Interesting article.
Never liked the "Hair Band' style of music. Of course, there are smattering of songs I kind of like however.
This is a good article for analytics and, perhaps, for songwriters, critics, etc.
IMHO, however, it is difficult - if not impossible - to put "Hi Tech" analysis against something as "Hi Touch" as becoming emotionally attached to something like music.
This article also does not take into account what was going on in the macro environment that might have significantly shaped appetites for certain music genres or types.
It's only rock and role, but I like it.

I think all those 80's acts were all about the videos and getting on MTV,
Dire Straits not being that of course! (they were from the glorious 70's!)
