Also I call bullshit on blaming Christianity for slavery. Christianity probably had the biggest part in ending it.

When did he blame Christianity for slavery?

    How did Christianity end slavery?

if you didn't listen to it then go buy yourself a clue.

  • Steve you are not 100% right\wrong on christianity playing a part of ending slavery, while there was abolitionists(many used their religious view as reasons) in the North there was equal people in the South using the Bible as justification. The biggest parts where the change to industrialism and our own beliefs in freedom.

Also do you feel the KKK(and groups of that sort), which hold Christianity as one of their principals, to be recent enough for examples?

Because the Ku Klux Klan is fucked up in just about every comparison to mainstream Christianity.

Do you blame Osiris for the act of Isis?

No, but I also don't blame all muslims(as some have done) for the acts of ISIS either, just trying to show what he was referring to with the slavery and jim crow eras, because lets just say the KKK did some very f'ed up stuff during the early 1900's until probably the 1960's.

I'd say they are still fucked up today, so what? Also a big so what do people who blame all Muslims for Isis.

Also slavery was a common practice across the world since Roman times and beyond. Since before the birth of Christ.

"Obama equates extremism from one religion with extremism from others"

If you need to go back hundreds of years to equate extremism you are an idiot. I don't think all Muslims are extremists by any means but I don't give a fuck about the Crusades.

Why should millenia of history be ignored? The point he's trying to make is that they're not doing it because they're Islamic. It's a valid thing to say because this country has a significant number of people like this

And it's pretty widespread, even on this forum, take a look at some of the posts from Walter.

I think he's just bringing that up because you claim that Christianity ended slavery.

  • A well walter is neither a Christian nor a man with the balls to back up his ass hole posts.

B if you don't believe slavery was around for eons before Christianity I can't help you.

And if you don't believe that Christians and free thinkers played a major role in ending the practice...

  • For myself I hereby I apologize for the Crusades, slavery, the plague and the way the neanderthals treated Cro Magnons.

(and I will take that back if I'm ever running for office and there is a substantial Neanderthal vote)

    B. I don't think anyone is claiming that Christian either created slavery or where the only ones with slavery, slavery was around long before christ(ancient egypt and greece are both known for having slaves), but christians like many cultures rationalized for a long period of time it could exist(over a thousand years). I was also not claiming that Christianity didn't play a role in abolitionist movement. However I place more weight that on the Free Thinkers of the time then onto religion.

Its not a matter of wanting an apology its a matter of telling people don't point the finger at islam for these tragedies that are being committed, point it at those who warp religion to this. He used references to his own religion where people justified horrific things in the name of religion, as a way to remind people to be vigilant and to not let the hate groups gain and to keep people humble.

Thanks for pointing these things out. Not to completely derail this thread, but did you write this? 🙂

  • Actually I think it's mostly a way to keep a certain group of people in an uproar. Today I believe we feign shock and outraged over slavery. It's just something the world used to do. My modern day sensibilities tell me it's no good so we don't do it anymore.

It annoys me that people like Obama use it as a cudgel for political gain but it doesn't surprise me. (yes yes yes it's not the only issue and he's not the only one).

But for those who enjoy attacking Christianity we'd do better to attack Osiris whose people made us look like pikers when it came to slavery.

(I mean seriously, his people have the pyramids and the Sphinx and what do we have? Some bed sheets and blue jeans!

For the keeping a certain group of people in an uproar, I don't think in this case it was Obama's intention if you actually listen\read the full speech it is used as I said in the last post to keep people humble and remind us of how people could warp our own religion to fit there ideals. I do agree though certain people on the left(jackson, sharpton espcially) tend to play the race card to often that it loses its impact.

Well one could argue that with the increase finances and growth from the slave trade the US was able to gain independence, so there is always that.....

You could. You could also make the point that had we not abolished it season tickets for professional sports would be much more affordable.
