15 worst owners in sports

The Browns Board

  • Jerrry Jones has to be #1 by a long ways. He could have won 2-3 more

Super Bowls with the talent he had on that team with Jimmy Johnson. Hell

he even won one in spite of Barry Switzer being coach. He insists on being

GM of the team and running the show, Snyder is terrible but he still has a

way to go to catch Jerry.BTW Haslam and Gilbert on the list but not the Dolans

who throw nickels around like manhole covers????

For that matter what exactly was the problem with Randy Lerner? He spent whatever he was asked to spend.

Actually did what the fans wanted by hiring real football people and keeping his nose out of it.

What is the bitch with Jimmy Haslam? Cleaned up his mess didn'the?

    WSS

I thought Lerner was disengaged, not interested in the franchise all that much. Disengaged people don't make the best hiring decisions, IMO.

And I wasn't bitching about Haslam, I was praising him. 🙂

Not you Osiris , I was just asking that question in a rhetorical way.

  • Gipper says politics has nothing to do with it. Then he says for Snyder it was the name Redskins. Dude that's politics.

So remove that sin from Snyders scroll and you have some meddling. Hardly enough to make him Satan in the Hades of owners.

  • Of course politics is a lot of it. Rolling Stone is calling Haslam one of the worst owners on more than just the truck stop rebates, but because his company is the top supplier to the drilling and fracking industries. Doesn't get any more political than that.

  • But to keep it on topic of football on this board, I say they miss on this aspect because Haslam fixed his rookie year mistakes. Likely the best year of Browns football since '99.

So. OK, maybe then the list does not mean that these guys are the worst owners because of the way that they have mismanaged their teams.......or screwed over the fans.......but because these are just the 'baddest guys' out there because of the way they conduct their lives and business. If so, so be it. These are the worst owners from a personal life/political point of view, not a sports management point of view.

I guess that is what I get for not reading the article.

Edit, OK, after looking at the list it has about half to do with the management competency, and the other half because they are "personally/socially vile". Very well. Fair game I guess for Rolling Stone.

Notwithstanding what they say here about these fatcat owners, each and every one of you wants your picture on the cover.

Art Modell and Donald Sterling are missing which leads me to believe this means current owners. Otherwise this last would lack any credibility.

Also, the reason Haslem is on there mainly has to do with the Pilot/Flying J scandal.

  • i stopped giving a fuck about what rolling stone thought when i stepped into the 80s.

Mik, for me, it may have been the 70s. LOL

  • I think Jimmy has been a great owner.

Our team has improved a great deal.

The Improvements to the stadium have been tremendous

Improvements will contiunue this off season. I can't wait to see the improvements.

The south side of the stadium activities pre-game are fantastic.....I am going next week to see the ice sculpting...

What this guy is talking about, I don't have a clue.......Go Jimmy!

  • @jim_brown said:

i got to agree that dan snyder is the worst....but to baltimore fans it will always be jim irsay, for sure.....hands down.....the cocksucking thief in the night.....

You mean Robert Irsay, not Jim.

    you are so right.....my bad...

  • If Brian Hoyer owned a sports team he would be #1.

  • Haslam hasnt been the owner long enough to be on the list. Beyond that and more importantly I think he's done and admirable job especially considering all the person controversy. He shouldn't be on that list.

  • The first thing I would do with that list is to remove Jimmy Haslam & replace him with Larry Dolan...what a waste HE is!

    Mike

  • C'mon Jim Irsay got busted with all the oxycontin, shit hammered driving his car. That's gotta at least be as bad as fucking up some rebates at the truck stop...

    WSS

  • Someone mentioned Art Modell. Hell, if we're mentioning PAST owners, Ted Stepien is a "slam dunk" for the list.

    Mike

    What a concept!

Not political beliefs per se, but "questionable" bizness practices. Then the view of those practices, like the WSH team name, tend to fall along partisan lines...

Haslam may have overseen a rebate ripoff, but he appears to be a strong organization manager. Strength exhibited by his reorg of the Browns with clearly delineated responsibilities and selection of what appear to be very capable people to run his organization followed by limited interference. Witness word that while he wanted to be informed of the Hoyer/ Manziel decision, he did not participate in it.

Remember that our Jimmy's "false start" with Banner, Heckert and Chud was forced upon him by the league.

Snyder on the other hand has been "hands on" from the start of his disastrous ownership.
