Consider what "Could have been" for the Colts
-
The Browns hope to take down the Colts who rely mostly on their "generational QB" Andrew Luck. But consider what could have been the lineage of Colts QBs:
Johnny Unitas comes on their scene in the mid 50s......just after the franchise was formed out of the ashes of the Dallas Texans.
JU retires in the 1973......just when Bert Jones came on the scene, drafted by the Colts in 1973.
Jones was a fabulous QB for those who don't know. The Colts had some very good seasons early on with him.....then fell off a bit for two reasons: injuries to Jones and the management of the team by Robert Irsay. Jones played for the Colts until 1981, spent 1 year with the Rams, then retired because of those injuries in 1982. I do want to emphasize that talent wise Jones was the equal or superior to any of the QBs in this thread.
In 1983 the Colts then choose in the first pick of the draft: John Elway. Now we know that Elway didn't want to play for Irsay the idiot....and who could blame him. He forced a trade. Of course the Elway deal is the biggest "What if" in Colts history and for this thread.
(note....as consolation for losing Elway the Colts got the right to pick Jeff George....who does not stack up the the other QBs on this list....but he is in there. Plus they did have the decent Jim Harbaugh for their QB for like 4 years.)
Elway retired after the 1998 season.....and of course who was the #1 overall pick of the Colts in 1998?
Peyton Manning....who becomes the starting QB for 14 years. But he is allowed to go in Free Agency just in time for the Colts to select:
Andrew Luck. and, of course his last name tells it all for the history of that team especially in getting him.
So, for us, the Browns, a team that has had to endure 20 starting QBs in the last 15 years, this kind of talent and stability at the QB position is quite enviable.
-
Compare the Browns. Just since 1999 we have had the following people as our primary starting QBs in those years:
Couch....4 years
Holcomb....1 year
Garcia....1 year
Dilfer.....1 year
Frye.....1 year
Anderson....2 years
Quinn.....1 year
McCoy....2 years
Weeden....1 year
Campbell....1 year
Hoyer.....1 year so far. But how long will he last? (does anyone think he will be the starting QB again next year?)

You have to admit by tanking an entire season it sure payed off by getting Luck. Now all they need is a defense. But back to your point.
If the Browns drafted better maybe we wouldn't have the rare distinction of twenty quarterbacks in 15 years. Maybe MCNabb plays for ten with us. They passed on LaDanian and several other future hall of famers so now with new ownership maybe it changes. If Pettine can build off this year, draft a wide receiver or tight end things look good in the near future.

McNabb would likely not have fared any better. It is entirely possible that Couch would have had the kind of career McNabb had had Philly and not Cleveland taken him......absent the injury factor which is what actually killed Couch's career. His labrum and rotator cuffs were just threads by the time he retired.

I'm always so hit or miss about the idea of tanking games. On the one hand you never want people to lose on purpose, but one bad year cause easily equate to 10+ good ones by getting that elite QB. This year aside I wonder what could have been sometimes if we didn't draft 3-7.

Couch wasn't that good when he was healthy.
He never had a QB rating as high as Hoyer, or threw for as many yards in a season has Hoyer has in first year as a starter ... and people are ready to string up Hoyer.
Yes, he played on a bad expansion team ... but he just wasn't that good, I see no need to make excuses for him.

He was better than anyone else the Browns have had. Still a wait and see about Hoyer.

Yeah, I'd say he was not better than Anderson, Garcia, Dilfer, Hoyer and maybe McCoy. But to each, his own opinion.

Yea I think you would be wrong.....at least as far as their Browns career was concerned. (Garcia and Dilfer obviously had good days with other teams).
Couch is the only QB to beat the Steelers on a regular basis. He is the only one to lead the Browns to the postseason.
Those things count for something with me. (but as noted.....jury on Hoyer is out......I hope certainly that we can say that he will have performed better than Tim Couch.....so far so good)

Considering how many times a sure fire #1, has failed to produce. Its less about where you pick and more about your ability to pick(with a bit of luck added in that who you picked doesn't get injured).

Hes still laughing his fat ass off in Seattle. Living off of his payoff.
... except when he comes out to defend his decisions as Prez of the Browns.
That's serious bidness...

Well I meant just better QBs in general, if i had to choose among those QBs in the prime of their careers to win one game. But based on Browns career only, Hoyer is the best so far, but like you said that book is still open.

Win 3 of the next 4 games.....and he would have 10 wins, most since 1999.....and would match DA in 2007. Get 9 wins but get into the playoffs and he would match Couch in '02 (but he would have to be injured in win vs. Ravens and not start the playoff game).
Get those 10 wins AND get into the playoffs....then he would surpass both. Win a playoff game.....and its a no brainer.
