This weeks edition of Tony Grossi's mock draft (which annoyingly stops at #26) has the Browns picking up Greg Robinson at #4 (with brownsboard favorites Sammy Watkins and Khalil Mack still on the board).

At #26 he has them picking up Ryan Shazier (in previous installments he has mentioned him playing as an uber athletic inside linebacker).

    What does everyone think?

A link to the mock can be found at http://espncleveland.com/common/more.php?m=49&action=blog&r=17&post_id=30001

Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts,

    CLEinCHI

Is this the same Tony Grossi that Gave the Steelers an "F" draft grade for 2004, drafting Ben Roethlisberger and calling him the next Tim Couch.

Is this the same Tony Grossi that said the Steelers would be lucky to finish 3rd in the AFC North and were in decline, when they were AFC North Champions, AFC Champions and were a drive away from winning the Super Bowl?

Is this the same Tony Grossi who said the Steelers were in Decline because Dan Rooney was no longer around, taking the job of Ambassador to Ireland in 2009, when he turned over the running of the franchise to his son in 2002 --- a sportswriter who doesn't even know who the owners of the division opponents are?

Is this the same Tony Grossi who was fired and stripped of his Hall of Fame vote?

Go ahead and listen to him, he just tells you what you wish was true, despite the fact he is a misinformed idiot.

No, it isn't because this Tony Grossi didn't say any of those things......and the Tony Grossi we know still is the Cleveland rep for the HOF voting.

So, I guess we know who the misinformed idiot is.

  • I'm jumping in this late, but Robinson/Shazier would be solid, especially if Houston goes QB with th first pick (though I think they hope to go Clowney/Garoppolo). Robinson should (barring any serious injuries) be a franchise OT for us, right or left side, and I just offered a bet to a buddy, who is also a Browns fan, on the success of Shazier. I think thrown on the inside, he has a hall of fame career. That should back up my reasoning behind those two, and I'd take it all day, even if it meant not getting a QB rated higher than McCarron.

  • no on shazier. I thought he got outmuscled way too much at OH. He's more of a 4-3 OLB than a 3-4 ILB. He obviously has the athleticism to bring himself up to 34 ILB but he ain't there now. I'd rather take Mosley if he's there or the LB'ers from Wisconsin and Michigan St. Don't remember their names right now.

The thing is, if Yankey is the guy you want, then you take him because he won't be there the next go around. First, it wouldn't be such a reach it would be considered gross. Saying a guy would have been there 10 picks later is a bit foolish.

I had a baseball draft last night and drafted 3rd....that is great except you kind of get upside down on the way back...at one point after the 3rd round, it was like a punted a round and starting selecting the players I wanted a round early. The only point in that is that it is OK if the Browns select a guy who is rated at the top of round 2 and take him at the bottom of round 1.

Agree... nothing obscene with drafting Yankey at 26... also nothing obscene with drafting someone else there at 26 and spending a 3rd rounder to move our #35 up a bit to take Yankey.

Also agree that the later the round, the broader the range is of acceptable pick(s) spent for any given player.

It all depends on your board and your estimate of other teams' intent... and the latter is what makes the draft so fascinating.

Remember when Reiff and DeCastro were both supposed to go in the top 15? They both ended up being available when the Browns chose to go with Weeden at 22.

Remember it well... voice just recovered from yelling "IDIOTS!" at the TV in 2012...

He's more athletic than Patrick Willis was coming out of college and is only 5 lbs lighter. I mentioned in another thread that he could use up to 20 lbs, but in reality, 5-10 would do him just fine. At his size, I think he did very well at OSU playing a position he was undersized for. Great tackler, who rarely misses. Mosley will be a better candidate for his first year and MAYBE his second year, but once aquainted with the position, I'd put my money on Shazier as the guy whom would most impact our D. Plus, Mosley will likely be gone at 26.

While I still think Mack could end up being the best ILB to come out for a couple years, as far as ILB'ers go I'd take Mosley/Borland/Bulloch over Shazier.

There were reports from an OSU fan Shazier got dinged a lot. Comments?

not enough to where it was a problem. Im more worried about hom shedding blocks, especially if we plan on drafting him for MLB.
  • Quote button not popping up...happens here and there.

Horta - no major injuries, no where near the concern that comes with Mosley.

Mike - I made the Willis comparison. Not to compare the vet Willis to the rockie Shazier, but to compare the frame (Willis, right now is 6"1 1/8" - 240, Shazier is 6"1" - 237). He's stonger than Willis coming out of college (based solely on the bench press, Willis 22reps, Shazier 25reps), is highly coachable, can play a major role in a D that has different looks, took on and won plenty of battles at the line (many plays where he exploded right through - see Wisconsin for example) and gets the praise for his ability to stuff rushing holes.

I wouldn't be disappointed if we passed on him, but would love it more if we grabbed him. I had to drop my own bias when looking at him...I'm and OSU fan, a natural homer, and since have concluded that he's going to have the best career at ILB out of everyone in the draft. Just my opinion. He may not be that guy day one, but day one, year two, his sophomore season, I see him playing like a top 10 pick.

  • I like it. It fully applies. Bad thing is, I keep hearing buzz about him to the Packers before we pick. We shall see. Unless we were getting Gilbert (he's my clear cut top corner for man coverage), I'd acrafice a CB and pick one in the third or trade up to the second for one to take Shazier at 26 or 35.
