So you would not do it within your own family if there were a risk of that particular disease?
I don't have kids but if I wanted some and I can eliminate the risk of some horrid disease or physical deformity I wouldn't hesitate to use scientific methods to do so. If, in fact, I'm reading that correctly.

The issue is science is strange and scary. Can we really trust these "experts"?

The issue here is that some might see it as a step towards 'designer babies' - where you can choose hair colour eye colour etc. While I'm not convinced that's a bad thing, I can see why people would be reluctant for it to become commonplace. However, that viewpoint does betray a lack of understanding of the actual science here -there's nothing in the mitochondrial DNA that can be used to determine anything like that, mitochondrial DNA is used only to determine how energy is dealt with, along with cell reproduction/destruction. None of the mitochondrial DNA is used in determining aesthetic characteristics of the baby.
Outside of that, I'm not sure what objection people might have?

We actually have no federal law prohibiting partial birth abortion for the purpose of hair color selection.
That seems more barbaric than DNA tinkering.
