Pettine has already admitted to mistakes. We finished last but this season provided me a lot of enjoyment. I saw a rejuvenated fan base at the stadium and feel like we are headed up. Call me a homer if you will. I'm looking forward to next year.
  • Texas, I really thought you were a Johnny fan boy. If you stick around, welcome aboard to the the up and coming team every year.

  • Pettine is the real deal! He showed no preference and didn't coddle Farmer's two first rounders. He's a tough minded football coach with class, integrity and demands discipline. It's going to be his way or the highway. He's one of the bright spots heading into next year.

No way he'll be talked into giving players preferential treatment. Good on him!

  • And he'll be 100% gone after next year..

  • Haslam says Browns won’t tolerate “irresponsible” players

Posted by Mike Florio on December 28, 2014, 5:26 PM EST

With the Browns seeing a 7-4 start disintegrate to an 0-5 finish, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam won’t be hiring a new coach or a new G.M. The same ultimately may not be said for some of the team’s high-profile players.

Via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Haslam said after Sunday’s loss to the Ravens that the Browns are “not going to tolerate people who are irresponsible no matter what round they were drafted in.”

He’s referring to quarterback Johnny Manziel, cornerback Justin Gilbert, and receiver Josh Gordon, each of whom found trouble this weekend for failing to be where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there.

Haslam also said that the Browns will continue to work with the team’s irresponsible players, but he made it clear they’ll be gone if they don’t “fall in line.”

As to Manziel, it remains to be seen whether he has gotten the message. During Sunday’s loss, he was on Twitter, clicking “favorite” on a tweet from TMZ regarding Chris Rock’s looming divorce from his wife.

Maybe someday Chris Rock will be favoriting a tweet from TMZ regarding Manziel’s looming divorce from the Browns.

    Says it all

  • let's hope they do whatever they are going to do sooner than later.

    quick and clean.

  • If Ryan Leaf v2.0 is still on this team come the start of training camp, then I will never have an once of respect for the owner or the FO.

i don't like manziel either but i think it's kinda hard to give up on a first round pick literally over night. do i think he will make it in the nfl? no. but some people in the franchise might and unfortunately they make the decisions.

That's what I fear mik. He's a talentless, organizational cancer with zero trade value. The quicker he's gone, the better off we are. Puffy can stay until draft time and hopefully someone will want him.

I have seen enough of v2.0 to know he will never be an NFL QB, hopefully the guys making the decisions have the same eyes as I do.

  • Not that its much, but he's at max value now....there are still people out there that think he didnt get a fair shake....someone wants him.....

    Man, that would be sweet

  • Good. We need stability. I also like he's taking a no nonsense attitude to the punks who are late or skipping meetings. You have to earn the right to play.

Pettine's been saying that all year.

Scooped me Mark. The red says it all- ship him out for a sack of seeds if necessary.

Yup. Worst thing is keeping him on the team and influencing others to be punks too.

Pettine had to stay. Had he of been fired, it would've sent us into the dark ages for many more years.

Much more likely he gets 200 games with the Browns than Johnny fucktard the elf does.

Wow... just wow. He was at the fucking game.

There aren't supposed to be phones at games.

    Exactly my thinking...

Only one of the three being discussed has the celebrity to be a bad influence. Eliminate the influence and ask the other two if they really want to be a Brown. If they say, "yes," then give them through TC to prove it.

Why don't you go F yourself.

  • BALTIMORE -- Jimmy Haslam declared that some of the Cleveland Browns' young players need to "grow up," saying that players who are not dependable disrespect themselves, the team and the organization.

The Browns owner did not refer to Johnny Manziel, Justin Gilbert or Josh Gordon by name Sunday, but the implication was clear.

"I think a player who can't show up for meetings, can't make practice, can't make weight-lifting, disrespects himself," Haslam said. "But I think more importantly, and I think this is what these young guys miss, they disrespect the team, the coaches, the staff, the fans.

    “

They're young kids. We're going to work with them -- hopefully they grow up. But if they can't grow up and they can't be responsible to the their teammates and the coaches and our great fans, then they won't be with the Cleveland Browns.

    ”

    - Browns owner Jimmy Haslam

There's a lot of people in our organization whose livelihood depends on how well we do. We're not gonna tolerate people who are irresponsible, no matter what round they're drafted in."

Gordon was suspended for the season finale -- a 20-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens -- for missing a walk-through on Saturday. Manziel was fined for being late to his treatment for an injured hamstring and Gilbert was inactive Sunday after being late for a meeting Saturday night.

According to multiple media outlets, Manziel threw a party Friday night that was attended by multiple members of the team, including Gordon.

Haslam said the Browns would continue to work with the "young guys."

"We're gonna give them a chance," Haslam said. "They're young kids. We're going to work with them -- hopefully they grow up.

"But if they can't grow up and they can't be responsible to the their teammates and the coaches and our great fans, then they won't be with the Cleveland Browns."

Browns coach Mike Pettine promised he would address the situation of the three players who caused such a furor on Monday. But he declined on Sunday.

"It's disrespectful to the guys that put the uniform on today and went out and played their hearts out for the Cleveland Browns," Pettine said. "We have guys that we should be celebrating."

He then mentioned several, including Joe Haden, who played with the flu, Jim Leonhard, who is retiring, Craig Robertson, Marlon Moore, Joel Bitonio, Joe Thomas, Karlos Dansby and Donte Whitner.

"There were guys that didn't need to go out there and play," Pettine said. "They could have shut it down and didn't. And to me, it's disrespectful to them and the way they have played today ... I'll have plenty to say tomorrow."

Haslam made clear that he is not making a coaching change after the season, saying Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer will "absolutely" be back.

  • So based on that....I don't believe any will be released anytime soon. But I would be willing to bet they're all on the trading block starting tonight.

I think Gordon and Manziel are on the shortest leash with Gilbert being given time to "grow up".

  • Great MTB riding here in SoCal 365-1/4 days per year. If Haslam doesn't have the balls to do what needs to be done, then the money I save not buying the NFL package will go a long way for my biking.

Couple of comments- hey Joe played with the flu? You don't offer your players free flu shots? Great performance by Joe, and the D in general- until the lack of offense finally wore them down in the 4th quarter.

Very wise of you Mike- cool down and sleep on how you want to diplomatically ass-whip the Movie Star Midget, the Druggie, and Mr. Bad Attitude tomorrow.
