Good read for the new Fans - a recent primer on the Browns

This is a pretty good read on the Browns by Scott Fujita :
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/simply-put-i-was-sucked-back-in-by-the-draft-051314
Simply put, I was sucked back in by the draft
This past week, I think I became a football fan again.
Typically, as the NFL Draft approaches, I find myself trading barbs via social media with football fans and followers, quipping about the draft being Americaās quintessential tribute to Communism. This usually doesnāt sit well with many die-hard football patriots, who accuse me of blasphemy or of being downright un-American. But occasionally, by the end of our chat, a few folks reluctantly accept the āComradeā title Iāve bestowed upon them and see that itās actually the draft thatās rather un-American.
My closing argument might look something like this, in the form of a hypothetical workplace scenario I create for my Twitter opponent(s):
@sfujita55: Hey @SupaBowlWarDawg99, you are one of the absolute best in the world at what you do. And to reward you, weāre sending you to ______ (insert perceived hellhole geographic location or perennial dysfunctional organization). Congratulations! And weāre also going to cap your earning potential. And restrict you from going anywhere else as long as we possibly can. And if you underperform on the assembly line youāll likely be discarded. And if we fail to provide a competent regime and workplace environment for you and your fellow comrades, too f--king bad. Welcome to the USSR...um, I mean, the NFL.
āBut itās okay Comrade,ā Iād joke, āI went to Berkeley, so you and I are in the same bloc!ā
Obviously I was just having a good time with ā@SupaBowlWarDawg99ā and other like-minded football fanatics. Trolling, if you will.
But for years, I think a big part of me actually did resent the draft. Political ideology and my flair for the dramatic aside, I probably just resented the idea that so much time and effort (and dollars) were being allocated in an attempt to find someone better than me, and to replace many of my friends and teammates. So perhaps I lashed out at the intrinsically capitalistic, dog-eat-dog nature of the draft, by pointing out some of its more socialistic tendencies. Cognitive dissonance defined, kids.
But this yearās draft was different. My typical Berkeleyan rabble-rousing was replaced by rah-rahās and fist pumps.
And it pains me to admit that I actually contributed to the TV ratings by tuning in from time to time to watch NFL Draft coverage. Yes, I sold out! Hypocrisy at its finest.
The reason for my sudden change of heart? The Cleveland Browns
The ups and downs of the Cleveland Browns
Iām now about 18 months removed from playing the game, and naturally, Iāve continued to follow the sport. Especially the teams I feel most connected to: the Saints, Chiefs and Browns. I pull for my friends, hope they play well and win a lot of games, stay healthy, get big contracts, etc. But I donāt know if Iāve considered myself an actual fan.
I remember when Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur informed us on the opening day of training camp in 2012 that team owner Randy Lerner had just sold the club. I thought to myself: Thereās a whole bunch of dead men walking around here, and everyone knows it. This season might get pretty dismal. But I hadnāt thought much about how Browns fans viewed this transaction.
And when a local beat writer Iād become friendly with after joining the Browns in 2010 gave me a copy of Scott Hulerās On Being Brown: What it Means to Be a Cleveland Browns Fan, I read it and thought yeah, yeah, yeah ... every fan thinks theyāre more dedicated than every other fan.
But after a year and a half of following the Browns from the outside, Iāve begun to see the roller coaster ride that all Browns fans have experienced over the past few decades. Up and down. Up and down. Up and down.
With new owner Jimmy Haslam sounding staunchly committed to creating long-term stability, you couldnāt help but think the perpetual dysfunction and organizational overhauls that had plagued the Browns for so long had ended. But then reports of an FBI/IRS probe regarding Haslamās family business sounded awfully messy, creating a new sense of uncertainty around the team. This issue remains unresolved.
Scrappy quarterback Brian Hoyer comes off the bench and leads the upstart Browns to three consecutive wins during the 2013 season. When was the last time you saw that happen in Cleveland? But then he suffers a season-ending injury and the Browns lose 10 of their last 11 games.
When Browns team brass decided to trade running back Trent Richardson just a year after making him their top pick in the 2012 draft, I defended the move as a commitment to getting things right by loading up for future drafts. This was a courageous and forward-thinking decision, I argued, with an eye on stability. But just a few short months later, Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski was fired after less than a year on the job. Back to square one.
An exhaustive coaching search to find the right man to āstabilize this organizationā turned into a weeks-long train-wreck, as it appeared the Browns head coaching gig was a job no one would touch. Iāve never seen so many head coaching candidates declare publicly that they were removing their names from consideration for whatās typically a highly coveted job.
General Manager Mike Lombardi and CEO Joe Banner, the visionaries behind the Trent Richardson trade and the assumed architects of stability, got fired in February of this year. This happened just over a month after Chudzinskiās dismissal, and also right after new head coach Mike Pettine was hired. The timing here left everyone scratching their heads.
Each of these organizational facelifts are the kinds of things that may happen to a club every 5-10 years, if ever. But these all took place during the period of time Iāve been following the Browns as a non-player -- in just the last 18 months. Can you imagine going through 20, 30, 40 years of this? A lot of Browns fans can.
But what do they always say in Cleveland? Just wait ātil next year. Itās gonna be our year.
#Believeland
What transpired in Cleveland on Day 1 of this yearās draft was nothing short of exhilarating. I hadnāt been this fired up or engrossed in the draft since Dick Vermeil called my Berkeley apartment to tell me I was the 143rd pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2002 NFL Draft. Or perhaps since the L.A. Rams took Eric Dickerson with the second pick of the 1983 NFL Draft. Let the record reflect that if my folks would have let me wear a jheri curl, I would have.
But that first round by the Browns seemed straight out of Kevin Costnerās Draft Day (a movie I of course refuse to see because I donāt support films about Communism). I was getting text updates from friends and colleagues about trades down and trades up, and about how new Browns GM Ray Farmer was in total command during his first draft at the helm.
That was when I actually turned on the television to follow the draft coverage in real time! And I was sucked right in. And thatās when I saw the Cleveland Browns make the move to draft former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.
This was a move to get excited about. This was the pick that was going to change everything. I might travel out for a few (non-winter) home games in Cleveland this year! I may even reach out to Johnny Football to see if he wants to rent my condo in Crocker Park. Perhaps I could crash at his/my place when visiting, with dibs on his/my sofa. I mean, why not? I like to party.
Then I caught myself.
Who is this person fist-pumping in front of the TV on NFL Draft day?
Was I actually that conflicted when linebacker (and friend) DāQwell Jackson and the Browns parted ways this offseason?
Why did I feel relieved when the Browns matched Alex Mack's contract offer sheet from the Jacksonville Jaguars?
And had I really been so affected by every little up-and-down on that Browns roller-coaster ride these past 18 months.
Heaven forbid ... Am I a fan?
Damnit. I think I am.
And whoāda thought it would be the NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns, and JFF that would make me realize that?
But apparently 24 hours of gleeful optimism and childlike exuberance was too much to ask. Because the following day, news broke that Browns superstar wide receiver Josh Gordon may be facing a year-long suspension for another (alleged) failed drug test.
āBut apparently 24 hours of gleeful optimism and childlike exuberance was too much to ask.ā
Damnit. Are you f--king kidding me?
If this is fandom, I donāt know if I have the kind of heart that can sustain like this.
But itās gonna be okay.
Just wait ātil next year. Itās gonna be our year
Thatās how we roll in #Believeland.
It's really unbelievable what we've through the last two years.
Heck, I look back at just the last six months an it's nearly incomprehensible - 1st year Coach & staff let go, GM fired, CEO fired, FA, Draft, Gordon . . .
Welcome to all the new Fans . . . you may not like everything that's going to happen, but you won't be bored . . . and personally, I think things are turning around for the good.

If you think the last 18 months have been crazy, in the words of Al Jolson: "You ain't seen Nothing yet". To quote JFF: The Browns are gonna wreck this league.

Note you you newbies: One of the reasons "true" Browns fans are skeptical about what we perceive to be bandwagon jumpers is that...as true fans of the team we have stuck with this team through the thin and thinner that we have had to put up with these oh so many years, and we have a certain skepticism about anyone who has not "felt our pain" be able to truly relate to what it is to be a Browns fan.
And the other thing is that something else is totally anathema to us: The FRAK. The FrontRunnerAssKisser. Those are the guys that espouse loyalty to one team or another, and follow one team or another purely on the basis that that particular team has been fairly good.
Many of you being from Texas I am sure you know the type: they jump on the Cowboys bandwagon when they are good and jump like a flea to a new dog when the blood runs dry. The FRAK Phenomena is even more legion with a team about 140 miles down the turnpike from here. We have a great number of them here who have this ignorant concept in their mind that because the majority of the people around them are fans of the Browns, and because their psyches cannot handle conforming apparently, that they go root for the more successful main rival of our team. Do these fuckfaces root for the Saints/Jags/Chargers/ etc. teams that have not had such great success? No, they glom onto the rival that was a winner.....not because they like that team per se, but only because in their insecure little brains they lack the capacity to have character, loyalty or allegience to their home team. They would be the type of people that would have rooted for Germany when they were winning WWII, but then turn on them and root for another country when things go bad for them.
So, understand, we know you want to continue to follow your boy, and that is OK. But just don't be surprised if we are a bit wary of FRAKs....which is a different thing.
-
Listen you newbie JFF fans...you only care about him because he plays for the shithole of a team you root for. You're not real JFF fans, but I bet you'll hop on the bandwagon as he drags that pathetic excuse for a franchise to heights of glory you've never experienced before.
Now shut the fuck up about new Browns fans and enjoy the ride.

I'M NOT APOLOGIZING FOR ACTUALLY BEING FUCKING EXCITED FOR 2014
Dude, we dont have a lot of rules here, but don't mock the moderation or you'll disappear and no one will miss you after. ... Oh. ... An hour.

And for u New newbies this is walterWhite he's been on this particular board for about 3 months and a diehard Browns fan since about last Thursday at about 10:15ish or so and is a true example of how class and respect is supposed to be shared. We all have a little to learn from this guy for sure. For example every time JF is on tv, radio, or just pops into my head I instantly start fondling myself. Thanks WW u r a true inspiration to little Kentucky

Fact of the matter these JF fans (I refuse to say JFF) are going to be bitching and moaning once WK1 begins and Johnny isn't the starter. They are going to avoid threads as long as Hoyer plays decent, and when he has a bad game they are going to jump in and call for his head. When ever Johnny begins to start, whether it be this season, or next, or in 3 years what ever, we are going to see the same thing from the Shaw fan boys.
-
FRAK? Sorry Gipper. You must have us confused with that place over in Austin. If you knew our history this term would never have been used.
Have you ever been through 10 straight years never beating your rival while still hoping every year things would change?
We beat that team from Austin when our only other Heisman winner was with us in 1956. It wasn't until 1967 that we finally did it again.
FRAK. Sorry, foreign language to me.
Harry-no one asked for JFF to have his redshirt removed when we were hearing about this phenom chewing up the 1's with a scout team. I doubt what you suggest will happen. We all are aware you can ruin a good QB by playing him before he is ready. I trust this staff to know when that is. This isn't our first rodeo.

Probably, but I surely hope the Coaching staff doesn't cave in on this.
Manziel needs time to learn and get accustomed to the NFL, we've trashed entirely too many QB's by throwing them to the wolves too early - and wolves is what we face in the AFCN.
I'm going to say this and I know I'm going to catch flack for it, but McCoy should have started at least the first six games of the 2012 Season.
Not because he's a stellar QB, but because it would have given Weeden at least a small glimmer of hope to come up to speed, plus it would have been interesting to see what Colt could have done with some actual weapons and (OL) protection.
I don't want to see us rush another QB in when he's not ready, that's why we've been in the situation we've been in the last xx years.
Heck, the latest poll they mentioned on ESPN Radio said at least 50% (might have been 70% - Memory) said didn't want Manziel to even start this Season.
Something like 14% wanted to see him start game 1 . . . come on folks, at least give the kid a chance - this is the freakin' NFL after all, not College.

Yes. We have.
And we played our rivals twice a year, so it's doubly worse.
To compare the word of A&M to Cleveland is laughable at the very best.
Kindly get that shit out of here.

Compelling perspective from Fajitas. Why the Browns gravitate towards dysfunctional drama is any bodies guess. They can get well real quick if they come out in September and win a couple games against what looks to be a pretty fuckin serious early schedule

Nah.
I see where he's coming from.
Granted, it's only the tip of the proverbial Iceberg compared to what we're used too, but at least he has a clue as to what it's like.
Be forewarned, it can be bad, and likely will be unfortunately.
It may sound awfully cliche', but this is the NFL, and it's a whole different level than College.
It's far and few between that make that transition easily, and it usually takes a Season or two (or three) . . . hence the high (Draft) round NFL bust rate being as bad as it is.
(Hopefully), we're all pulling that the players we've just Drafted/signed (via FA ) are going to all pan out.
There's not always a quick fix though, and as a Browns fan, we've been stuck in the wait and see phase for entirely too long.
-
All you Texan and Cowboy fans are a fucking joke. You gave up on your team cause they didn't draft the rookie you wanted. You are the fans that real fans make fun of...you guys do know this right? I've seen a few Browns fans bitch and cry and threaten to quit on the Browns but then you'll see that same person post the next day. I like all Browns/Buckeye players but couldn't care less after they're gone... cause they're not Browns/Buckeyes anymore. I don't even know if there's a word for you guys... bandwagon doesn't seem right cause we haven't won anything yet.

Yeah... for starters there's the fact that this year will mark the 50th anniversary of our last league championship.
I'm old enough to remember that game...

i dont know why its so hard for some to acknowledge new fans. certain players have their own fanbase whats new. Yea if Johnny Football sucks (I personally highly doubt this will happen) they wont be fans for long but if he does well and wins and is with the team for 10 years I'm sure many of the new fans will have plenty of great memories and experiences they wont forget when he retires or changes teams late in his career and if that scenerio plays out im sure the majority of the new fans will keep rooting for the browns after manziel leaves. especially since after all they are gonna develop feelings (no Michael Sam) for other players on the team such as the recievers, line, defense ect as they are exposed to them watching Johnny's games. I'm sure these guys didn't just root for Johnny Football in college I'm sure they were fans of Matthews / Evans all the way down to the walk ons because it's a team game and for the QB to do good the team has to do good. It will be the same way here if Johnny Football is winning games these guys will grow to love the guys that are helping him win and want to support them too as well as develop a loyalty to the fans that they share the experience with. I highly doubt if Johnny Football is successful that the A&M fans (some of the best and most loyal fans out there) will simply abandon their fellow fans that they have met watching games, at bars, online, wherever. It's not like this is some guy coming out of the U or some other bandwagon school the reason these guys are so gung ho on JFF is because they are amongst the most loyal in CFF and I don't know why they wouldn't be great fans to have.

Here's the deal with new fans. For example, you have the Steelers pick up millions of band wagon fans for their last Superbowl win. A TON. You get these soccer mom fans with pick or Jet fans (that get fed up) become fans. Then when their team sucks, they jump ship (I've backed this up with attendance and win/loss argument MANY times on this board for proof). The improved Browns will be a playoff contender soon rather than later. JF fans want to jump board, but will they be on board if God forbid JF gets hurt and we lose a couple players to injury? Will you stay aboard? My guess is no. We don't want that behavior associated with the Browns, all we have is pride over the last 15 years; and I am damn proud of that. As storied the Steelers franchise is, they have the single most arrogant fan base on the planet, with the least knowledge of the game for this reason. New fans that don't know shit about the game and I would personally be embarrassed by this. While our team has sucked for the past part of more than a decade, we stay fans. When people laugh and disrespect the Browns, when I tell them I am a fan, it's because they don't respect the game. They have no clue of how storied the franchise and what the Browns did for football. Laughing at the Browns is laughing at football.
So I say if you can stay though thick and thin. Welcome aboard.
