The woulda/should/coulda of drafting QBs

The Browns Board

  • Here is the deal on the woulda/coulda/shoulda of the Browns drafting Super Bowl QBs:

Bart Starr ....drafted in the 17th round by Packer ....all other NFL teams including Browns passed on him 16 times.

Johnny Unitas...drafted in the 9th round by Steelers....all other NFL teams including Browns passed on him at least 8 times

Roger Staubach....drafted in the 10th round by the Cowboys....all other NFL teams including Browns passed on him at least 9 times...due to military commitment.

Bob Griese....Taken with the #4 overall pick of the draft.....Browns had no shot at taking him

Terry Bradshaw....Taken with #1 overall pick of the draft....Browns had no shot at taking him.

Ken Stabler....taken in the 2 round of the 1968 draft #52. Browns took Marvin Upshaw and John Garlington over Stabler.

Jim Plunkett....taken with #1 pick of the draft. Browns had shot at taking him

Joe Montana....taken with the 82d pick in the third round in 1979 draft. Ahead of him the Browns drafted Willis Adams, Lawrence Johnson, Sam Clapham, and James Ramey

Joe Theisman....take with the 99th pick of the 1971 draft. Ahead of him the Browns chose Clarence Scott, Bo Cornell, Paul Staroba, Robert Pena

Jim McMahon....taken with the 5th overall pick of the 1982 draft. That year the Browns drafted Chip Banks ahead of him with the #3 pick. (Art Schichter #4 by the Colts)

Phil Simms.....taken with the 7th overall pick of the first round in 1979. The Browns had no shot at him. (but taken 75 picks ahead of Montana)

Doug Williams....taken with the 17th pick of the 1978 draft. The Browns picked at #12 ahead of him and took LB Clay Matthews Jr.

Jeff Hostetler...taken 59th overall in the third round of the 1984 draft. Browns chose DB Don Rogers and WR Bruce Davis ahead of him.

Mark Rypien.....drafted in the 6th round #146 of the 1986 draft. Every team passed on him at least 5-6 times. Browns had him. He was no big deal. What they would have needed was Joe Gibbs to go with him.

Troy Aikman....#1 overall pick of the 1989 draft. Browns had no shot at him.

Brett Favre....taken #33 overall in 2d round of 1991 draft. Browns drafted Eric Turner in first round, and OG Ed King (a complete bust btw) just 4 spots ahead of Favre.

John Elway....taken with the #1 overall pick of the 1983 draft. Browns had not shot at him.

Kurt Warner....Undrafted QB that came out in 1994. Every team in the league could have had him numerous times over.

Trent Dilfer.....taken #6 overall in 1994. Browns had no shot at him.

Tom Brady....well documented #199 pick of the 2000 draft. Every team passed on him 5-6 times at least....including Browns who took Spurgeon Wynn 16 slots ahead of Brady.

Brad Johnson....taken in the 9th round of the 1992 draft. All teams passed on him at least 8 times.

Peyton Manning....taken #1 overall in 1998 draft. Browns had no shot at him.

Eli Manning .....taken #1 overall in 2004 draft. Browns had no shot at him.

Ben Roethlisberger....taken #11 overall in the 2004 draft. Browns chose TE Kellen Winslow with the #6 pick ahead of him.

Drew Brees.....taken with the #32 pick (second round) of the 2001 draft. Browns took Big Money Gerard Warren ahead of him with the #3 draft pick that year.....and one pick after Brees took Quincy Morgan.

Aaron Rodgers....taken with the #24 pick in the 2005 draft. Browns took Braylon Edward with the #3 pick that year.

Joe Flacco....taken with the 18th overall pick in the 2008 draft. The Browns had not shot at him as that year they didn't have a pick until the 4th round. Not sure what they traded all their picks for...but it wasn't worth it. (Brady Quinn?)

Russell Wilson....taken with the 75th overall pick of the 2014 draft. The Browns chose ahead of Wilson: Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden, and Mitchell Schwartz.

So let the second guessing begin. The ones I highlighted in red are the ones I feel that the Browns missed on and could have had. Some of these are guys everyone got wrong....but there were about a half dozen where if the Browns had been smarter could have really improved themselves.

  • I think my biggest regret is the decision to not take Rodgers in 2005. I mean, what did we have at QB then that screamed that we needed a prima donna WR like Braylon over a QB? Not taking him then meant we had to draft Charlie Frye in the third round.....and give up on him and take Brady Quinn in 2007.

Maybe we should have gone with BR in 2004....but compounding the QB situation by not taking Rodgers the next year is....in hindsight a major fuckup imo.

  • I'm starting to beleive that we could use all 10 of their picks this year on QB's and 8 of them would become competent NFL starters. The 2 we decided to keep would net us 4 seasons of horrible QB play and a combined record of 12 - 52. I don't see how we've missd so many times . . . Even bums in the streets could have picked a winner by now . . . Well maybe not.

Here is the deal on the woulda/coulda/shoulda of the Browns drafting Super Bowl QBs:

    Further perspectives on these situations:

Bart Starr ....drafted in the 17th round by Packer ....all other NFL teams including Browns passed on him 16 times.

Starr Drafted 1956....right when Otto was giving it up. Could have used him....started Tommy O'Connell instead. Drafted Milt Plum a year or two later.

Johnny Unitas...drafted in the 9th round by Steelers....all other NFL teams including Browns passed on him at least 8 times

Ditto here....drafted 1955 he came along right at the tale end of OGs career

Roger Staubach....drafted in the 10th round by the Cowboys....all other NFL teams including Browns passed on him at least 9 times...due to military commitment.

Drafted 1964. Browns would win championship that year with a steady QB. Few teams looked to 5 years in the future. Gil Brandt and Landry knew what they were doing.

End of Frank Ryan's career, beginning of veteran Bill Nelsen's. Could have used a new developing QB Instead we got Phipps a year or so later.

Jim Plunkett....taken with #1 pick of the draft. Browns had shot at taking him.

Would have been better to wait a year instead of taking Phipps.

Joe Montana....taken with the 82d pick in the third round in 1979 draft. Ahead of him the Browns drafted Willis Adams, Lawrence Johnson, Sam Clapham, and James Ramey

Brian Sipe was in the prime of his career. It was not perceived that we could have used a QB like Joe for the next decade.

Joe Theisman....take with the 99th pick of the 1971 draft. Ahead of him the Browns chose Clarence Scott, Bo Cornell, Paul Staroba, Robert Pena

Had just taken Phipps. No need for a guy headed for Canada

Jim McMahon....taken with the 5th overall pick of the 1982 draft. That year the Browns drafted Chip Banks ahead of him with the #3 pick. (Art Schichter #4 by the Colts)

    Had Brian Sipe

Phil Simms.....taken with the 7th overall pick of the first round in 1979. The Browns had no shot at him. (but taken 75 picks ahead of Montana)

    Had Brian Sipe

Doug Williams....taken with the 17th pick of the 1978 draft. The Browns picked at #12 ahead of him and took LB Clay Matthews Jr.

    Had Brian Sipe

Jeff Hostetler...taken 59th overall in the third round of the 1984 draft. Browns chose DB Don Rogers and WR Bruce Davis ahead of him.

Took BK in the Supp draft later that year. No great loss really as while Hoss was steady, it was Giants defense that won their title for them.

Well, this was Bill Belichick's first year. The Browns had come off the disastrous 1990 season. While Bernie was still in at QB it was known that he was hurting....and that a replacement would eventually be needed. They went for Vinny for that in another year. While E-Rock was a good pick.....guess who had a hand in this draft: Mike Lombardi....director of Player Personnel....though he was serving under Ernie Accorsi.

We coulda used this guy, no?

John Elway....taken with the #1 overall pick of the 1983 draft. Browns had not shot at him.

Kurt Warner....Undrafted QB that came out in 1994. Every team in the league could have had him numerous times over.

    Everyone blew this one.

Everyone blew this one. What do you think the fate of the Browns would have been this past decade if they had just taken Brady instead of Spurgeon Wynn? What would Brady's fate have been? To suffer the same ignominy that all the other Browns QBs have suffered?

Brad Johnson....taken in the 9th round of the 1992 draft. All teams passed on him at least 8 times.

Peyton Manning....taken #1 overall in 1998 draft. Browns had no shot at him.

Eli Manning .....taken #1 overall in 2004 draft. Browns had no shot at him.

Ben Roethlisberger....taken #11 overall in the 2004 draft. Browns chose TE Kellen Winslow with the #6 pick ahead of him.

    See below

Drew Brees.....taken with the #32 pick (second round) of the 2001 draft. Browns took Big Money Gerard Warren ahead of him with the #3 draft pick that year.....and one pick after Brees took Quincy Morgan.

2001....the Browns were still invested in Tim Couch.

Aaron Rodgers....taken with the #24 pick in the 2005 draft. Browns took Braylon Edward with the #3 pick that year.

Combine '04 and '05....Obviously either BR or ARod would have been a better choice than the semi-bust receivers we took.

Blame: Butch Davis ran the 2004 draft. Phil Savage the 2005 draft. Fucking fuck.

Who knew right....that our two first round picks including a QB would turn out so awful....and that a short third round QB would be the cream of the crop.

So let the second guessing begin. The ones I highlighted in red are the ones I feel that the Browns missed on and could have had. Some of these are guys everyone got wrong....but there were about a half dozen where if the Browns had been smarter could have really improved themselves.

BBecause the Brown's actually believe that they've had a team ready to fairly evaluate qbs. Build a real team then aqb will present themselves. Not the other way around.

  • yeah qb should be the last piece of a team build (right behind wr, lol) but it'd be nice to be able to pick the right one......

I am an advocate of not worrying about taking a QB this year because:

    A. I don't think there really are many good ones out there

    B. I think at this point the team needs to set its priorities on putting the biggest baddest OL and DL or LB in the game on the field.

Games can be won in the trenches (while still needing skill players).

    Totally agree.

  • of course the Browns eventually did have Trent Dilfer certainly within his prime. I guess it's not all the quarterback huh?

Dilfer was not in his prime here by no means. In fact after he left here, he only played in 7 more games in his career with SFO, then retired.

Jeff Garcia had more in his tank after he left the Browns than Dilfer. He played 6 more years with 5 different teams. He had one more decent year with Tampa Bay. He was really the ultimate system QB. Take him out of the WCO and he was lost. His good years were under WCO systems. He would have fit here a lot better under Holmgren and Shurmur than he did with Butch Davis and Chudzinski who was his OC the year he was here.

he was drafted by Baltimore correct? How many years was he in the league before we acquired him?

    WSS

  • Ok I looked it up. He's been in the league 10 years.

Weren't you telling me Peyton Manning would have taken the Browns to the playoffs or Super Bowl?

    WSS

Dilfer was in his 12th year when he played for the Browns. He retired after his 13th season. He was drafted by Tampa Bay where he spent much of his time. He only spent one single year in Baltimore.....but he just so happened to win the Super Bowl that year.

He was spent when he got to the Browns....and truthfully, while he did actually have that one good partial year with the Ratbirds, he was not overall a very good QB. One service tracked him as having a career comparable to the likes of Chris Miller, Wade Wilson, Rodney Peete, Bill Kenney, Mike Livingston, Bill Munson. In other words whenever the proposition is stated that a "team can win a SB with a mediocre QB....Trent Dilfer is the guy everyone points to (or Brad Johnson).

If the Browns had Peyton Manning as their QB this year, 2014.....yes I think they could have made the playoffs. I don't know about winning the SB but they could have possibly gotten a playoff spot.

    Quarterbacks matter.

Not necessarily. I think QB is the biggest factor. I also think they have a better WR corps. Would have to do a unit by unit, player by player comparison of the rest of both teams....but I think it would be close enough otherwise.

While I am not saying it....I am saying that QB is by far the biggest factor that makes the difference between the two teams. They certainly could have slight advantages in some areas (and slight advantages can make a world of difference)....but their QB edge is quite enormous.

Gipper told me he believes the Browns would have gone to the playoffs if we had Peyton Manning at the helm.

We did not and they did. So I asked him if he thought the Broncos and the Browns equal except for quarterback. Not quite understanding the outrage to that statement. Simmer down boy!

    WSS

  • Also if I'm not mistaken, & I could be, the Gipper feels that the Cleveland Browns are a superior team to the Pittsburgh Steelers except for the quarterback position.
