  • Gruden had said last season he would love a chance to coach JM. Johnny must have seen the interview and took him up on the offer.

  • I'm not saying this is the case with McCown, but the notion that the best player is always starting is a myth on any team with any coach. Some guys are just gamers. Some hate practice. Some can't show some aspect of their game in practice (tackle breaking, tackling, physicality in general, etc.). Coaches lean one way. They'll favor "their" guys or experience or combine times or whatever. Contracts are another factor. The fact is that guys come off the bench and play just as well if not better all the time. You see this regularly at the RB position in the NFL with all the injuries.

  • McCown will not take the Browns to a playoff game. They wasted 5 million on him. There was good quarterbacks later in the draft.

  • Eh. Sounds like you think offensive linemen are a "dime a dozen"..... just my imagination...

  • i was arguing with some JF fag on google+ all weekend on a browns post. some people are STILL just blinded by manziel that they call into question the reasoning behind starting mccown and 'we need to see what johnny has', throwing up mccown's record as a buc and really not seeing the whole picture as a brown's fan but a fan of the kid. when i brought up how bad manziel looked when he started last year out came the excuses.

as i said to him, i think pettine and co. are a bit more qualified than you or me to determine who the best QB will be to start for the browns. i hope manziel does blossom into a starter, and a good one. but the clock is ticking. hell i loved the gilbert pick but if the kid doesn't show improvement this year i'll write him off like a bad client dinner.

  • Here is an interesting quote I just pulled from NFL.com......

"We'll try to make it up by having one of the best defenses, so we'll keep other teams from scoring many points. And we'll be able to run the ball and hopefully control the clock. And we'll continue to get better on special teams. So if we can do those three things, all we need is consistent play out of our quarterbacks -- they don't have to be superheroes."

Could be a word for word quote from Pettine....right?...except it's Dan Obrien talking about Hoyer.....

Looks like the Texans have the same plan that we do.....ha!

Sure does sound like a quote from Pettine. I like the strategy. We are building a solid team of players for the long term and we will be competitive in the short term. We surprised the league last season with a little over half way through the season and we were in first place at 6-3 until injuries took it's toll. We will have more depth and talent this season.

I'm obviously for having a great overall team, but there's just no way you will ever be a serious contender in the NFL nowadays without franchise level QB play. Look at the playoffs last year-the common denominator of every team sans the Cardinals is a franchise QB. The cardinals got walloped (I was at that game and saw it happen) because they simply didn't have a good QB in the game.

Don't get me wrong here, I actually like the draft strategy and it's not "wrong" to find the QB last after having a good team. But the idea that you can have a Brian Hoyer type QB (which I'm all too worried McCown will be) and be anything more than a mediocre team is a farce. It's not some crazy opinion but the simple fact is until we get our true franchise level QB we will never be consistently good. It's plain as day to see when you look at the NFL too.

  • I watched the Cardinals game in the playoffs and the third string quarterback Ryan Lindley they were forced to use was awful. Lindley posted one of the worst QB performances in playoff history. No matter how good your defense is a quarterback cannot play as badly as Lindley did and expect to win.

I think McCown while not the long term answer might be the answer this year. The hope with McCown is the job he did with the Bears in 2013 and if he can come close to duplicating it. This year just did not seem the right year to try again for the franchise quarterback when we had other holes to fill on our roster.

Same general approach anyway, but very different realizations.

Texans' D is built front to back; the opposite of ours.

Their D is more "star driven".

On the other side of the ball:

They may have the best LT you've never heard of, but otherwise have a pretty average O-line.

Good collection of RBs, but led by a bona fide star in Arian Foster. Problem is AF gets hurt every other year and he was healthy last year.

They also have a legit WR in DeAndre Hopkins.

  • Hoyer got his breath of fresh air and his money but now can he handle going back to a backup QB behind Mallet?? I don't see Hoyer a threat to Mallet in passing game.

  • Hello Browns fans!

My name's Alan and im a Buffalo Bills fan that lives in Rochester, NY - where they hold their training camp. I was also a big fan of Johnny Manziel coming out of A&M. I'll be attending one of the Bills/Browns joint practices. I'm hoping I could maybe get an autograph by Johnny Football.

I know training camp autographs are very hit or miss. But I was wondering if anyone here knew if he signed after practices last season often or at all? I'm just trying to gauge if there's even a possibility.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this or not. Being new I didn't want to post new threads unnecessarily. On a side note - I wanted to say that i've always felt like the Bills and Browns are sort of like cousins in a way and I always pull for you guys when they aren't playing the Bills. Good luck this season!

me too. the buffalo/cleveland connection seems to me to be a new rivalry in the making if the nfl played their cards right. both are on the lake and on I-90.... a better travel than cleveland to pittstank if you ask me.

there are a couple of bills fans that show up here every year to boast about their team and yada yada and some came to see if manziel was the real deal.

i say manziel has as good a shot as being an elite QB in the league as watkins does as a WR.

just a smarmy remark to rile up an opposing fan (besides, he's new here so gotta give him a little taste of what he's in store for). i was laughing as i typed it. 😎

Haha I kinda gave it a raised eyebrow when I read it and thought that maybe you're a huge Manziel fan with a lot of faith.

Sammy Watkins is damn special. Unfortunately - the guys throwing him the ball aren't. I have this nagging fear that he'll get tired of ODB getting all the press and want out if they can't get a halfway decent QB by the start of next season.

But that's probably just my Buffalo fan inferiority complex talking. I hope...

  • As to the Manziel autograph I would refer you to the guy who pestered him for one for 4 freakin' hours before finally getting a water bottle thrown his way. He also recently had an autograph session in College Station that cost you over a hundred bucks to stand in line for two hours, so outlook not so good. However if you happen to be a kid with cancer you have a good chance of him bringing you to a game along with anything you want signed. Or if you are challenged intellectually Joe Haden could get one from him for you.

Or just be a Bills fan and watch this before seeing Haden.

i guess. all i know is there were (and still are) a lot of disgruntled browns fans pissed that we didn't take him in the draft. thing is, adding a star WR to a team w/o a QB is like buying sprinkles for an ice cream cone....w/o an ice cream cone.

  • Stupid discussion. Buffalo needs a QB before Watkins has a prayer.

Wide receivers are shiny hood ornaments.
