If you get good enough at every position, you can just put a monkey and a jugs machine behind the line and still expect success.

The problem is, you can't afford to pay 21 all-star contracts.

The Seahawks got lucky with Sherman. They got lucky-ish with Browner. They got lucky with Red Bryant (who is the main piece of that defense, if you're really paying attention). They got lucky with Malcolm Smith and K.J. Wright.

But, in 3-4 years, they're going to have to find a whole new group of those guys when their contracts come up and they want big time money. They're going to be in a constant state of rebuilding. That's not to say they don't have a stacked team and that building a strong defense isn't the way to do that. It's just going to be insanely tough to maintain.

Like the Steelers now. They're in the transition phase where the young talent they've drafted is going to replace the defensive icons of the past decade. However, that talent is hurt. Without BR, the Steelers could have very easily finished at the bottom of the AFC North with us.

    Getting a QB is paramount.

agree with almost everything. Where's the line between lucky drafting, and good coaching, scouting and scheming? Also, Earl Thomas is what makes that d tic, and ive been paying lots of attention.

Seattle honestly didn't get great until Wilson showed up, Same with Kaepernick in SF.

The Steelers are awful with Ben, The Colts were 1-15 without Manning.

I understand it's a team sport but QB is most important.

and Dilfer, Johnson, Rypien,Williams, Hostetler all won super bowls..FYI SF went to NFC championship with Alex smith so they were "great" before Colin. Wilson is far from a great QB he has a great running game and good defense and they don't ask him to do to much. Look at the Ratbirds they won SB with Flacco, lose Boldin and some defense pieces and they look awful. Pats* won 11 games w/o Brady. Great teams win SB not Great QBs.. Drafting a QB to just draft a QB lands you Weeden, McCoy, Couch, Ponder, Gabbert, Locker,Leaf, Leinart..

The Seahawks didn't start doing shit until Russell Wilson got there.

Fuck the defense for now, GET A fucking QB for once

Hahaha, you think what I said was dumb? I'll give you real dumb.

LOL, I occasionally venture over to the other place for fun & games. Shep's got a bigger man-crush on Man-ziel than PG does on Carr. Muuuuuuussssttttt draft a qb @#4, or trade up to get one, or the world is going to end. 🙂 MHO is Shep would be content for the Browns to draft a qb in the first round every year until they do hit on one.

PS, I almost caught up with that elusive SOB at the KC game, and actually did get to talk to him on the phone. I'll roll out the Red Carpet invite for him when the Brits show up in Cleveland.

That is the multimillion dollar, multi year question- is one of the 2014 qb class the real deal, or one of the above busts. If the Browns don't love one of the top 3, looks like they'll be perfectly content to wait until the second, or lower round(s). Nothing sets a franchise back farther than taking a qb high in the first round and finding out he sucks.

              @mike-h said:

that is all true, if you believe your narrative that all if these QBs will be busts.

Nope Mike one of them is going to turn out pretty good- the question is which one? And if we have to wait until next year to take a qb and wing it with Hoyer and a FA vet, well it won't upset me too much. But I agree- the Browns will definitely draft a qb this year- what round they do is open to speculation.

what's funny about that? to some team he'll be their first choice.

target the players and pick them, especially if you have the picks to move up.

sorta like we did when we drafted TR and reached for weedon.

now that was hilarious. still hurting us after 3 years when we could have picked the right QB but fags fell in love with howdy doody.

Well, imho, the qb should be the final piece of the puzzle.

It's like chess. Archie Manning went to a young team with little talent.

He got the hell beaten out of him.

The bigger question now, is, will the Browns get the right guy, to step in,

now that they are far more a complete football team across the board, especially

                  after this FA and draft?

It would be good to get the right guy, but running with media hype and stats, you can

end up drafting the wrong guy. Jamarcus Russel? Ryan Leaf ?

The Patriots didn't get to the SP, and they have old Tom Brady. It IS a team game.

Sure, that qb that has it all, to be the guy, is harder to find than most positions. It's the hardest

job mentally. But if Shep were here talking about how we MUST draft one at 4, or trade up...

I'd be arguing that Seattle found their guy in the freakin third round, and they are

                  SB champs.

It isn't that easy. But, most of us want the Browns to just get their guy. Farmer is the new deal,

the right choice for GM. His outlook on the draft is impressive - he and Pettine will be drafting the right guys.

Whoever they draft, I'm great with it, and it will be the right choices, as best anybody in the NFL could make

                  for the Browns.

Meanwhile, imho, I'm really not sold on Manziel. Or Mettenberger. Or Bridgewater. Or Carr, mostly thanks to Poetic......

I like Bortles. And Savage and Brett Smith, Wyoming later on, 4th/5th round or so, if they are still around.

My guess is, if Bortles is gone, the Browns will not draft a qb at 4.

This draft is crazy. Farmer said in the past, that he looks at character, work ethic, etc, and if they don't see it,

they don't look any further. That's a paraphrase.

When somebody compares qb's stats, like Shep used to, well, what that really is, is a comparison of

offenses. Systems, offensive lines, wr's, TE's, running backs, and defenses those two offenses played against.

Colt McCoy had great stats. Weeden. Jamarcus. etc. But the step up to the pro game requires seeing the field

on the higher level. Apparently, that isn't a common trait for a lot of highly media hyped qb's that have come

out of college, and into the draft.

Stats are just a small piece of the puzzle. This draft is all up in the air. There will be big surprises.

Pettine is right on, and there in no qb in the draft this year that is better than hoyer. He already said there going to get the best people at there positions not just going to fill a position. So I hope this means he is going to get Sammy or Mack with the first pick. Johnny football is a bum.

First off Johnny is not going to run around and make plays, everyone is as fast or faster. Two he dose not have to accuracy to make plays he will be facing nfl cb. Three he's never played in cold windy weather. McCoy found out that. And four we are trying to change the culture in Cleveland we don't need a little baby bitch with a big head coming in there thinking his shit don't stink. And he's not going to come in there in the first year and play better than hoyer. If it was me I would pass on him and any other qb till at least the fourth round and wait till next year to get Winston if he continues to progress. Get the best pieces you can now. That's how you win not by getting the so called next big thing. Denver went out and got manning howed that turn out defense and a run game win.

if we pick manziel there are going to be a group of people that come out of their bunkers to cheer the american way. hell we might even shoot off some rockets towards russia we'll feel so confident.

WalterWhite...you dumb ass. Johnny's over inflated confidence is why he won't make it in the NFL. Have you actually watched film of him throwing the ball? His scripted pro day doesn't count (though that was tits). He throws into coverage and only gets bailed out because of shit DBs and Mike Evans pulling the ball out of the black hole it's continually thrown into.

Don't compare Manziel to Wilson. Size is your only grounds for comparison. Wilson's decision making on and off the field are in a different universe when compared to Manziel. Jackpot Johnny is more similar to Tebow than Wilson.

Did you honestly compareManziel to Rodgers? Manziel will never throw the ball like that....ever.

Yards are overrated. Case and point, Timmy Chang. I want a pro caliber arm and good decision making on the field. He'll be more injury prone that Mike Vick running like her does and will have DBs chomping at the bit, waiting for him to fling one their way. Jackpot Johnny throws the ball up, receiver saves his ass, Johnny yells "JACKPOT!!!," and somebody in thebdraft comes out "looking like a donkey."

Rodgers amy have endorsed him, but what was his first and primary reason? He didn't apologize for being a bigity bitch. Then he followed that was what I would expect to see on a generic QB resume...he can make plays, uhhh play football...he's confident. I would have given it credit if he said Jackpot Johnny can make NFL caliber throws.

Yes, I watched him pass for more yards, yards per average, completion %, and TD's than ANYONE in the SEC.

I watched him throw for more yards than Bortles, Bridgewater, Winston, Boyd, Mariota, Morris, Mettenberger, McCarron, and Murray.

I watched him have the 2nd highest QB completion of all QB's next to Teddy Bridgwater.

I watched him shred apart Alabama in the air and on foot 2 years in a row in epic epic battles.

I've seen his arm and what he can do bro

Yeah, and I saw Colt McCoy have a 170 qbr, and pass for a shit ton of yards in college too. Big whoop. So how's Colt doing in the pros? BTW, Colt consistently made better decisions than JF too. Chucking it up into quadruple coverage off balance on your back foot and hoping Evans is going to answer your prayer won't cut it in the NFL.

Edit: Know what I see out of JF? A more mobile version of Colt with a slightly stronger arm. Um plenty of pro scouts question if his game as currently constituted translates to the NFL. Does not go through his progressions, and takes off running far too often when his primary receiver isn't open. Care to refute that?

Can anyone really say these superbowl teams have a great QB?

                                    Seattle Seahawks

                                    NYG

                                    Baltimore Ravens

None of these 3 teams have GREAT QB, but they had GREAT defense.

QB is important, but Pettine is right...too much emphasis is put on the QB when it's a team sport.

Too early to say for sure whether or not Russell Wilson is great or not but he looks pretty damn good for his first 2 years. Eli would be in the top 10 for QB's in the league I would guess and you don't win two super bowls by accident.

The Ravens are the only team that truly won a super bowl in spite of their QB. Didn't they go like 4 games that season without scscoring a TD?
