank from the beginning by signing Dilfer and letting Henry go and compounded itazn right up to the end. GOOD RIDDANCE 🙄

Randy Lerner got Frye out of here...not Phil!

  • There was NO WAY IN HELL Henry was coming back here.

He flat out stated Butch screwed him over and he would take less money elsewhere as to not come back.

I can in no way, shape or form blame that one on Phil no matter how much I'd like to.

Baxter was a great pickup, just like LCB. Who knew BOTH would blow out their knees? That was fluke luck, again, can't blame Phil for that one.

Fisk was a waste, yes, and if Romeo and Phil had half a brain in the first place we would have ran the 4-3 for one season while we drafted guys to fit the 3-4 so we didn't overload on stopgap FAs, but we wanted a change and we wanted it NOW and we got what we were asking for now didn't we?
