Would you rather have an elite TE or elite WR?

  • How about both? Several teams in history have had combination HOF WRs and HOF TEs:

Biletnikoff and Casper, Berry and Mackey, Joiner and Winslow.

Plus think of the Cowboys, Irvin and Novacek

I am sure there are others.

  • The hurdle? Really? Maxx only looks "elite" in contrast to the general view of the rest of this year's TE class.

As for the newfound love for JM's upside JAF reported... given the depths of his actual performance to date, his upside had to increase greatly.

Meanwhile in response to the OP... I'll take the elite TE. They are rarer and create far greater issues for Defenses.

If we drafted Maxx Williams I would be estatic. He's the only elite TE in this years draft

His leaping ability and athleticism is freakish. He reminds me of a less strong but more athletic Gronk.

I'd have NO PROBLEM taking him at #19 and addressing WR in the 2nd or 3rd.

Why does he compare to Gronk? He plays nothing like him. Not to mention he's inferior in size and strength (two large aspects of Gronk's game).

He plays closer to a slightly more athletic Dallas Clark. Even then, he doesn't possess the body control that Clark does. Comparing him to Gronk misleads everyone.

  • For me I'd take the elite TE. On any given play you can draw the attention and threaten the coverage of a backer, safety and corner depending on the route concepts and coverage. Plus, its much harder to bracket a TE split off the line than a receiver out wide. You force coverage to crowd the middle of the field where its already a scary place for young or average QB's to throw and you open up the outside receivers that much more.

We could probably wait later than #19 to take Maxx.

i'm surprised you're not touting funchess...besides a true TE like maxx williams, funchess kinda falls into that hybrid mode with his size.

Well, Maxx is more of a traditional TE than Funchess.

You could probably eventually move Funchess to full time TE, but it would take time.

Funchess is best served on a team that can utilize his hybrid skill set. Idk if we're that team.

  • I just think we might be going after both in this draft. Thoughts?

    Would you rather have a Gates/Gronk/Witten or a Green/Megatron/Fitzgerald?

Well, Defensive Gurus like Bill Belichick always look for big, fast, ball-catching TEs over WRs.

Remember how he, supposedly, pulled the phone out of the wall when the Jets drafted TE Kyle Brady before the Browns?

He then drafted Gronk and Hernandez the same year and used them at the same time.

Sounds like big, mobile TEs are more difficult for Defenses to contain than do WRs.

The Pats won the SB with a couple of UDAs, etc. among their TE corps.

Defensive gurus and teams like the Pats with a couple of UDAs in the TE corps win Super Bowls when they have Tom Brady at Quarterback.

Got Tom Brady at QB? No. Got Aaron Rodgers? No. The rest don't matter.

Gip, you have to get your head out of your ass when it comes to BB.

HOF Coach. Perhaps the best of all time.

Two winning seasons and 5 losing seasons without Tom Brady. I think we know who has their head up their ass.

If we were choosing sides for a pickup game (where picking coaches and players would be part of the deal), I will take Brady and give you BB all day every day.....and whip you all day every day.

  • who was quarterback for most of those losing seasons again?

    WSS

  • The point is: It doesn't matter how good your WR are until your QB, OL, and DL are dominating.. because you'll lose.

When your QB, OL, and DL are dominating, it still doesn't matter how good your WR are.. because you'll win.

So, why bother with WR at all? Keep drafting OL/DL/QB early.

Besides... think about it. EVEN IF you get a great WR, he's leaving at the end of that rookie deal unless you get that great QB. And if you get that great QB, you'll find that you don't need a great WR to win.

  • one of the best duo:

s sharp and r smith for the Broncos in the 90's came to mind for some reason

    Gipper started the straying thread

btw, I'd rather have a tight end sized wide receiver

  • I thought the thread was about WR vs TE...

  • It is....(about to be)(again)

I'd rather have an elite TE, than an elite WR.....

  • Tight end because it's important for blocking and short and intermediate passes. With an average or below average quarterback you are going to lose the opportunity for the long pass anyway. (a great one will do a good job with a wide receiver or TE but...)

Now you're just being silly, Gip.

This thread was about TEs and WRs and I pointed out that Defensive Guru BB has a history of drafting big TEs. Therefore, I surmise they must be harder for a Defense than WRs.

Brady has NOTHING to do with this.

You continue to take swipes at BB. Jealous? Probably, IMHO

You are simply being petty because (my guess) BB cut your favorite boy Bernie.

  • I can't believe we're having this discussion still.

Both the TE and WR have shit for wins without QB and the OL to block for the run game.

Evans and Jackson were both good fantasy producers last year.. how many playoff games did TB win?

NO won their SB because they had a great OL and a moderately useful D.. they had everything but the OL recently and haven't been back to the playoffs.

  • QB

  • I'd take Calvin over Gronk

  • I think an elite WR might be better for a good running game, especially if he requires double coverage. And I am assuming the tight end is an elite catcher which means usually they are crap blockers. If the tight end can block well, and is a great receiver then I would take the tight end.
