GOP Bill would require photo ID to use Food Stamps
-
That being said, pretty much any form of ID requires a fixed address, which may present a big problem for some patrons of the food stamps (and voting booth).
-
excellent idea. As I've said before, however, I think every American should have positive identification backed up by DNA and retinal scan, all issued by the federal government. At least that way no one can cry that they are too poor do have an identification card...

You shouldn't be able to force people to present ID for things like voting and food stamps etc...*unless* the ID is issued centrally for free. I'm renewing my passport currently, it costs about £100. Ridiculous, but I'll pay it anyway because I travel - if I'm on food stamps, maybe it's not something I consider a necessity.

Isn't that's what I said? Issued by the federal government and bulletproof. I do think the complaints about voting rights because someone is too lazy or stupid to get a state issued ID are facetious but if the Fed passed them out that would solve that forney problem.

Plus if you are on food stamps, as you say, there are probably a lot of things you don't consider necessary. Responsibility, work, self-reliance etc.

It is what you said, yes, and I am in agreement in principle. However, the point about the full-time address remains an obstacle for a lot of people.
Cynical part:
I can see the 'noble intentions' but it's open to abuse from a party that requires a voter to have an up to date ID on it, including the full time address; a lot of people at the lower end of the social ladder, who would presumably lean democrat in general, might bounce around from address to address every few months, and the process for updating the ID might take a few months because of 'massive backlog' or 'technical hitches' etc, meaning they don't have a valid ID, and don't have a voting right. Yes, i'm more concerned about the right to vote than the free food thing.
I'm all for it, though I don't think it's entirely necessary, I just can't help but have some doubts as to a hidden agenda.
-
And in truth no one has a permanent address. But every US citizen should have a Social Security number that can be easily tied to the chip in his card.
Cynical part:
I think that most people who want to complain about privacy are probably trying to get away with something untoward.
Also that anyone who can't get his shit together well enough to scrape up some sort of identification is not the type of person I want making decisions through the vote. But at the very least if a US citizen chooses to sponge off the government you should at least be willing to tell us who you are. I mean think of all hundreds of places you and I are required to show identification.
(pS If you are too destitute to come up with any kind of identification then you're probably too poor to have cable TV and won't be able to hear al Sharpton screech about it in the first place.

I absolutely disagree that the only people who protest invasion of privacy are those with things to hide.
Most people have a permanent address. Some at the bottom of the ladder do bounce around from home to home. Also, you don't get to decide who votes and who doesn't based on economic circumstance - that's one of the basic tenets of free-world democracy, everybody gets a say, everybody gets represented. There are very few people who I would actually say get a vote (not many are found here) if we're being selective about 'the right type of voter'

A I did say most people, not everyone.
B I was being a little facetious about the permanent address. I no longer live in the prenatal unit of Aultman Hospital. I've probably lived in 20 places since then at least.

C I fully realize you can't stop people from voting on the basis of economic circumstances, even educational level. That's just my personal annoyance.
Like Henny Penny and who gets to help eat the bread...

How do you stop voting fraud? And how do you stop abusers of
the welfare system without rules?
Great, no ID and no address means you can vote anywhere you want,
as many places you want,
And illegals, they can vote and be on welfare, live in section eight housing,
and still eat at homeless outlets, and .....
vote liberal. That's what it really all comes down to. Political power for the liberals/progressives/utopian wingnuts...
-
This ID system, like Chris said, can be abused politically to keep certain people from voting. The right was most guilty of this last election. This was said to prevent voter fraud, which really isn't a big issue.
I also think its cynical (I'm fitting in!) to say every person that is on food stamps is lazy and stupid. Shit happens. You can't paint with that broad of a brush.

Fun ain't it?

If you want to be forcing people to have an ID(whether state or Fed) to use welfare, then it should be handed out when they sign up(or free of charge to get from a close title bureau).
If you want to tie it to voting then it should be 100% free(there should be no cost to vote).
The problem with most voting ID laws is they wait till 4 months before a major election to try and get these new rules out there and passed instead of passing them right after an election and giving people plenty of time to get the new ID's.

Ugh... Set up to get trolled again.
It was strongly implied. To a level higher than I believe is accurate. That's all I'm saying here

Still if you can't get your shit together to grab a free identification card you probably can't get your shit together to go vote.
It aint rocket science. And you need identification for a whole lot less meaningful activities that voting.

PS and why should it bother the left so badly? Maybe because people with cognitive skills barely above housepets are probably going to vote for...
Hmmmmm I wonder.

That's why it bothers the right, and why it's open to abuse, which is what bothers the left. It's about allowing everyone to vote, from ultra-conservative Arizona pastors wanting to stone faggots, to single mothers of seven who have never worked a day in their lives and live off the government.
-
so it only bothers you if crazy conservatives are allowed to vote? Or what exactly? Would it bother you if those crazed queer stoning masses were too stupid to find identification and therefore unable to vote?
also I'm guessing if you were smart enough to sign up for welfare you were smart enough to grab an ID card right?

I'm not sure how you weren't able to understand "It's about allowing everyone to vote" but ok. It doesn't bother me that crazy conservatives are allowed to vote because they are people, so they are allowed to vote (with a few exceptions). Their political ideologies might bother me, but their right to vote is inalienable.
I have a driving license, so no issue when signing up for welfare. You are required to have your national insurance number (like social security - this is issued to everyone at age 16); and some ID. Apparently, this can be passport, driving license, credit card, debit card, medical card, age ID card, work ID card, club membership card.
So, plenty of ways to get ID, not an issue for me.

Why this isn't already a law is beyond me.

It's a HARDSHIP, Die, don't you get it?
Why don't some states even make it necessary to show some form of ID before being allowed in the voting booth?
I suspect things such as Entitlements equaling votes has to get factored in somewhere.

A passport or food to eat????

You can't get a bank account, buy cigarettes/booze, enter a bar, etc. without a photo ID. You can't tell me that people go without an ID for any of those things but still have proper documentation to even receive government assistance.
You should have to present ID to vote and to use the food stamp card. Voter fraud is a big issue in the coal field counties in WV every election.
