Browns / Bills trade

  • They way I heard it, the Bills are finding a new owner since the old dude left, and they'll likely want their own FO. The current FO, therefore, wants to use this year as an audition for their next jobs, and wanted to put a better team on the field than they could have with their own pick.

that makes sense, but i am pulling for them to go 3-13 for 2014.

0-16. Don't wish them bad, but a year with Manuel and Watkins not playing would make me a happy boy. Then hopefully beat them in the SB in 2015.

Interesting vid... could feel the tension

Why draft another QB next year when Farmer already got his franchise QB? Next year he will be adding two blue chippers. I'd look at WR and a game-changing pass rusher.

The 2014 season will be the first full test of one or both of our 2 top QBs, whether either comes out of it as the "franchise" is not a certainty. But odds are at least one will show well enough to set aside any QB priority for at least a year.

What that frees us to do with our 3 top, 2015 picks is anybody's guess. WR seems a pretty safe choice, but knowing what we know now about the 2014 draft...

    @harry-buffalo said:

We would stick with Manziel for at least three years. That is why striking out on a franchise QB hurts franchises so much. You are stuck with terrible QB play for three years then one year of rookie QB play even if you draft the right guy the next time around.

I don't think you blindly stick with any QB for three years. Agree that you have to have a measure of patience, but you also have to see progress towards reaching the potential that prompted you give your QB the starting job.

As I have said before, I think you always have to be looking for your next QB. The only variable is the price you pay for him.

  • This was an A+ grade for the Browns any day. Look at the history of trading up... in most cases the team trading down ends up with advantage...

  • 5:22, Mike Brown sure found a job quick.

yessir. picks one and two next year, that is if these picks turn out to be the players the FO hoped they would when selecting them.

i have a neighbor who's a bills fan and he was with a big section of fans who think they got screwed and praised what we had done.

there'll be another watkins next year. might have a different set of numbers and measurables, but they'll be a top 5 just like this year and every year before it.

  • I probably would have accepted a 2nd next year instead of the first. But they should be excited too, they paid a top price but for top talent.

  • @walterwhite said:

What? You would have taken a 2nd instead of a 1st?

Before knowing the Gordon situation anyway, I really like the Gilbert pick though.

    fleeced

I've said it elsewhere. "Fleeced" only if Gilbert turns into the stud CB we think he will be, AND we don't draft another Brandon Weeden with that #1 next year. Too early to say.

Don't forget about Desir, he's pretty darn good too - CB shouldn't be an issue outside of Rookie growing pains.

Yep, sometimes a turd is a turd. Like Haslam saw with Chudzinski, sometimes there is no perceived room for improvement and its better to start over than keep continuity for the sake of continuity. I agree QBs aren't given enough time anymore, and that some QBs will eventually "click" if they don't as quick as others.... but it hasn't happened for CLE QBs. Everyone wanted to give Quinn, McCoy, Anderson, et al "more time," and they never amounted to anything outside Cleveland.

Wow an actual Mike H reply to one of my posts... Well here goes nothing...

I think as a rule coaches need more than one year... especially rookie ones. That said... would I now trade Pettine for Chud? No... Mike shows "grit" that Chud did not, but lack of grit alone was not a fireable offense.

You forgot Wheezy in your QB list... although his one-more-year crowd got pretty thin, pretty fast in year two. For the record I was never on board with he or Quinn. You should well be aware of the former, but will have to trust me on the latter.

Anderson: Following his "break-out year" I wanted to trade him... and Braylon Edwards. Houston area Browns fan accused me of heresy, but I believed that he was a one-read, one-season wonder, that Edwards had just been along for the ride and that their trade value would never be higher. I believe I had that one (or two) right...

McCoy: Guilty on that one. In retrospect he may have peaked in the 2010 Jets game we lost in OT. While I thought he was improving in 2011, whatever chance he had to be good may have ended with the Harrison hit in late that year. Regardless... to believe Wheezy was a more talented QB was ludicrous.

    Exactly why in the hell!?

By next season it will probably be a little more clear what the exact needs are.

I'll bet dollars to dog turds it won't be another first round QB.back...

HB I don't think I understood your response.

  • Well then I don't think for a second anybody in charge is thinking about it Mariota or Winston.

If they were they could have taken AJ McCarron.

Or announced they were sticking with Hoyer.

I don't think you draft Johnny football if you are thinking to next year's quarterback draft. Unless, of course, you are an idiot.

Slap the franchise tag on Cameron and draft a tight end next year at 15 or wherever we will pick.

Means that next years crop (at least 1st round crop) of pass rushers and pass catchers are supposed to be good. At least from what I have read.

  • i understand why the bills made the trade for watkins, but what i dont get is that they gave up a solid amount and they are more than one guy away from being a playoff contender.

They aren't far of if they aren't already going to be playing for a playoff spot. They are full of playmakers defensively. Spiller needs to stay healthy and they drafted manuel last season. If his maturation continues on a positive track they are going to be in the hunt.

A+? You don't know what you are going to have 100% with either of the first round guys. Gilbert is a very good man corner but he's a poor tackler and by a lot of accounts wasn't the best corner in the draft just the most athletic. What surprised me is why the browns traded out of the latter portion of the deepest draft in a decade to load up on picks in next years draft. Bottom line tho all the teams in the north had solid drafts.

  • The Browns said in their defense, the cb's aren't

used in run support like other defenses.

    You can coach tackling, anyways.

You can't coach athleticism. Gilbert is a good bit

    more fluid than Kyle fuller.

He's an amazing talent. Your sour grapes are duly noted.

Sour grapes? If the steelers were to draft a corner in round 1 I wanted fuller because our corners are asked to tackle. Dennard would have been my second choice and only behind fuller because he like gilbert is more of a man corner and the steelers run more zone. Mayock had gilbert ranked 3rd for a while because his unwillingness to tackle. I'm more than pleased with a 4.37 forty at inisde backer next to timmons but thanks. Manziel is gonna have a blast running for his life.

Edit: and manziel is a gamble. You gotta hope he's Russell Wilson but if hes not its back to the drawing board and you are spending another first on a qb. I also couldn't be more pleased with the steelers draft.
