Check my other posts on the matter yesterday, I am certainly not. But, I don't think we're ready to throw Manziel in without any backup plan, and short of drafting a guy who's going to come in and start (which I doubt), who else is going to be better than Hoyer, who already has a year in the system and the respect of his team mates?

  • Hoyer a bridge far enough

Hoyer is not a pro bowler but he is pretty good and he could be, but let's remember what he did with Alex Mack in the line up with few and young weapons. Plan should be to keep him and build around him. What's our needs. Deep threat, pass rusher, offensive lineman another tight end. What we don't need running back defensive back linebacker , manziel gilbert. So if possible package them to together for a first rounder and then we have three. Trade up get wr copper Bama, de Beasley Clemson, te o'leary florida st, and a o lineman. Bottom line is we have to stop taking qbs in the draft and let it come to us. Hoyer is more than capable with weapons. On top of that our backfield will be much improved next year. Kansas City and Arizona have both done this and it works. But the most I'm portant thing is to get the distractions out of the locker room . And at this point keeping Gordon is up in the air. I think hoyer an do the job and lead the team next year.

Pro bowl player? No way. Adequate back up. We need a QB which we don't have at the moment. Farmer said it pretty clearly. Where we will get that QB is anyones guess.

  • If Hoyer returns I am optimistic with improvements on our offensive line he can come in and get the job done. Without Hoyer it seems shaky. I have almost zero confidence in JM. I really like what I saw with Shaw and he did a great job Sunday but his size and arm strength are a concern although with Hoyer starting and Shaw as back up it would be OK.

I don't want to see the Browns give up what they would have to this year to try and get an elite QB in the draft.

Maybe try bringing in some veteran quarterbacks?

Well I guess there are only three opinions that mean jack shit and we know who they are.

Hopefully whatever they finally decide will be rooted in some kind of reality and understanding of the situation. Unlike any of us.

You recall this was Stockboy's arguement. The key difference is he wanted to do it when Hoyer was still winning games, but also when we didn't know anything yet in what Manziel had. And he repeated the point over and over endlessly.

LOL, should me and Z invite him back to eat a mega dose of crap? Nah unfortunately, that ship has sailed. It would be immense fun to pile on though, just how wrong he was about JFF.

But the guy to do what? Make the playoffs? Win the Division? Win the SuperBowl?

All are very different from "the QB giving us the best chance to win a given game".

All are goals that take more than even the greatest QB in history can supply. They are not a basis for evaluation.

That is what StockBoy never understood.

Clearly Hoyer gave us the best chance in 2014.

Worrying about having the best chance to win Week 1 and go from there.

Hoyer is an FA now does he give us the best chance to win Week 1 vs. all other FA's?

Vs. all QBs in the draft?

Vs. all QBs for which we might trade?

Worry about getting Week 1 right.

Five and counting...EDIT: we're up to eight.

LOL, If Pettine, Farmer, Shanahan, and Haslam make it an even dozen, Johnny's going to be looking for employment elsewhere. May have to let our resident historian Gip look up what's the fastest a first round pick has ever been cut. Richardson has to be at least closest, if not the first- top 10 pick to ever get traded short of 2 years.

Ha. I think it would be a disappointing venture anyhow. I don't think he was really a JM fan? His arguement was that Hoyer was a waste of time and they should find out sooner rather than later what JM has. He'd say if they would've put JM in sooner like he wanted, and given him more games to judge his body of work, they'd know better this year if he was "the guy" or not. And I bet he'd say JM wasn't in long enough to fully judge and they'll have use up games next year to evaluate him, and possibily still not get any better and waste more time finding "the QB".

He was the complete opposite of what Tour posted above about "winning one game at a time with the best QB option you have available". That is what the Browns need to do for the short term, but they also need to keep an eye out for that "franchise QB" without reaching too far IMO. But StockBoy's way meant to keep throwing QBs in there until the next P. Manning, Brady or Rodgers was found.

"It doesn't work that way...none of this works that way!"

Oh Lord, no... If Stocky and Taco ever got together they'd breed.

Some maybe, but more gained an appreciation as to why we stuck with Hoyer for as long as we did.

Yup... and I have never felt more secure in a position I have taken here. 🙂

If this isn't a situation to transition tag a guy then I don't know what is

You think Hoyer is worth giving 15 mill next year? My guess is if you offered him a three year 15 mill deal he'd take it....

Not sure that's how a transition tag works. The only thing is can they offer another one while Mack is signed to a transition contract??

Ok....here's a quick run down on how it would work...

#1) It would cost us about 13-15 mil per year, which is ridiculous for Hoyer....so Id say the trans tag is not an option

#2) There is no compensation for trans tag players....just franchise tag players...

#3) "IF" you trans tag someone and they sign elsewhere, then you lose the option to trans tag until that contract is up...(and if they sign with you, like Mack did, then you retain the right to tag again)

So...a trans tag on Hoyer would be a terrible mistake(if you ask me).....if we got him, he would be massively overpaid and if we didnt get him, then we'd lose the opportunity to trans tag better players in the future

Id call it a lose/lose situation....lets just make an offer and let him decide on his own....or not....

And, listening to Farmers Pressy, it's pretty clear he thinks the Browns and Hoyer have vastly differing opinions on his worth.....

  • We're not gonna transition tag Hoyer you silly duddys.

  • Sorry I didn't read all the responses here but let's face the music fellas. With all the Manziel drama it's easy to look back at Hoyer with big eyes like you do an ex-girlfriend. As I'm sure many of us have done, you go back to that person and realize why you broke it off in the first place. Manziel may be even worse, but Hoyer is a back-up level talent. Don't get wrong-I'm glad we brought him in and he showed the team how to actually win some games. But the team didn't just go to Manziel for no reason either.

The only way Hoyer signs here long-term is if he's told he's the starter which I don't blame him for at all. It's not gonna take 10+ million to get him cause no one is gonna pay him that. He's probably the best FA QB available though so people will be offering him some decent money.

  • I don't think any coach in good conscience could promise a quarterback he'll start no matter how he performs.

I mean I agree, I more meant he's be signing the contract knowing he's the guy going into the preseason. None of the training camp battle stuff we've come to love.

True. And the competitions haven't been as good a predictor as we've hoped.

  • I just find it funny we call the only browns qb with a winning record in decades a backup qb. He's definitely a starter.

While hoyer may not be "elite" or "franchise" he's the best option we have and there's noone upcoming I see that is a better option.

I wish we had an elite or franchise qb but the fact is there are about 5 guys in the world who can claim that title.

If you can't protect the qb and/or run well, you're gonna have a bad time.

Manziel is a bust, has zero NFL skills, and is not a leader.

Shaw is undersized and may be built of the same stuff as hoyer. But that isn't such a bad thing.

    Hoyer is our best option.

  • Assuming our OC and scheme do not change, then I agree that Hoyer is our best FA option. Also agree that you name him starter through TC and pre-season. There's simply no reason not to do so.

But I do not see it happening...

  • there was a qb on the cfl that last year was a stud up there. bring him in for a tryout. i think his contact might be up up there.
