I see the water bottle incident as a non story and give Manziel credit thus far for having a much better work ethic. I don't see him beating out McCown to start this season. The direction the Browns are taking seems clear:
Early signs point to Josh McCown being unchallenged as Browns starting quarterback
Moving the chains: The first week of Browns OTAs was a revelation of where the team is going offensively and who is going to lead them. Their aim is to control the ball on the ground, have the quarterback manage the game and keep the defense in favorable situations.
The job description for quarterback is a modest one and must be embraced, not challenged. He must be willing to play within the structure of a conservative game plan. He must be content to “live for another down” and not try something daring to make a play by himself.
This is why the Browns signed Josh McCown, a 13-year NFL veteran who has played for six teams, and why McCown has been virtually anointed the starting quarterback without even the hint of a “competition” in training camp. It is why Johnny Manziel – tortured enough by his own personal recovery from an unspecified substance abuse problem – is a fish out of water in his second season with the Browns. Manziel didn’t become Johnny Football by handing off or flipping the ball 5 yards to a back in the flat.
The Browns aren’t trying to reinvent Manziel. They are, by all appearances, moving on.
It’s Josh: It all makes sense already, the Browns’ aggressive pursuit of easy-mannered McCown. Brian Hoyer was in a different stage of his career, still determined to prove he could carry a team, too edgy to go with the flow.
McCown, soon to be 36, knows his place and his limitations. “My focus is just how good can I be at decision-making,” McCown said before the Browns completed their first week of OTA practices. “Just holding myself to a high standard, where it never puts us in a bad situation and the defense is always playing with favorable fields. That’s what I hope people see as we move into the season.”
In 12 NFL seasons, McCown has never thrown for more than 2,511 yards and more than 13 touchdowns. When he found himself in surprising demand after a disastrous season with Tampa Bay, he was more attracted to the team with the strong offensive line than one with flashy receivers.
“After being with them, 5-6 weeks, it’s like, had I known it was this good I wouldn’t even needed to take a (free agent) visit (to Buffalo and Chicago),” McCown said of the Browns’ offensive line.
While many quarterbacks chafe at the job description of “game manager,” McCown embraces it.
“Yeah, man, look, that stuff doesn’t bother me,” he said. “I’m trying to win … we’re trying to win a championship. Call it what you want to call it. I just want to win football games.
“That’s my main focus, and it’s to protect the football, keep our team in manageable situations. I know the perception of it, but I think every quarterback to a degree has to be a game manager. He has to manage the football game and some guys have different skill sets that dictate the way they do that. I understand who I am and how I want to go about winning football games, and that’s the key for us.”

Brian Hartline stands firmly with new Browns teammate Josh McCownBrian Hartline minced no words in defending quarterback Josh McCown from naysayers on Tuesday.
Hartline's feelings toward the critics (including some media) came on a conference call after he signed his two-year contract, and can be summed up in this sentence: "Anybody that wants to bring in a veteran guy like that and believes in him, if you are a fan of the team why wouldn't you trust the coaching staff and what they are trying to build?"
"I know he's looking forward to establishing some roots here in Cleveland and I am excited to work here with him," Hartline said. "I think a lot of what the coaching staff thinks so if they are good with him, I am good with him."
He admitted he asked about the Browns long-term plans at quarterback -- but even in addressing that issue Hartline veered into McCown praise."I inquired," Hartline said. "Any kind of decisions that they want to make and our conversations can be kept between me and the coaches. With that being said, we've got a great veteran pro's pro in Josh McCown, and I think a lot of his game.

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Troubled Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel threw a water bottle at a heckler in an incident that didn't lead to any arrests or charges at the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament.Manziel had been turning away autograph requests from the fan for about two hours Saturday during the third round when an exchange escalated in the pool area of the Four Seasons Resort where the PGA Tour event is held, Irving police spokesman James McLellan said. The water bottled missed the 18-year-old male, and someone who was with Manziel pushed the fan, leading officers to intervene, McLellan said. So 90% of the Brownsboard and 100% of the Naples Browns Backers are wrong.
You,Walter, the Texas fanboys, a bunch of 12 year olds, and this season's bachelorette all want a "bad boy".
You know he's not a real "bad boy", right? Real bad boys don't "flip off" guys, go to rehab and throw water bottles.
Bad boys drink tequila, shit fire, fuck your wife, and don't explain anything.
IF, they throw something ... it's not water, it doesn't happen at a country club pool, it's not at a 18 year old boy, and they don't miss.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, is overreacting about Manziel. Johnny Manziel is a competitor and a heck of a good QB. He could be on any NFL teams roster right now. We should be happy that we have a QB like him waiting to get out there and take control of this team. That is his goal and that is our hope. It will happen. Last year it was Hoyer's team, there is no question about it. Since the McCoy handling on the QB spot with Weeden and everything else, when Hoyer showed that he was capable and then went down with an injury, it was his team... everyone knew that. When they drafted John Manziel is was expected that Hoyer would be the starter barring an injury or supreme excellence from Manziel that proved otherwise. When Hoyer hit the wall and Manziel was called on to get in there, he did so with limited reps with the starters. Manziel will win the Starting Job by week one and get his shot. McCown is an insurance policy that was necessary to have, Johnny may need more time, he may sustain injury with his 'never say die' demeanor and his ability to make plays on the fly with his legs. McCown thus has a task of always being ready to step in, to mentor Manziel in the ways of a veteran QB(which is something Hoyer would not do because he wanted the job for himself). That is the end of the story. Manziel is our QB, suck it up and accept it and shut the fuck up, it is what it is..

They're not wrong, they are just in the minority.
I don't want a bad boy quarterback. I don't give a shit about a person's off the field antics - good or bad. I want to stop bargain basement shopping for game managers. Game managers don't find extended postseason success. For every Trent Dilfer you name, I can name 10 Colt McCoy's. For every Brad Johnson, there is a Matt Cassel.
Game managers only work if you have a top 5 defense, a top 10 rushing attack, and great special teams play. If one of those go to shit, you can't rely on your "game manager" to do anything more than manage to lose.
I applaud the effort of the front office for having a sack of nuts and going after Manziel. If he turns out to be shit, he turns out to be shit and we go for another QB. But a bunch of drunk old hypocrites in a forum aren't going to have any impact on that whatsoever - all they do is continually ruin the overall mood by thumping their chest any time this guy gets photographed not studying his playbook.
This is worse than DA-BQ. At least that was a competition. This is just people rooting for a guy to fail with no heir apparent currently on the roster. To me, that's even dumber than rooting for the guy to win, despite his "bad boy" persona.
Also, I find it hilarious that there are people on here chastising the kid for being an alcoholic, then they turn around and post about how much they drink in a given day.
-
Johnny is still a boy, and until he grows into a man, he'll continue to make boyish decisions. Men need to be led by a man, and right now the kid isn't even close to being a leader, and hell, we haven't even talked about his lack of size, questionable arm strength, inability to read an NFL defense or inability to grasp the playbook.
Time will tell, and the clock is ticking..............
Even men make boyish decisions from time to time - see: Brady, Tom. The fact that this non-story has become a point of contention just shows the polarity of Manziel...and not in a good way. The level-headed among us realize that it's nothing, while the detractors are attempting to use this as another example of Manziel being "unworthy" to be a Browns QB (whatever that means) and the zealots are using this as a platform to voice how unfair Manziel's life is.
He's not going to sit in his room and study 24/7. To expect that is stupid - regardless of what any of us would supposedly do in that situation. (And I'm willing to bet that any single one of us would have gone to a large golf tournament in our spare time in our home state had we the money and the time off.) Manziel will go to events, he will live his life, and he will be photographed doing so. Those are the facts.
Getting heckled by a fan (while not drinking) at a golf tournament and throwing a water bottle are, in some ways, a sign of maturity for Manziel. Because this time last year he was passed out, face down on an inflatable swan in a Vegas pool.
The trolls and the blowhards can pissed off that he didn't offer the guy's child a free scholarship, then tip his hat and float away on a cloud of high-class good samaritan vibes. The ones of us who are actually realists can take solace in the fact that he's not as bad as he was at this point last year.
Based on the article I think the "fan" in this case was a "pushy ass douchebag". Only makes it even easier for JM to be the bigger person here. I'd think he'd want to diffuse the situation right off the bat.
From both the ESPN report and the NFL.com report, it seems like he did try to diffuse the situation multiple times.
"Police were in the area and asked Manziel's camp some questions about what had happened, the friend said. "There was no malicious intent. We separated the situation," said the friend, who spoke with the cops along with Manziel. "We told the cops, 'Will you please make sure there's distance between us?'"
Manziel was polite to the fan the first 10 times he sought a picture, telling him he was with his girlfriend and friends he hadn't seen in a while, the friend said. He didn't want to take hundreds of pictures with fans.
Eventually, the fan grabbed Manziel from behind and Manziel asked, "'Can you please not do that? Just please leave me alone,'" the friend said.
Manziel was with friends who were waiting on an Uber ride outside of the golf course when they encountered the fan again. Among the fan's insults to Manziel, the friend said, was "Ryan Tannehill is way better than you.""
I'm not sure what else Manziel was supposed to do. Sure, throwing a water bottle is certainly childish behavior, though I feel he gave the "fan" more than enough leeway. If it were me, it would have only taken half of those occurrences for me to knock the kid out cold.
joe haden has more class in his little toe than manziel could ever hope to have.
Not even close to a valid argument.

First, I'm not sure a valid, Tannehill comparison qualifies as an insult.
Second, while I agree any man at any age can make a 'boyish decision", the fact that you can pretzel the incident into a positive just shows how low you have set your "Manziel bar".
Third, while the kid grabbing JM was way over the line, and I would have as likely "popped" the kid as anyone here, that would have been a boyish decision I would have never gotten to by signing the fucking autograph.
I found myself asking this same question - however I realize this.... its an EXTREME privilege to be able to play in the NFL. Couple that with a quality athlete and more important a quality person - should be able to humble themselves at all times, be the better man and (even if they aren't willing) grit your teeth for a signing or two. If it was 50 people lining up, mobbing the guy I'd be able to understand. If it was one fucking kid, sign it, shake his hand and say you're looking to get some R&R in.
edit: The Haden comparison is rubbish because Joe, from my experience, takes serious time out for the fans and we love him for it.
Good points... Sign, shake, thank and then ask to be left alone. If more autograph seekers then start assembling, quietly leave.
I'd only add that at this point JM is more celebrity than "player" no matter the league. That is a difference between JM and Haden.. or LeBron... or Tannehill.
Well I can guarantee you two things and that is that both former Texas born legends Sammy Baugh and Bobby Layne would have cleaned this kids clock by the second unwanted interruption.
Browns fans who continue to make something out of this situation just have no clue. Be happy it was a water bottle and that otherwise JM has obviously understood he needed to make major changes, which so far he has done. Start backing up your player for his attempts to be your "committed" QB. If you can't see that 10 attempts to explain things to this turd was way over the limit, then your hatred is just getting in the way of your common sense.
And JM fans that want to hold him faultless are knowledgeable? Show common sense? You've been telling me and others here we don't have a clue since you arrived. How's that going for you?
"Start backing up your player for his attempts to be your 'committed' QB." Makes TC's bar seem high by comparison.

No one would give a shit about this situation if Johnny didn't have a history of having a self-created circus around him. Didn't he already have an issue with someone in his posse thumping a fan in a hotel lobby?
The fan issued a public apology after the fact and took all of the blame for attempting to agitate Johnny.
Once again, a situation where - had Johnny not been Johnny - nobody would be talking about it whatsoever. The "circus" isn't self-created. it's wholly driven by the media. There was an interesting take on this today by Pat McManoman (http://espn.go.com/blog/cleveland-browns/post/_/id/13996/does-johnny-manziels-belong-to-all-of-us).
Basically, what he's wondering is what we've talked about on here before - at what point does the media make his life a self-fulfilling prophecy?
I used to be a hot-headed fighter. I used to think of myself as some sort of Robin Hood when it came to drunk people, idiots and assholes. if someone was showing their ass, I'd punch them in face just to show I was bigger and better than them. I've punched more than one friend in the face on more than one occasion. But, once I hit a certain age, I realized that was just stupid peacocking behavior from a young kid with ego problems. I haven't been in a fight in two years, I've been very studious about working off any pent-up aggression, I take care to rationally talk through any issues I have with drunk friends or I just remove myself from the situation. I have dedicated time and brainpower to doing something that most people just do naturally.
However, my friends, knowing my past, still antagonize me from time to time just to see if they can. They poke and prod because, to them, it's funny to see me get riled up. It's the same with Johnny now. Regardless of what he was...he's making a conscious effort to change - but the media (and society as a whole) aren't willing to forget. A mature Johnny who calmly removed himself from the situation and spoke to the authorities doesn't sell papers. So they'll take the one aspect they can and spin it out of control. It doesn't matter that the police and bystanders have both commented on the fact that he handled it maturely, it doesn't matter that he was at a weekend event where alcohol was bountiful, yet wasn't drinking at all - he threw a water bottle so he's clearly "same old Johnny".
I don't have the restraint to continue to deal with idiots for extended periods of time. The fact that I'm still posting here is crazy.
LOL... very quoteworthy...
Just think of us as free therapy.
I think thats a pretty fair statement overall.......we can all agree that Johnny has caused much of his trouble....BUT the media is magnifying it and pouncing every chance they get(and there are a LOT of opportunities, unfortunately).....and he seems to attract a lot of idiots, like this kid he encountered at the tourney....or the guy in the lobby who got punched......or the fans at the bar who poured drinks on him.....so, if not for the idiots and prying media, most of this stuff would just fly under the radar.....and if Johnny actually played good, then we should all admit we would be more accepting of his antics....
For me.....it's not really about "blame" or whos fault this all is.........no, it's about all this shit being brought to the Browns(no matter WHO is the initial cause).....thats all....I dont hate Johnny, I just hate the shit that swirls around him...(and no matter whether you think it's his fault or not....it's there and it's not good for the team)
And the only 2 solutions to make it stop are either he learns to handle it properly AND plays great....or he goes away.....
Until then....he needs to figure out that he is a HUGE target and have a better plan about how he's gonna handle "things" when they crop up....as they seem to do so frequently.....
Sometimes I am jealous of other's posts... like this one.
If Manziel had done absolutely nothing and left the event, we would have seen "Manziel Accosted By Inebriated Fan; Leaves PGA Tourney Event" - because that's going to have a high clickthrough rate and is a shareable news item.
Actually I am no sure we would have seen that headline. Not sexy enough....
Agreed.
Seconded...
Judging from the jersey sales, they are.
Anyone have regional sales figures?
