For the religious - a question
-
Based on how it was translated, how its been edited, and how you interpret it... you could probably make the Bible fit into almost any set of reasoning. This is what I was saying earlier. More scientific knowledge will come about that will debunk what people originally thought holy books said, and those religious people will just change their interpretation.
If you believe the Earth is very old, do you accept the scientific theory of evolution?
Absolutely not. There are things clearly revealed in the bible and there are things that are symbolic and God reveals what He wants to. I believe what happened in the garden was symbolic, that it was more than just eating a forbidden fruit. The book of Revelation is full of images from a man who got a glimpse into the future and described what he saw in the technology and terms of the day. When you understand the bible it is all about Jesus. He is either who He said He was or He wasn't. I want to believe Him that He is seated at the right hand of the Father, what He said about heaven is true and that He has prepared a place for us, that He dealt with the sin problem and He is God who became man. Psalm 22 written hundreds of years before Christ describes the crucifixion better than the disciples. Isaiah 53 describes how the Messiah would come and be rejected by His own people and he would die for the sins of others. The answers are in the bible but a skeptic will never see it.

Absolutely not to what? Evolution? Something else I said? Just checking...
Nostrodamus also predicted a lot of things if you interpret his work loosely enough, which is the point I'm trying to make. What is an example of one of these predictions by the Bible?
If you want to believe the general teachings of the Bible, be a good person, respect your parents, etc, then more power too you. We need me people thinking like that. But when you take an old book as a literal account of history, and you think it is the divine word of god.... then it gets a little crazy in my mind. When you immediately reject the idea of life elsewhere in the Bible, because it would invalidate your religious beliefs, then we start showing the true damage caused by religion.
A few questions, if you don't mind:
1) What makes your religion correct, as opposed to any other? What makes you know you're right? You could have been born in India, and believe something completely different. You would then believe something very different from what the Bible tells you, but you'd still think you're correct. What makes Christianity "right"?
2) What are you views on Mormonism or Scientology? If you think they're just ridiculous, what makes them any more ridiculous than your beliefs? Longevity?
3) The show Ancient Aliens shows a bunch of interpretations of the Bible (and other religious works) which seem to support an "ancient astronaut theory". What makes those interpretations incorrect?
You don't need to answer all of these questions, or any really, but I think you may be one of the most devout Christians on this board. I am just trying to peak inside your brain and figure out why you think the way you do. I mean, I imagine it was because you were raised that way, but I guess I am looking to see how you can still justify it.

And around and around we go.
A likely answer...Yes, belief in God/Bible and evolution need not be mutually exclusive.

No, they do not need to be. Centuries ago, that statement would be blasphemy in the eyes of the church. As our scientific knowledge has grown, and religious believes have shrunk more and more into the corner, they've needed to revise their message to stay compatible. Evolution is a scientific fact, if you try to push a religion that 100% goes against this, you are going to seem pretty crazy and lose potential followers. So, over time, the interpretation of the Bible became more loose ("oh, it's not a literal 6 days") and this allowed for religion to bend and try to mesh into emerging scientific theories. Again, this is kind of what I have been saying for awhile. If some new, groundbreaking evidence comes about that directly contradicts someones literal interpretation of the Bible, that interpretation will just change. Religion will continue its decline, but it will go down swinging.

I will get back to you on some other things you brought up but on why I believe Christianity over other religions such as Buddhists, Hinduism, etc.. the difference is the resurrection. Buddha is dead and buried but Christianity is different with a risen Savior. The disciples witnessed it and when you read the bible they were scared to death when Jesus was crucified but something happened that changed all that. They witnessed the miracle.

I'll try my best to not sound like an asshole here, but...
You believe in Christianity because its old book talks about the main character coming back to life. Then some guys from thousands of years ago backed it up.
Doesn't that seem a little ridiculous?

I don't think so.
Read all about it...from arguably the oldest Christian denomination.

Religion will continue its decline, but it will go down swinging.
And the religion left standing will be Leftism. Europe has already fallen. Clearly the U.S. has put the most resistance to leftism, but what makes me abhor libfucks is that any religious resistance to leftism and the religious are the ones viewed as the "extremists".
Seems the more secular society becomes, the more laws the government needs to impose. It was once that Judeo/Christianity provided checks on behaviors apart from the law. It was that which molded society. Today it is Leftism that molds society. The more laws the better.

So? How does that affect you if that is what a person chooses to believe?
After all, gay marriage doesn't harm or affect those that don't believe in it. Isn't that what you guys always say?

That was so wrong cause that dude really is brilliant. But fuck i'm gonna be laughing for days.

The main character walked the earth doing things only someone with supernatural ability could do, said before it happened he would be killed and three days later rise from death and then it happened just like he said it would. I don't see the ridiculousness of believing in someone like that at all. What is ridiculous to me is not believing.

Sure, and if that superhuman existed, I might listen to him too. All you have though are stories. Stories that have been edited, translated, and reinterpreted over centuries.
David Blaine could have walked around back in those times and people would have acted like he was a god. Should we take the stories for face value?
At the end of the day, the only evidence is stories from an old book, and I'm sorry, but that isn't very convincing.

That whole rising from the dead thing has me puzzled?
We, as a society, celebrate Christmas,( Jesus's birth ) way more then we celebrate Easter, ( Jesus's resurrection )
To my knowledge, EVERY person, to ever take a breath on this planet, was born, but only Jesus came back from the dead.
Shouldn't Easter be the bigger celebration?

I agree. The resurrection is at the heart of Christianity. The cross leads to the empty tomb.

Who?
I don't see month long festivities at Easter. If anything it's6 weeks of fasting on stuff you don't like anyway.
Sure people give up things for lent, but most give up things they don't use to begin with.
Seems to me the Jesus lovers want to get a great deal on a LCD HDTV at "Black Friday" then celebrate "GOOD FRIDAY"
By the way, how did Easter, the resurecction of Christ, become associated with colored eggs and chololate bunny's?

It's CHOCOLATE and lay off my chocolate bunny, dammit.

it is actually - the church praise and worship preceeding the message each Sunday
are just that - a celebration to our promise from the King!
and the good part is that it hasnt been hijacked with marketing to go shop....

Perhaps the greatest change caused by the resurrection was in the character of the disciples. They had previously been timid, afraid, and depressed after witnessing the arrest and suffering of Jesus. But after His resurrection they became aggressive, bold, and full of joy.
Peter is a prime example. He was the one who had earlier denied the Lord to a lowly servant girl. But after the resurrection, he stood in the temple courts defying the very men who put Jesus on the cross (Acts 4:20).
When you observe the post-resurrection disciples, you see that they had life! Their circumstances didn’t matter. They had joy in the midst of suffering and peace in the midst of turmoil. Nothing could take away their passion arising from the everlasting life they’d received from Christ.
The disciples believed so much in the resurrection that they gave their lives to sharing the news. The first to die was James the brother of John, who was killed by the sword upon the order of King Herod (Acts 12:1–2). Church tradition holds that John miraculously survived being put into a cauldron of boiling water, then later was exiled to the island of Patmos; Peter was crucified in Rome upside down; Matthew was slain by a sword in a distant city in Ethiopia; James the son of Alphaeus was thrown from a pinnacle of the temple, then beaten to death with a blacksmith’s tool; Philip was hanged against a pillar at Hierapolis in Phrygia; Bartholomew was skinned alive; Andrew was bound to a cross — and preached to his persecutors until he died; Thomas was run through with a lance in the East Indies; Jude was shot to death with arrows; Matthias was first stoned and then beheaded; Mark died in Alexandria in Egypt after being cruelly dragged through the city.
Let me ask you: Would you have died for a lie? Would these disciples have endured such persecution for a dead man?
No. They saw the risen Lord—then gave their very lives in service to Him. They were no longer afraid of death because they’d found the true meaning of life. They were transformed, for they were living in resurrection life.

Would you drink poison because you believed a guy who told you he knew heaven was on a comet? I wouldn't but people did. Sacrificing your life to a cause does not mean that cause was real. They very well could have believed it in their heads but that certainly doesn't prove the validity of it by giving their lives.THE DISCIPLES ULTIMATE SACRIFICE
