Why I believe Connor Shaw will be our Russell Wilson
-
I like Connor, but after watching him play 4qtrs in the NFL, it was pretty obvious that he lacks the arm strength to play the position as a starter...... He has the toughness and heart though, I'll give the kid that.
Ditto... plus straight speed is not the comparison to make. Agility and acceleration are key.
Shaw: - 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.33 3-Cone Drill: 7.07 10 Yrd Dash: 1.64
Wilson: 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.09 3-Cone Drill: 6.97 10 Yrd Dash: 1.55
and just for grins...
Johnny: 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.03 3-Cone Drill: 6.75 10 Yrd Dash: 1.63
Points made on Connor's dedication/ professionalism are indisputable... as, IMO, is the case for the team having been on the rise. Whether that rise can be sustained given the coaching changes and other "events" is TBD, but I like our odds.
I'll only add that the OP deserved better than the first response. Disagree if you like, but to disparage a one-off is not necessary.
It seems clear form recent posts that Ghoulie is suffering a relapse.

Yeah like I said, If Manziel had his athleticism with Shaw's mental game, we'd have a winner.. Unfortunately that won't happen so...

Didn't take great arm strength to beat Seattle. Most the passes I saw were dink and dunk.

While this is true, there are very, very few teams that have trio of 6'2 CB's that are comfortable leaving them on an island in press inviting you to attempt to throw over the top.
The horizontal passing game is very critical in beating Seattle. However, there are teams, such as the Browns, that have corners whom can take away those quick throws and slants with their own lateral burst. This is when its necessary to have a QB able to put the ball over the top.

Wow.... really? Hey Doctor Franken-fuck, while you are creating fantasy bullshit, how about fixing it so Westside Steve has no facial hair, grows a nice set of tits and a pussy? That way, because we are buds, I may be able to get laid once before I die.
What the fuck kind of a post is this? First you talk about your vision of Shaw metamorphosing from a puny, shit QB into Russel WIlson, and then, I suppse after you realized how idiotic that notion is, you flipped into pining for Manziel to become your dream girl.
Dude, you are like the loser of a television game show who has to pick a date with either Whoopie Goldberg or Oprah Winfrey, and want to talk to the girl at the make up counter first to see if she can help.
Conner Shaw is shit. What part of that doens't penetrate your bone head?
God bless you

Shaw is a gamer. Decent backup at best
We need a top QB and we're a good team.
The reason Seattle is OK with 100% undrafteds at WR is because of the OL, QB, and RB. We have 2 of those 3.

They also have depth. We can't afford to lose a starter on OL or DL.
-
Both OL's had 2,3 starters out nearly every game the second half of the year. The depth of Seattle and NE is pretty impressive actually, especially when you remember NE trading away Mankins to TB for.. a 3rd string TE, a bag of balls, and a Juggs machine.

During the draft process, Wilson was highly touted as a good QB who had all the skills, but lacked the height/size to succeed in the NFL. He was projected as a mid-round QB based on good character and ability and was taken in the 3rd round...
Shaw was undrafted...
I see no comparison.

If Russell Wilson was 6'2 there was a good chance he was drafted top 5 in 2012. Height was only downfall

Going back to the thread title: I think the best we could hope for is that Connor Shaw turns out like the guy we took in the 13th round 43 years ago. (kee-riste...has it been that long). A little short, not the strongest arm...but hopefully with the same gutsiness.
The one thing they don't have in common though is their looks.
Brian Sipe was a good looking guy:

Connor Shaw.....mmmm....not so much

-
Andrew Hawkins the next Marvin Harrison. I have no empirical proof just thought it would be awesome.

The mullet is clearly photoshopped. Still funny though.
I think that if any quarterback out of the 2014 class has a chance, it would be Shaw. But that means very little. You don't plan to find a Wilson. You don't try and draft a Brady. You get take a risk and get lucky.
Shaw and Wilson have similar NFL scouting reports, however Shaw is more injury-prone and, because of which, has a weaker arm. But both are mechanical QB's who work very hard to understand their position and have good football instincts, a generally calm demeanor and are vocal leaders.
Shaw:
Fine touch and accuracy. Very good mobility and movement in the pocket. Tough and gritty competitor. Produced a rare 24-1 TD-INT ratio as a senior and cut down on mental mistakes that characterized his play earlier in his career. Workaholic, gym rat. Extremely determined. Vocal presence. Smart and instinctive -- is the son of a coach and understands football concepts. Plays through pain. Has a 27-5 career starting record, has rallied his team to victory off the bench and carries a calm, confident, poised field presence. Mentally and physically tough. Three-year starter in the SEC.
WEAKNESSES Is undersized and injury-prone with multiple foot and shoulder injuries. Played in a non-traditional, gimmicky offense featuring many simple reads and has a tendency to birddog his primary target. Operated heavily out of the shotgun, and mechanics will require seasoning. Average arm strength -- does not generate velocity on the move and comes up short on the deep ball. Can be too jittery vs. pressure and quick to tuck and run. Was the only passer who could not bust past 50 miles per hour on the radar gun at the combine (very marginal ball speed).Wilson:
STRENGTHS Wilson is an accurate passer. He is a very mechanical quarterback who is consistent in his drop step and thoroughly understands how to move within the pocket and evade when the pocket collapses. He is an athlete and can torque his body to make any sort of throw on the run, and is accurate in this setting. He is a born signal caller who shows command of the offense. He has the arm strength to make the deep throws and the touch to put it on a receiver in stride. He is effective when scrambling and is a classic play extender. WEAKNESSES
Wilson's height will be his biggest inhibitor at the next level and the largest reason for his late-round value. It remains to be seen if he can throw effectively from the pocket at the next level.
I'd love to see Shaw get a legitimate shot this offseason. He's essentially everything Manziel is, except less of a backyard footballer and more of an actual student of the game. He's equally mobile, yet climbs the pocket more efficiently than Manziel. He's equally statured, just an inch taller. He's got the college production and was proven to be more efficient in his limited time than Manziel was in his.
People shitting on this idea are, generally, the same idiots clamoring for Mariota ( I say that with absolutely no research. That is purely a blanket assumption on my end). Shaw had solid-to-good production from a solid-to-good team in the best conference in college football. He never had any off-the-field issues. He was at some times a comeback kid and other times a full-on weapon from start to finish. You can ask any true Gamecocks fan, they were never out of the running with Shaw at the helm. There was always a chance with him behind center.
If Shaw were 6'4, he'd have been a first or (more likely) second round prospect. From a scouting perspective, he's your best shot at striking gold. None of his issues had anything to do with his mental makeup or his production.

"does not generate velocity on the move and comes up short on the deep ball" I liked what I saw of Shaw- but IMHO- he's a younger version of Hoyer.
Actually Shaw is the anti-Manziel.

Would not they both have those same characteristics in common with Sipe? The question is whether or not they can show the leadership and consistency of Sipe.
Or do you think that a guy with similarities to Sipe's skill set......as perhaps we think both Hoyer and Shaw may have.....cannot make it in today's NFL?

Hey don't worry, we still have Tyler Thigpen on the roster.
