  • BALTIMORE -- Jimmy Haslam declared that some of the Cleveland Browns' young players need to "grow up," saying that players who are not dependable disrespect themselves, the team and the organization.

The Browns owner did not refer to Johnny Manziel, Justin Gilbert or Josh Gordon by name Sunday, but the implication was clear.

"I think a player who can't show up for meetings, can't make practice, can't make weight-lifting, disrespects himself," Haslam said. "But I think more importantly, and I think this is what these young guys miss, they disrespect the team, the coaches, the staff, the fans.

    “

They're young kids. We're going to work with them -- hopefully they grow up. But if they can't grow up and they can't be responsible to the their teammates and the coaches and our great fans, then they won't be with the Cleveland Browns.

    ”

    - Browns owner Jimmy Haslam

There's a lot of people in our organization whose livelihood depends on how well we do. We're not gonna tolerate people who are irresponsible, no matter what round they're drafted in."

Gordon was suspended for the season finale -- a 20-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens -- for missing a walk-through on Saturday. Manziel was fined for being late to his treatment for an injured hamstring and Gilbert was inactive Sunday after being late for a meeting Saturday night.

According to multiple media outlets, Manziel threw a party Friday night that was attended by multiple members of the team, including Gordon.

Haslam said the Browns would continue to work with the "young guys."

"We're gonna give them a chance," Haslam said. "They're young kids. We're going to work with them -- hopefully they grow up.

"But if they can't grow up and they can't be responsible to the their teammates and the coaches and our great fans, then they won't be with the Cleveland Browns."

Browns coach Mike Pettine promised he would address the situation of the three players who caused such a furor on Monday. But he declined on Sunday.

"It's disrespectful to the guys that put the uniform on today and went out and played their hearts out for the Cleveland Browns," Pettine said. "We have guys that we should be celebrating."

He then mentioned several, including Joe Haden, who played with the flu, Jim Leonhard, who is retiring, Craig Robertson, Marlon Moore, Joel Bitonio, Joe Thomas, Karlos Dansby and Donte Whitner.

"There were guys that didn't need to go out there and play," Pettine said. "They could have shut it down and didn't. And to me, it's disrespectful to them and the way they have played today ... I'll have plenty to say tomorrow."

Haslam made clear that he is not making a coaching change after the season, saying Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer will "absolutely" be back.

  • So based on that....I don't believe any will be released anytime soon. But I would be willing to bet they're all on the trading block starting tonight.

I think Gordon and Manziel are on the shortest leash with Gilbert being given time to "grow up".

  • Great MTB riding here in SoCal 365-1/4 days per year. If Haslam doesn't have the balls to do what needs to be done, then the money I save not buying the NFL package will go a long way for my biking.

Couple of comments- hey Joe played with the flu? You don't offer your players free flu shots? Great performance by Joe, and the D in general- until the lack of offense finally wore them down in the 4th quarter.

Very wise of you Mike- cool down and sleep on how you want to diplomatically ass-whip the Movie Star Midget, the Druggie, and Mr. Bad Attitude tomorrow.

  • nobody in that organization will take the blame for the fact that the season was a waste. And here we are once again in last place with no qb and a head coach in over his head. He's Romeo Crennell all over again!

thats is what counts....last place again with all the other teams in our division getting better...all 3 made the playoffs...what a disaster this franchise is...still no qb, no receivers...no dl...no impact pass rushers...yeah man we in great shape...pffffffft....

  • you gotta wonder if the 'three' were all together for manziel's bash and hungover and that's why everyone was late.

I believe it has already been confirmed they were all in attendance.

Along with 10 other players who attended.. Like Bernie said.. Someone should've grabbed these kids ( a team vet) and jacked their shit up and got their asses home.

I agree, not only because he's an 8th overall pick but because he has less strikes against him than manziel or gordonm

  • I'm prepared for the flaming I'll receive BUT.............I think there is a damn good chance that at least two of the three stooges have addictive behaviors. Manziels own father expressed that concern of his son in an interview this past summer.

  • Pettine had to stay. Had he of been fired, it would've sent us into the dark ages for many more years.

That's putting it lightly. The upside to such a move though is it would have "insured" the perennial #1 pick for the next decade. And as Browns fans draft talk is best talk, imagine what fun it would be for Browns fans between January and May? Every year too. So let's not dismiss this idea of firing yet another coach after 1 year. 😛

Funny you mention that, wasn't there story that Johnny's father said he'd buy him a car in high school if he would stop drinking?

It's pretty fucking bold if that's true. I wont be a hypocrite and say that I didn't drink in high school, but never to THAT extent and my folks never found out.

I believe both Josh and Johnny can show addictive tendencies. Like I said, if both are used as bait to trade into the top 10 this year (which I suspect they will be)

then I have zero issue with that.

  • Great. Did he tweet anything about Manziel?

Manziel sent him a text saying "Let's wreck this strip club" about 2 hours ago.

  • That's the least shocking headline of the week.
