Redskins lose Trademark Registration

Let this be noted: they are losing their right to trademark registration, NOT their right to the trademarks themselves.
They can continue to use the Redskin name and the logos they have been using. Nothing stops them from doing that.
What they likely lose is the right to trademark protections. In other words, basically, they can use all these images they want, but cannot win a lawsuit for trademark infringement against someone else who would want to use the name/symbols.
But, the question: who else would want to use this name and symbols for profit? Under free speech rules these symbols were always free to be satirized and criticised.
Maybe the one thing they lose is the right to ask for an injunction against someone that is making knockoff gear....but that is all to be fleshed out.

They are still a licensed property under the NFL correct? I mean you think the NFL is going to put up with people using one of their trademarked and copyrighted money makers?

Yes, it is highly possible that the NFL WILL have to put up with people using one of their trademarked icons. That very well may be specifically what the ruling implies: they lose the right to registration....they lose the right to protection.
If I were a knockoff producer and sued by the NFL my defense would be that the NFL has no case as they have lost their right to registration.

That could work...but Snyder says he will never change the name.
If he and the NFL are willing to sacrifice losing millions....so be it. Let them keep it.

They still use the logo, Stuart. And it is the best logo in sports IMO.
Chief Wahoo the best logo in sports? A face only a mother could love I guess.
You take a national poll and I assure you it would not be the best logo in sports.
I found this..not a poll though. Seems to be the opinion of one person.
No Cleve team ranked.
At one time Cleveland did possess one of the best logos in sports, but Republic Steel of Cleveland gave it to Pittsburgh.lol

That poll ranks logos. But, you see, the best logo is no logo ergo no Browns logo would be ranked, now would it?

Wasn't it U.S. Steel? I just don't remember. Suffering from CRS tonight.
Wasn't it U.S. Steel? I just don't remember. Suffering from CRS tonight.
Republic Steel of Cleveland told Art Rooney to use the US Steel logo for his team, and even interceded with US Steel on the Pittsburgh Pirates football team's behalf to allow it to be used. This is all documented.

and, if you really think about it, they would make a TON of money if they changed the name/logo....because everyone would want to buy the new stuff...(kinda like the Browns new jerseys, etc).....
So, yep, there would be a lot if whiners and such, but as a business money making move, Id think it's the smart thing to do....

The Chief has character. All the years I was growing up and heading downtown using Clifton. Heading onto the shoreway and crossing over the bridge, there sat Chief Wahoo, bigger than life on the outside of Muni. That is the best logo to me in all of sports.
Still, why is it only football? The Blackhawks, the Braves, the tribe all have their names intact. Even Louisiana Monroe caved to the pressure. Are the Seminoles and Utes next?
All of those names you describe don't carry the same weight of redskin. Blackhawk was a revered warrior and leader of the area close to Chicago, Braves were warriors in general, and Indians were akin to calling "African-American" people "black". Sure, even some people find that wrong but most people accept that. The logos, especially Chief Wahoo, are I'm sure going to change sooner than latter.
Redskin was the slang term for Native Americans akin to using the "n-word" for black people. There's a lot of interesting ideas of the history behind the word itself, but it undoubtedly became the slang phrase to use towards Native Americans as lesser, inferior people. I don't have strong feelings one way or the other really but I can understand why Native Americans would be pretty peeved off about it.

Well, as noted in the following blurb from Mentalfloss, there is conjecture on the origins of the Browns name:
There’s some debate about whether Cleveland’s professional football franchise was named after its first coach and general manager, Paul Brown, or after boxer Joe Louis, who was nicknamed the “Brown Bomber.” Team owner Mickey McBride conducted a fan contest in 1945 and the most popular submission was Browns. According to one version of the story, Paul Brown vetoed the nickname and chose Panthers instead, but a local businessman informed the team that he owned the rights to the name Cleveland Panthers. Brown ultimately agreed to the use of his name and Browns stuck.
In essence, if you go by the theory that the Browns are named after Joe Louis "The Brown Bomber", then you realize that the Browns are essentially the Cleveland "African-Americans". So, if that were true, it could certainly be controversial. If you go for the version that the team is named after Paul Brown.....not so much. I do not think that the Browns organization, or any of its owners over the years ever took an official stance on how the name came to be....and maybe they want to just keep hands off the entire subject.

Yep.
The name "Indians" is not derogatory, but that logo is hideous. Opposite of the Redskins.
The Cleveland Indians with that Redskins logo would be cool.
Imagine the Washington Redskins with that red faced Chief Wahoo as their logo.
Its good to see that the Indians have arrived into the 21 Century by using the letter "C" instead of that ugly ass logo.

The logo difference is those other teams, Blackhawks, Seminoles, Braves, Redskins have proud dignified appearing images, unlike the cooning, skinning and grinning Wahoo.
PC is nothing new. Thats why the baseball teams Atlanta Crackers and Atl Black Crackers no linger exist. If they still did, you probably wouldnt like

Agree. And of course the teams in Washington do have a history of changing their names in order to be politically correct. The Washington Bullets became the Washington Wizards in order to not have any association with the violence connected with the term Bullet (though, to me it really should have been changed when the team moved from being the Baltimore Bullets to Washington)

I think that ranking has little to do with best logo.....and mostly to do with which teams have been most popular and successful. Of the ones on that list those that I kind of like best....just the logo, are the Gamecocks, Colts horseshoe, Sabres crossed swords under a Buffalo, the Saints Fleur de Lis, the Spurs where the U in Spurs is a spur, the Chiefs, the Maple Leafs maple leaf, the Longhorns. And yes, even the Cowboys have a good simplistic iconic emblem with the star.
Not mentioned in that list among my favorites include:
The Chargers Lightning Bolt
The Rams horns
The Brewers mitt spelled out with the M and the B
The Angels A with halo.

How about these:

Cool the way they did it.

It's a myth that they're "peeved off" about it. They've never even complained about it until a couple years ago when this entire hubbub started. To grant their request now would be to implicitly grant license to anyone to begin complaining about anything NFL-related with the knowledge that the NFL will soon enough cave.
Page 1 of the liberal playbook: complain until you get your way. No coincidence these are the same techniques used by small children.

Actually we really wouldn't care, which is why those words have never had any sting. YOU have the choice of whether or not you're going to be offended by something.

So you've talked to many Native Americans and asked their opinion on it? So I should tell my Native American friends who, ya know, live and work with other Native Americans and have always been opposed to the slur they don't actually feel that way? Get your head out of your ass for 2 seconds and realize the world is a big place. Just because you feel like it shouldn't offend anyone doesn't mean jack shit. It's not "liberal" or "PC" to change things that marginalize huge groups of people, it's the right thing to do.

You must really be young. There have been protests about the Redskins name going back to the 60s and 70s.
And you know who those liberals are who have been complaining all this time? Indians. Native Americans.

They use the name for their own high school teams. And no that's not comparable to black people using the n word because they're not using it in official capacities (like their high school mascots). Give me a freaking break.
-
So I suppose it's just come to a head the last 2 years for no real reason, Gipper? Ok.
-
definitely not a new issue.....Gipper is right....it's been news since the 70's and get restirred just about every decade....I remember a huge hubub when they were in the super bowl(early 90's?).....Id say it's nowhere near as loud as it was back then.....been a controversial name for almost 50 years now....
-
If that is the case then why are people now conceding the issue? Why isn't the reaction "ehh, this happens every few years. It's not gonna change."? All I see out there is "yeah they're gonna change it pretty soon."
