Bubble players....who stays or goes....

The Browns Board
122 16 4.1k
  • Any and all of the people you mention could be candidates for deletion from the Browns roster. But....as noted....before letting them go, be certain that you have an upgrade in their position.

You have named several people who may be backups, but who are contributors on special teams. Their replacements must have that attribute as well.

  • Yes, I understand we have to wait to see who makes it, who we draft, etc....but Im curious if you think any of these guys help decide who we draft....cause Im seeing a lot of projected needs that dont make sense(to me, I know) and other areas of need not even being mentioned.....

Example 1: People keep mocking OT's in the early rounds, yet we have 2 good starters and(apparently) a very good back up in Bowie(make it 2 good back ups if you count Bito).....so, I say we dont draft tackle and dont even need one....see?

Example 2: Conversely, NO one is mocking any Safeties to our team, and based upon the backups, Id say it was a bigger than OT....so why go OT over S, when we lost our only reliable back up in Leonard....

Example 3: Hughes, Rubin and Taylor missed most of the season with injuries, so we had very little production from the interior D line. We have now got them back and added Starks. So, with Hughes healed and Taylor back(and slated at NT) is that really our #1 need?....or do we just like Shelton?

Example 4: We have Mingo, Kruger and Solomon at OLB......thats it.....no more......and Solomon has done nothing in 4 years in the league.....so, how could OLB NOT be one of the very top spots.....???....I think we need 2, actually.....

Example 5: WR is 4 deep with starter quality in Bowe, Hawkins, Gabriel & Hartline......so is it really a "top" need or just an area that folks want to see some flash.... ???

So....yeah....AFTER the draft there will be plenty to talk on....but Im thinking some of these guys will end up being the reason Farmer makes some "unexpected" picks...Like DB's and OLB's earlier.......and OL and WR later(if at all)....

Ive been pushing edge rushers, safeties and OLB as my higher priorities.....and wouldn't be surprised to see some of the predictions of DL and OL falling back slightly in the pick order.....especially if the monsters arent there to pick

  • Way too soon for this... but I'll look at it again after the draft maybe...

I'll add... currently there are 70 players under contract. We have 10 draft picks... We are allowed to bring in a total of 90 players for training camp... Some the players that were listed on the OP might not even make it that far, as they may be sacrificed for younger talent...

I have to say, this is the most talented pre-draft roster we have had as long as I can remember. We already have enough talent to field a competetive 53-man roster, and we haven't even drafted... gives some reason for optimism...

Because there is pretty much a consensus among analysts that the crop of safeties in this year's draft is terrible. Most say there is not a single one worthy in Round 1

Example 3: Hughes, Rubin and Taylor missed most of the season with injuries, so we had very little production from the interior D line. We have now got them back and added Starks. The failure to stop the run is the issue. Even if it seems like we may have bodies in place the team may still feel that it needs to shore up one of its weakest points.

Example 4: We have Mingo, Kruger and Solomon at OLB......thats it.....no more......and Solomon has done nothing in 4 years in the league.....so, how could OLB NOT be one of the very top spots.....???....I think we need 2, actually.....

I agree....and perhaps the Browns do as well. Notice that whenever a position is rarely talked about.....that may be the position the team has targeted.

Example 5: WR is 4 deep with starter quality in Bowe, Hawkins, Gabriel & Hartline......so is it really a "top" need or just an area that folks want to see some flash.... ???

Most analysts would probably say that the Browns have one of the weakest WR corps in the league. I am not sure I agree....but with the loss of Gordon, yes, I think it is seen that the Browns need a flashy top end speedster. Benjamin could be that....a bit....but most don't see him as #1 WR material. It seems that yes, while we have some nice 2s and 3s, we don't have a #1 WR.

So....yeah....AFTER the draft there will be plenty to talk on....but Im thinking some of these guys will end up being the reason Farmer makes some "unexpected" picks...Like DB's and OLB's earlier.......and OL and WR later(if at all)....

Of course, Farmer denies it.....but I still think he has a prejudice against WRs in general and unproven rookie WRs in particular...that is why he has picked up these veterans that have shown NFL capability: Hawkins/Bowe/Hartline.

Ive been pushing edge rushers, safeties and OLB as my higher priorities.....and wouldn't be surprised to see some of the predictions of DL and OL falling back slightly in the pick order.....especially if the monsters arent there to pick

I agree somewhat. I think the Browns overall roster may be a strong as any of our AFCN competition. But, of course, in reality a few things are missing.......the always important quality QB.....and other offensive playmakers. As noted above....our WR corps is considered pedestrian...and maybe it is. Our RBs are unproven. Our TEs the same or worse. Our run defense was poor despite the talent.

But, in my mind the Browns really are only 2-3 really quality players from being a team that can challenge.

Honestly, we are not going to get that qb imo....and shouldn't try this year....shouldn't "waste" more top picks for a Mario-TAH.

They should continue to build up the beast positions....OL/DL/LB.....plus try to get at least one playmaker with all their resources.

I must not be articulating my thoughts clearly......not really asking whos gonna make the team or get cut.....asking where the depth weaknesses are greatest and if they make a difference going into the draft......

it's not really too soon to analyse where we are weak in depth, right???....the day before the draft?....unless Im crazy to think it matters. Or maybe some folks only want to draft positions where the starters are weak then......?

so, I guess those players "that wont make it that far" are the ones Im asking about....ones who were on the 54 man roster(not the 90)......

I agree 100%....stopping the run is a priority.....just not convince the Browns think our guys cant do it, considering they were all injured. So, one school of thought is that since they were injured, they cant play anymore or need to be replaced?....or.....the other possibility is the Brows think they'll be fine now that they are healed?.....

Well, again, it comes back to need vs. BPA. The Browns may not "need" an OT.....but if the very best player available is an OT...and no one in a position of need is close....they may take the OT.

Also...like safey etc. Just because the top of the draft is weak in an area does not mean that they could not get a decent player in the 4th 5th round, where there may be more value to taking someone at the weak position

Actually, I am hearing that they are not all that strong....its just that they are the best at those positions....so they get a 1st round ranking by default.....but that they really are 2d rounders at best in a stronger draft.

I agree 100%....stopping the run is a priority.....just not convince the Browns think our guys cant do it, considering they were all injured. Sure....I guess it just comes down to an depth issue. We thought we had a lot of depth last year on the DL....and we did....but all that depth got quickly dissipated with all the injuries to half our DL. Getting a Shelton may put him on top of the depth pile.....which we see now can be piled higher.

So, THERE, thats exactly what Im trying to find out.....you mention Benji as a #1 and I think he's the most likely one to be replaced.....wonder what the Browns think....???

Well, I don't think they...or we ever thought he was a #1....but just the fastest of the 2s or 3s. I guess if they don't like him at WR....as he is essentially a third stringer....and they won't use him a PR/KR.....then maybe best to get someone they do like for those jobs.

    Nelson Agholor?

  • Farmer has done a good job of filling in a roster full of veterans that could compete right now, if it was necessary. That has really freed up our ability to draft the best players on our board, and not be overyly concerned about the positions. All the guys you mentioned are capable of providing serviceable depth at the back of the roster, but are also upgradeable...

Bowie is a nice player, and should be in the mix, and you are correct that he might be the reason we don't draft a T...

Painter and/or Seymour can be challenged by a mid-to-late round pick, particularly if we find somebody who can play C and G...

Winn and D.Bryant will probalby make our final roster cuts, but neither are great. Winn is the guy I could see being gone because his contract is up next year and he has been pretty pedestrian since we moved to the 3-4...

Kitchen needs upgraded, and I think we go Taylor at NT with a rookie NT providing depth. Hughes and Starks are also capable of playing inside, especially on passing downs, so his skills may not be needed following the draft...

Benjamin and Moore have an outside shot at making this team. The Browns should draft a WR fairly early and I think they need to consider a 2nd guy who can be their KR/PR. If we don't improve our return game, then I think Moore has the better shot at sticking...

Solomon will be given every opportunity to make the roster as a situational pass-rusher. We are VERY thin at that position, and he would really have to stink it up to get cut early...

Carder is very expendible... Dansby, Kirksey, Robertson are already on the roster, and most likely there is only room for 1 more ILB and I think there are quite a few draft-worthy guys that can take his place...

R.Nelson is a good young player and the coaches like him. I think he will be on our team...

Poyer and Bademosi... we just can't get rid of these guys. They are both so versatile and Bademosi is a great STs player with the ability to play both S positions... This is his last year under contract but I think he gets another shot and we look to re-sign or upgrade after the season. Poyer will be battling with a bunch of young players and I don't think he has much of a chance...

As far as TE, we need to continue to upgrade. I'm not sure how DeFilippo wants to use his TEs, so it is hard to say what he is looking for...

Based on who we have and where we can upgrade, I think our draft could/should include some of the following:

    QB

    NT

    OLB

    WR

    ILB

    TE

    G/C

  • I recall Pettine talking about OLB, saying how they might try Bryant there, and that they'll look to address the position early in the draft. Can't find the interview though.

I agree that position needs addressed....and likely will be addressed. The supposed best of the bunch: Fowler and Beasley should be long gone before the Browns pick. Whence then do they get their man?

Eli Harald or Shaq Thompson in round 2?

Jethro (Davis) Tull in round 3-4?

There are other interesting names in rounds 4-6.....but that is just it, they are names. I am not sure about their value.

  • Good analysis, Mud.

You know I think O-line is the area where depth is most severely lacking... especially inside. For me it is the top area where drafting for depth makes sense. Behind it I'd put Safety. Also the route for CB, but I don't see the need for depth there.

Everywhere else creating depth by replacing a starter is the approach to take. Problem is you can't do that everywhere in one draft.

I am not sure, it may have been Bill Polian who said: you never draft a guard in the first round. OK....but we got a good one in Joel Bitonio with like pick #35, no? So, maybe we could go there again.

  • Who said anything about first round?

  • Who said anything about first round?

OK, right. At some point I have no doubt...unless they trade all their picks away, that they will draft for some O Line depth.

  • Mud, The Sliver in Scott Soloman:: Let's agree first T.B. and Tenn. are not The Steel Curtain of Defense's or Coaching.. Pettine is a Defensive Coach and gave Scott a Shot in his system because he knows what kind of player it takes to play it. I thought Scott delivered the best technique tackle of all last season and Pettine is the Perfect Coach to Coach this Kid.. Pre-season games will be Big for this Roster. See you There..

  • Our ST is so Undisciplined with all the flags has got to get fixed. T. Lockett or J. Hardy at WR and Kick Returns will make you forget all about M. Moore. It is a need we must address in this Draft. J. Leonard won't be there to Fair Catch it ,how Boring..

  • Time to update this thread. Maybe just start a whole new one on the same topic.

  • Ok.....so in the next week or so, we will add about 10 draft picks, plus probably several more UDFA's.....

Last year we added something close to 20 new players to our roster and Im thinking, with the upgrades in talent, that isn't very likely to happen again......so, for the sake of this post, lets assume we add only 10...(only???).....which means, of course, that some familiar names from the 54 man roster will have to go.....

So, I decided to look at our veteran depth and see which 2nd tier players are on the bubble and likely to be replaced and which ones are we looking to for growth and a more prominent role this coming season...

Ill start with the ones I think have the best chance of staying....and work down to the "uh oh's"....

Michael Bowie OT - He is the reason I think we wont be drafting an OT anywhere, although people keep mocking them to us. Started for the Seahawks in their first Super Bowl until a knee injury and played very well. We stole him....healed him....and now he will compete with Schwartz to start.

Billy Winn & Desmond Bryant - Both prominent players for us, but also players at a position in flux. We lost Rubin and added Starks, but now could be adding one(possibly 2) more players to the line.....If it's 2, then at least one of these guys is likely to move on(maybe 2).......(Ima say it's Bryant)

    I. Kitchen DT - I think his time is up.

Tank Carder MLB - after 4 years, Im thinking he's not gonna suddenly get good. A great candidate to upgrade.......

Travis Benjiman WR - Ditto above comment. (word for word)

Marlon Moore WR - The "other" WR on the bubble.....7 years in and still a ST. I think he has the advantage over Travis simply because he can still return kicks.....

Robert Nelson CB - The "other" rookie CB....... we dont hear much about him, but he has played well when given the chance(did we actually draft 4 good CB's in one year?????.....wow!)....deep position, so he better hope we dont draft yet another one....(if desir moves over, that will buy a spot)

Jordan Poyer FS - OK, Poyer hasn't done much. Very good tackler. Not so great in coverage. It was telling that Leonard(SS) was used to replace Gipson, instead of Poyer. With Leonard gone, Im thinking he is a weak link in an otherwise strong group. Look for Desir to take his job.

    J. Bademosi SS - Has been very solid on ST and our main gunner. Has a good chance to stick simply because of his ST skills. Still not a solid back up at SS though, and(with Poyer) a sign that S really really needs depth.

Scott Solomon OLB - Late season pick up who played 1 great game for us. The Browns are talking him up, but the reality is that he has done zero in his previous 4 years in the league. Tenn and TB didnt work out for him, so Im not putting too much faith until I see it. A monster OLB is really what I want to see and dont think Solomon is it.

    V. Painter & R. Seymour OL - These are the 2 guys we are hoping can prevent last years nightmare from happening again. Both are 2 year guys and show "some" promise. Not enough for me. Draft depth here and get some talent.

Tight end - No names because I honestly dont know how to rank the 3 that we have....Barnidge is a solid, dependable blocker that can catch some balls......Dray is our hands guy, but not much of a blocker or deep threat......and Housler?....who knows......so, any of these guys going? or are we set at TE?........who's 1 -2 or 3?

So..................I dont hate any of these guys, but dont have much faith that they will bring us more this year(or any year, ftm) or get notably better......the only exceptions being Bowie, Nelson & Seymour, who are very young and could pop.....

Ive had enough of Benji, Carder, Kitchen & Bryant....so would like to see them replaced with newly drafted players(who beat them out, of course)......

Have a small sliver of hope for Solomon...but still would like a new OLB too......

Thoughts on who should - could - will go?......or who will step up and surprise????

    I. Kitchen DT - I think his time is up. ...Hello Danny Shelton......!!

Tank Carder MLB - after 4 years, Im thinking he's not gonna suddenly get good. A great candidate to upgrade.......Hello Hayes Pullard...!!
