  • I'm almost willing to bet Mingo will turnout to be a bust as predicted...He still does nothing that gives Me any sign he'll be anymore than what he already is..id trade him now if I could.

I don't know about that quite yet. He was seen as a project from the get-go (and he still is) but you can't deny that he showed flashes last year that were impressive.

I would say he deserves at least 2 more years before we decide whether or not he's a bust because it's still way too early to tell.

  • Mingo was drafted 6th because of his "freakish athleticism" and his "potential"............... Lots of coaches have been fired building a team full of guys who have potential.

  • it was a weak draft also. Finding players who could live up to the 6 pick, potentially, was a tough task. Everyone knew he'd have to add some bulk to be an every down player.

  • We'll know more on Mingo this year. I know our DC says he like him.

  • Its safe to assume he's as good as he will ever be after one season.....right? Players simply don't develop.....they're as good as they'll ever be by the time they leave college.

  • The biggest thing standing in the way of Mingo being an every down linebacker is not his size it's his lack of coverage skills.

  • one year as a body of work and you're ready to call him a bust?

wow. there are some high standards around here.

  • No WAY. Mingo is boss. He WILL have 12 sacks

  • The biggest thing standing in the way of Mingo being an every down linebacker is not his size it's his lack of coverage skills.

Nope. Its run defense. On passing downs hes rushing, most of the time. Id say hes probably already better in coverage than Kruger and Sheard. The coverage responsibilities will be left to the middle backers most of the time.
  • I don't see how Grossi came to that conclusion based off the quote about Sheard.

I hated the Mingo pick and it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but a pass-rushing specialist is something that teams have to gameplan for. If Mingo can manage 1-1.5 sacks per game, he'll end up in the Hall of Fame.

Between Mingo, Sheard, Kruger, Dansby, Robertson and Kirksey, I think our LB corps will be more similar to hockey lines than anything else. We'll have a pass rushing line, a run stopping line, a "get the ball" line, an all-around line, a prevent line, etc.

  • Browns will be pinching themselves if mings average 1/2 sack/game.

  • I'm predicting 12 sacks for Mingo.

    Kiss of death

  • Did he get hurt? He had a really strong start to the season didnt he?

  • " A 6th overall player taken should be a staple of any team and ALL-PRO."

If we expand that to include people taken above 6th, that's 6 all-pro's being drafted every year, assuming that nobody below 6th is allowed to be all pro (though I suspect if he'd been drafted 7th we'd be talking about 7 every year). Average career of a player - call it ten years? So that's 60 all-pro players at any one time. Excluding special teams, obviously, there were 31 players in the all pro team this year.

That's without even thinking about the merit of taking an RB, OG, ILB or other players you wouldn't really draft that high.

If we put the 20\20 hindsight goggles on, 4 players drafted after Mingo made the Pro Bowl. + Kiko Alonzo, but you can drive yourself crazy playing the what-if game.

    Yes it was.

  • Its only one season. He was a project from the beginning and you don't quit on projects after one year.

Though it looks like we have plenty of "_I told you so"s lining up here. Of course, who knows what they actually said then, but at least they look right now

  • both pettine and o'neil wanted to draft him in buffalo as well as some other teams i'm sure. i know pettine is not a GM or scout but they must have had all the info laid out for them on the kid. if he's a bust then that doesn't bode well for these guys when looking at talent. having watched pettine on the sidelines in locally televised games i think the guy knows what he's doing.

mingo needs to go to the dick butkus/jack lambert school of rip your head off football. the guy is almost too nice. throw him in the boxing ring or something. he needs to turn into a bad ass from the neck up.

  • Only in Cleveland does it mean you hate one player if you give another player a compliment.

    1. If they have big plans for Sheard, they should re-sign him now before he blows up.

    2. Only the media and the fans are calling Mingo a situational role player. Im sure Pettine and O'Neil are salivating over him. It's like buying a house and finding a Ferrari in the garage.

Plenty of pass rushing and linebacking to go around folks. Kruger will be utilized differently too.

Look as some of the Ryan/Pettine defenses, they are in no way conventional or vanilla. They get the most out of the latent they have. We have tons of talent in our front 7.

  • it makes perfect sense to me that sheard was picked as having a great year. i think he's earned it myself. mingo needs to add some bulk and be more dominate.

they need to utilize his long arms in a way where he bats down 3 passes a game and puts the ball in play for our D.

12 sacks is cool but i'm greedy so give me 20.

But Sheard doesn't exactly fit the purported Pettine mold of a coverage capable LB.

Good analogy... now if we can just figure out a way to dump the puck so we can change on the fly. I guess we could lead the league in leg cramps...

  • Here's a good one:

"New defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil, who worked as the Buffalo Bills’ linebackers coach under Pettine last season, was a fan of Mingo’s before last April’s draft, when he was invited to Buffalo for one of the Bills’ 30 official visits.

O’Neil’s wife was a fan of Mingo’s as well, and even made “Mingo cupcakes” (which were different flavors and had “Mingo” written on top) for the Bills’ decision-makers in an effort to persuade them to select the talented pass rusher from Louisiana State."
