  • What are you talking about? We heard all about Winston from ESPN. We even had to hear about him being on the baseball team. CFB players aren't doing much right not though, unlike NFL players.

And let's not act like all this unwanted media attention for JF came out of no where and he had no part in it. He's done plenty to create that media attention himself...

  • The unwanted media attention for JFF has been going on since he won the Heisman.

Look at the evil he has done. He got a speeding ticket. He got a parking ticket. He went to a few NBA games. Went to a few parties. Now the curr went to Vegas, and WITH the blessing of his coach.

It's been ridiculous for a while.

  • the dude is a celebrity. he built his own 'brand'. he has a fanbase that has surpassed that of tebow.

i guess he gets to decide whether or not the media attention is unwanted or not. seems to me like he got what he wanted and now wonders why he can't shake champagne on some girls without someone taking a pic of him. hell we saw pics of him on the airplane.

    careful what you wish for.

  • The best quote from a commentator yesterday hit the nail on the head. "Just think how it would have been if we had twitter and instagram around when Broadway Joe was playing." Even the old bastards at the round table laughed and agreed with that.

Here is my take on what has happened.: Texas A&M left their old cheating partner of over 100 years to join the big bad SEC West with predictions from all that they would be near the bottom in 2012. In comes this silent kid out of nowhere who has gained the nickname Johnny Football by what he has done to the A&M defense with nothing more than a scout team. He stays silent that whole season (as required by the head coach) while breaking SEC legend Archie Manning's records that had held since the 60's and leading that predicted loser to a 5th place national ranking while running ragged the most vaunted defensive team in the nation on their home field and winning the Heisman Trophy with nothing but his play and a catchy nickname that not even he was comfortable with.

Like any great athlete he is made an instant celebrity. We just have a different age in which it happened. Go back and look at Broadway Joe or even Jim Brown, both of whom were national celebrities back in their day, but without any national 24 hour sports stations, twitters, internets, instagrams, etc. The same would have happened to both of these great athletes because people marvel at what they actually do on a football field. They are all 3 one of a kind. No brag, just fact.

  • Its all folderol. What matters is what happens between the lines on Sundays in the fall.

  • Some interesting little bits coming out of the interviews:

    - Manziel checked with Pettine and the appropriate people whether he was OK to Vegas; Pettine said 'have fun'

    - Gilbert's injury not serious

    - Jim O'Neill is very impressed on the DL with Rubin, Bryant, Taylor, impressed with Billy Winn and John Hughes, and also...Calvin Barnett? Never heard of the guy, but I guess we may be seeing some of him. UDFA out of Ok. State, 6-2, 347lbs.

    - Shanahan again talking about the play action being a big part of the offense. I hope you all watching a run heavy offense, it looks like we're going to run to set up the run, then throw in some play action and the occasional pocket passing. Sounds like it's designed for a run happy QB...

    - Dansby, who has been missing so far, has a slight injury that he's dealing with elsewhere, since these OTAs are voluntary. I'd rather he was there, and it seemed like Pettine wasn't happy with him not being there. But then, Pettine doesn't seem happy ever.

Edit: Originally had Kirksey as the one missing, apparently it's Dansby.

    Better advice... "Wear a condom."

OK... then tell me what Jim Brown's nickname was.*

Gip, please check me on this, but as I recall during his playing days Brown was nowhere near the national celebrity Nameth was.

In part this was due to the markets in which they played. In part due to the coaches for which they played. Paul Brown kept his players under wraps ("When you win, say nothing. When you lose, say less."); Weeb Eubanks may well have been under orders to unleash the AFL's bonus baby.

Until Jim retired, and went Hollywood rather than accept threatened fines for missing camp when Dirty Dozen filming ran long, I don't think he ever made the national news for an off-field reason. Much different story after he retired when other than the "balcony incident" he positively used, and reinforced, his celebrity by advancing causes in which he believed.

So pardon me, but the facts as I see them do not warrant his inclusion with Joe or JF... IMO. Jim Brown was a sports hero who turned celebrity. Joe Willie was a celeb who became a sports hero with SBIII.

JF? Clearly he's already a hero to some here (and potentially a hero for all here). Clearly he has celebrity. Is there a difference anymore? Can there be a difference in an era with TMZ and 24 news? That I do not know, but once there was a difference.

*Other than "Jim" (his given name was James) he did not have a nickname. Not sure if it is true, but some report that he thought nicknames "were for sissies".

It was a good read... shed a little light on Hawkins.

The positive summary of JM's redzone performance was an interesting contrast to the ESPN reporter's summary on NFL Live yesterday. The word the latter used was "inconsistent".

  • Tour-rest assured Johnny would not have gained that nickname without the internet. It made it from the practice field to the texags.com website and took off from there.

My guess is that a player as well known in his day as Jim Brown would have exploded in today's multimedia. He was that great. Will JM be that great NFL player? I don't know.

But he was that great college player and the media ran with it.

So you are saying there is a chance... 🙂

    Maybe...

In my prior post I said that I do not know if sports heroes exist anymore without also being celebrities, but some just came to mind that may show that they do.

    Adrian Peterson? Calvin Johnson?

Both are widely held up as the best at their position, but neither strikes me as being a celeb.

    Maybe the better question is:

Is celebrity a next-level-of-fame choice a "sports hero" makes? A choice some cultivate?

    Sure...

Then again nothing in "it looks like we're going to run to set up the (pass), then throw in some play action and the occasional pocket passing" screams "designed for a run happy QB" to me. What it screams for is a QB with great play action skills.

It's going to be a while until we have the chance to see what difference exists there.

OK, maybe run happy isn't what I meant. It means we're looking at 'mobile' QBs - guys who can sell the play fake and then get out in to the space quickly enough to buy themselves time to find the downfield receiver or, if there's space, pick up an easy first down. Not quite read option, but I remember Hoyer excelling at that last year (I think?) and Manziel seems very suited to it.

except, besides namath, manziel searched for the spotlight to help build his 'brand'. he has said in interviews what it 'took' to get to this level of celebrity.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2016339-johnny-manziel-looking-to-secure-numerous-trademarks

    http://q.usatoday.com/2014/03/21/johnny-football-is-becoming-more-than-a-nickname/

so everyone can say that a local sports announcer calling the game uttered the words 'johnny football' but there's no denying he's taken the ball and run with it.

now he can't be surprised when his celebrity status comes back to bite him in the ass when he goes out on the town to grab a cheeseburger and is mugged by 20 cameramen. then he gets upset.

i'm sure all the little fledgling actors and actresses crave the cameramen early in their career to promote themselves, then when they hit it big they scream about 'inavasion of privacy' and are schocked when TMZ mugs them outside a restaurant.

  • The whole "signing things for money" may have helped as well....

... Then doing to "show me the money sign" all the time. Basically saying "The NCAA knows it is in their best interest to ignore that whole ruke breaking thing. I'm gonna flaunt that shit. Some will call it 'moxy', 'swagger', etc. I'm the best"

Just saying, he's not exactly "Poor old JF" just trying to live his life and play football.

If only Dez Bryant was that lucky...

  • So lets get a football question out of this:

In Kevin Jones' article cited on page 1 of OTA's thread he says, "But boy, there were some throws that should have Browns fans giddy about the future of this team. In particular during a red-zone set, Manziel bootlegged hard towards the right sideline and found a streakingJordan Cameronicon-article-link.gif, all the way in the left side of the end zone."

So here is the question--Was that from the playbook or was that a creative play by JM and Cameran off the called play? Most people think sprinting the QB to the R cuts the field down to 1/3 so why would a throw to the L endzone be in the playbooK? Did the Browns ever run that play last year or did RGIII ever use it under Kyle?

  • 1st....Bleacher Report? Seriously?

2nd...yes JFF trademarked the name. Why? Because he became known as that name and if he didnt trademark the name, anyone could use it for anything. Someone could use it to associate him with something he might not want to be associated with.

It was more to protect his brand than to build it.

  • the only other player that i know of that had a brand coming into the NFL was brian bosworth.

Maybe not more, but just as much. Plus, who on here wouldn't build his brand if he could? Some need to stop acting like a bunch of envious bitches. Who here who had just signed a big deal with Nike at the age of 21 wouldn't want to be hanging at a pool party in Vegas with a bunch of bikini clad hotties and being the guy who got to give the champagne shower? Hell, I am in my 60's and would like to do that again, and tomorrow. Some might think of me as a dirty old man....news flash...the only thing that has changed is the "old" part.

If any of you say you wouldn't have done that or wouldn't do it if given the chance, you're a homo.

    We are Johnny Football.
