The Drive and The Fumble

This was on TV here? Damn, missed that, what channel?

No comparison.
The Drive was a slo-mo train wreck... you could see it coming. It left me sad.
The Fumble was a liver shot you never saw coming.
Gaping hole to a lead capping a frantic, fantastic, 2nd-half comeback and then an arm is stuck out, the ball is on the ground and I am on the floor... literally.
When the hole opened I jumped out of my chair...
Redemption! The Drive avenged!
When the ball came out, I hit the floor.
It was devastating.
I was numb.

The DRIVE was not the worst thing ever. Elway's Drive only tied the game. It was Bernie Kosar who single-handedly lost that game.
You go ahead and watch the film. The Browns WON the toss, and got the ball first. Kosar, who was great at coming from behind, was, IMHO a total coward when he had a lead or the game was tied. If you watch the film you will see the Denver players making fun of Kosar and chanting over and over " he's playing not to lose -we're going to win, he's playing not to lose"!
Kosar was a jackoff and a coward that day. I don't want to hear your bullshit about Marty, Marty coached a great game and the Browns were the better team. You can't blame the D for being gassed on the Drive. Marty had nothing to do with this shit.
I hear all the time about Bernie being the smartest QB in football, and how his audible skills were better than anyone else. Well, I don't give a shit what plays Marty sent out to him, Kosar was faggot that day. He dropped his pants, bent over and asked Elway to cornhole him. Elway didn't deflate the football. That game was a heartbreaker, but it was Kosar's to win. It was his opportunity of a lifetime; a defining moment.
Kosar could have elevated himself to the level of Marino, Fouts, Stabler, Elway, Staubach and many other greats. Instead? Around the NFL fans think of him in the class of Testeverde, O'Donell, and Bledsoe.
"He's playing not to lose" _ That is Kosar's legacy.
You are so full of crap. That game was the turning point for Elway. He wasn't considered a good qb until that game. He exploited Marty's prevent defense and came from behind to win it. Kosar was in his 2nd season, and at the time was considered by all experts to be the best qb in the game. As it turned out, of course, Elway achieved greatness, while Bernie played great at times, but never became elite. How can you blame Kosar for conservative play calling? Lindy Ifante was calling the plays. Kosar may have had the ability to change plays....or maybe not. Anybody who watched Kosar's career would have to say that he certainly played more reckless...always going for the big pass play...than conservative, overall.

OK, he didn't do precisely what he needed to do in OT to win. Sure....but you are full of shit about the rest of his performance in that game.
He had us up by a TD with 5 minutes to play.....with the Broncos on their two yard line.
But the prevent defense prevented the Browns from winning......after they had shut Elway down pretty well all game long being aggressive, they became passive.
London Brown.....do not listen to what Ghoolie says here, because his views are skewed by bitterness.
And yes, Karlis missed. I have seen it a hundred times. Had the goal posts been higher he would have missed wide left....or his kick would have plunked off the goal post.

During the loss to Denver referred to as 'the drive' I was stationed in Okinawa, so I was working. During the loss the next year, was stationed in New York. Had quite a few brewskies. I cut a fart when it happened, and didn't realize it was a wet one until later.

I was mid 20's.....and remember both all too well.....
People like to talk about the "prevent defense" that cost us....which I agree with.....hell, we had the BEST FUCKING PAIR OF CB's ON THE PLANET!!!!.....TRUST THEM TO DO WHAT THEY DID ALL YEAR GODDAMMIT!!!!!!!!
Should have blitzed the shit out of Elway and trusted those DB's to shut things down....Instead we rushed 3 and sat back..argghhh!!!
And Karlis did miss....

I was 6 7 and 9 respectively when the browns blew those games watching with my uncles who were and are huge browns fans and I more or less credit the browns for my cynical outlook on life

I was at "The Drive," and yes, the FG was wide left. I remember this shit like it was yesterday.
Prevent defense- Marty took Puzzoli off the field after a sack, to force a 3rd & 19 (the only Brown to touch Elway all damn day), and somehow a hand off to Herman Fontenot on 3rd & 2 on the Browns only possession of OT lead to the loss (we had Mack & Byner, remember). I remember how silent the stadium was- nobody said a word to each other until we got near the old Fagan's Bar in the Flats.
The Browns were the best team in the NFL in 1986. They came into the playoffs on a 5 game winning streak, but played poorly the week before against the NY Jets. Mark Gastineau basically gave the Browns new life when he cheap-shotted Kosar with about 2:30 to go, and Bernie brought the Browns back from a 20-10 deficit to force OT.
The Fumble was more painful, as the Browns erased a 24-3 deficit. Byner might of had the game of his life that day, but is only remembered for that strip fumble. The bottom line is the Broncos had the Browns number, still do (I think they are 5-19 in the all time series vs Denver).

I was 12/13 for The Drive/The Fumble. I remember it for sure. During the Drive, when Elway had to start back at the 2, I was like "no problem". But they kept moving the chains and I remember thinking "why can't they stop them??". It was a slo-mo train wreck. The Fumble I took harder. Who didn't, after dealing with the Drive just the year previous? I mean to lose like that two times in a row during AFC Championship game?? I think I pretty much sat back quietly in my bedroom for the rest of the day. I also remember afterwards hearing caused the fumble...Castille...and hating him with a passion. You can bet your ass I was bitterly happy when the Broncos lost all three Super Bowls, particularly those lopsided losses. I also wondered how the Browns would've done against those same teams. No doubt better than that to say the least.
I hate Elway, I hate the Broncos, so Peyton would you just leave the team so I can hate them to 100% full capacity again?

i would not call bernie a coward, however i do believe if kosar was calling the plays on that overtime possesion, he fucked up...i totally agree, i knew when it was 3rd down and he handed the ball to fotenot and fontenot got blasted the game was over....i could not believe kosar did not pass, it was his moment and he failed..i cannot recall the first 2 plays before the 3rd down screwup...however if marty called the play from the sidelines, then it was marty's fault and not bernies...never heard anything about who called that boneheaded play...

I always liked Marty but he got treated even worse by the Chargers when they fired him after an 14-2 regular season record.
