Well of course we could trade defense for NASA. Still without our current position of power on the world stage we need to find somewhere to colonize.

It already is up through grade 12. And still look at all the functional illiteracy there is. I say spend the money on more police and throw people in jail that don't study hard enough. How's that sound? Mandatory education requirements or slave labor!Education should be free anyway.

Yep, I watched that live today - pleasantly surprised that it took off at 7:05, when they said chances were '40%' of a launch today.

Actually, I'd bet one of the first things we do to the moon is start mining it.

In the very long term - yes. However, the moon's much closer, and therefore cheaper to traffic things back to Earth, so you can bet that the moon will be the location of the first extraterrestrial base.
