Out of the Doghouse 2015?

Kickoffs any more is 1.watching it go over your head, touchback. Or 2. having to make a good decision on bringing it out 8 yards deep. After watching video, god I hope he can catch a punt or the leader of the depth chart is benji if we keep him around and next is Poyer and that's like watching Jim Leonard catch fair catch's all over again. Yawn. Yawn. beer run to fridge could start at a kicking formation, let me know what I miss.

Word is that Benji is looking much improved......live action will tell soon enough.....

you can just feel the level of arrogance in that dude which it's clear hasn't changed.
I'm not getting "arrogance" so much as I am "numbness"... at least that what I get when it's not being obscured by annoyance.
And, yep.....seems happy about returning kick offs(which is good).....but a huge NO on the punt thing.....ok.....skeered?
Gotta be catching the ball on punts because to a man of his size and gifts, I'd think the broken field often presented on a punt return would have to be preferable to the wall he'd see returning kicks.

I think we are on the same page, it just seems like the guy is still going through the motions (and that's what some people are reporting too). It seems like he still thinks his high draft status and athletic ability will get him by when it's clear it won't.

Well if anyone can turn him around it would be Aaron Glenn, undersized corner who performed at all-pro level because his head was always in the game. And he never pouted a second when beat. Just got ready to make a great play the next time it came his way.

Justin Gilbert looking like another Browns bust
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 5, 2015, 12:41 PM EDT
Great attention has been paid to Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, a 2014 first-round pick who was a major disappointment as a rookie and isn’t expected to start this year. But Manziel may not have been the biggest bust of the Browns’ 2014 draft class. That honor could go instead to cornerback Justin Gilbert, who was chosen eighth overall last year (14 spots ahead of Manziel) and has also been a huge disappointment.Gilbert spent most of his time on the bench last year amid talk that he wasn’t working hard enough in practice and hadn’t earned the respect of veteran teammates. He was deactivated for Week 17 because he showed up late to a team meeting. This year in training camp, Gilbert is buried on the depth chart: Even when starting cornerbacks Tramon Williams and Joe Haden were given off days, Gilbert didn’t get first-string reps, according to ESPNCleveland.com. Pierre Desier, a fourth-round pick last year, is the cornerback moving onto the first team when the veteran starters are out of practice.Asked if his goal is to earn a starting job, Gilbert answered, “We’ll see what happens.”What it appears will happen is that Gilbert will remain a backup who doesn’t get much playing time. That was clearly not the plan when the Browns used a Top 10 pick on Gilbert. It’s looking like Gilbert will go down as another Browns bust. -
more fluff from the media who have nothing else to write about. if by year's end he hasn't shown improvement and has an attitude problem, THEN i'll concede he was a wasted pick but these reports are a week into TC and they are already burying people or lifting them to demi-god status. they know jack shit.

Thus the wisdom of spending a 1st round on a returner...

I think we are on the same page...
Yeah... a page called disappointed.

I thought it would have been because he's a former student...

I think that catches me up on my emoticon quota...

Sure, but the interview quote is real and perplexing...
Where's the fire?
It's as if the kid does not know that Mudfly's rep is at stake here...

or mine. i was hoping like hell we'd land gilbert in the draft. now i wish it'd been my second choice which was evans.

So, he can return kicks and we had five #1s in three years:
Richardson, Weeden
Mingo
Gilbert, Manziel
None of them are starting and two of them are gone.
I'm pretty sure ... OK, absolutely sure ... no team has ever fucked up five first round picks in three years like us.
But we won the rest of the draft and we will make the playoffs with McCown, so there's that ...

I think Mingo plays far better this year as a two armed man. I don't give up on him that fast.
-
i know and that pisses me off big time. i'm just wondering if he doesn't want to be on this team?
The train is leaving, and homeboy better get on or get run over. If Desier and K'Wuan turn out to be All-Pros and Gilbert doesn't, or worse yet gets cut, that's still pretty damn good........ Time will tell and his clock is ticking.
I'm hoping his quote was out of frustration and it just came out wrong.
-
The good things is that we have a deep ass secondary even if he dont pan out. Cant cry about stuff that is what it is. I personally like Desir, last year there was a tv special on him and made me like him more. He is a family guy fist and foremost, which means he will concentrate more on the game rather then other shananagins. The dude is super raw but is gonna be a steal for us. Also, if the DB from Oregon pays off in 2 years, the wasted Gilbert pick wont even be mentioned.

I agree! He's only 24 and started playing organized football in 2007 as a junior in H.S. He's an all state track man.
There is lots of growing yet to do. I think they should have him blitz about every 3rd defensive play.
-
IMHO, the bottom line is...Johnny has fire & Gilbert doesn't. It's not often I give up on a player, but I just don't see real fire & pride in Gilbert. I also don't see him as responding to coaching or relating to his teammates. I seldom sour on a player, but I have on Gilbert.
I also do NOT think Pettine & Farmer will keep this guy around just because he was our top pick a year ago.
We'll see.

I was all in too......not giving up yet though......too much obvious talent.....

Good points Mike.....Im thinking the FO is just as frustrated as we are.....especially since it's apparent he has the raw skills and talent to play in this league.....
Cutting a guy who sucks is easy.....but letting all that raw talent walk is so much harder......you just keep thinking(and hoping)(and praying) that the light goes on......

Maybe three's a charm, but now there's a knee in the picture... dammit...

Except that he's been a one-trick pony blitzing (speed) and last year showed signs of being our best cover LB...
At the 2013 Combine he weighed 241.
His roster weight this year? 240...
The question about him coming in was about adding mass to his track body to add a power element to his game... both for pass rushing and run D. He hasn't... and I am going to guess it is not for lack of effort.
Here's to his speedy recovery...
-
I will say this about Justin....he keeps flashing....he had the best DB play last night and is having a big day today too....
It's pretty clear that Pettine bases a LOT on how these guys practice....and Justin obviously isnt strong in his preparation or practice habits....
But....when he plays....he keeps showing that supreme talent.....
I think(hope) if he actually gets a chance to play, he will do well.......but really needs to step it up at practice, if he's ever gonna get that chance.....
-
I agree Mud. I just can't watch this 2014 tape of Gilbert and agree with the assessments of his talent from practice.
