Yep...Id say Johnny is looking much better than what we saw last season.....taking steps in the right direction.....got a little taste of keeping the play alive...I like the progress Im seeing....
In his defense, the 2nd team O Line has sucked royally and Johnny has had zeee-ro time...to stand in the pocket....which barely exists. Thinking he'd be even better with some blockers and receivers......time will tell.....Im much more encouraged now than before....
Agree, but right now I'm wondering where our vaunted 1st Team "Best Oline in the NFL" is hiding? Because the unit that rolled out there last night sure wasn't them. Pre-season I know, but my concern is growing.

I don't get concerned about scores or how units do in pre-season. I want to see key players of the future progress. What I saw from Shelton, JM, Cooper especially and Orchard gives hope for the season to come.

Not concerned about scores. Getting concerned about how some of our "perceived" strengths are competing. Specifically on offense.

Yep, assuming Barnidge is fine after concussion checks, he's #1, backed up by Bibbs. Then does Pett want a blocker or a receiver as the #3? My money's not on the 'flashy' player.

Why should Barnidge be #1? So far I have seen almost nothing from him that warrants that designation, either last year or this preseason.
Explain to me what contributions he has made that makes him the starter. Blocking ability?

Getting better and better. He needed help at the end, but didn't get much. I think that's in part due to the doubt of his teammates. When he shows them that confidence that "we will win", guys will believe and make those plays.
Assuming he continues on his upward trend.

It could also be better with the first string WRs rather than the third string WRs. Veterans like Bowe and Hartline will know to come back and give help....and hopefully Hawkins/Gabriel/ etc. will also know. The camp fodder and rookies playing last night don't know or haven't learned this skill.

Agreee, Michael Bowie looks more like David Bowie playing the Thin White Duke diddling around at rehearsal:

Good game last night.
Seeing him starting to grow a little bit out there.

Well....Housler did finally catch a few last night.....though, Id say Bibbs is looking better......and better......
Not seeing us keep 4 plus a FB....so, my bubble has Housler and Dray on it......and Housler dont block....sooooo

Yup... last nite Barn gets dinged and Dray comes in and catches his first of the Pre... looked lumbering doing it, but did it.
Housler caught a couple, but looked neither smooth not fast doing so. Not seeing the threat...
I'm concerned Barn is a little fragile, but see a TE trio of Barn, Dray and Bibbs in our 2015 future.

Manziel looked good. McCown looked terrible. Looks like a controversy in Cleveland.

In order... Yes. No. No.
yep...McCown made some of those bad decisions we were hoping he wouldnt....those int's shouldnt have happened.....
The first INT was off Barn's usually reliable hands.
The 2nd??? In his presser McCown seemed to be saying it was in the game plan to throw 50/50 balls to single covered WRs. Was an odd thing to say.
Unfortunately that throw was not a 50/50 ball...

My impression was that compared to the Mackless Manhandling the Bills laid on us last year, we did well. But as I said, it's grade time... it's my pre-season, too. Think I'll try to look for unit failures vs. individual.

It's an odd thing to admit to, but it's certainly not an odd gameplan.
It's something I've been harping on for years. Overthrown 50/50 balls to single covered WR's are a very solid coaching point. It's very hard for a DB to intercept a 50/50 ball without drawing a penalty, especially in today's NFL, so the results are essentially:
Catch
Incompletion
Penalty

That was also a bad call of a "post possession" flag for targeting defenseless receiver. He was hit before, not after, the ball actually ended up in the defender's hands. Bad call. Should have been our ball and a "no interception".

Love this Joe Thomas quote on JM's play last night: “He’s a popular player because he’s a fun player to watch – the way he escapes and runs around and throws the ball down field. It’s like watching somebody in the backyard in the ‘Turkey Bowl.’ He’s always had a big fan base because of how he plays the game. Certainly, you got to see a lot of that tonight. I think he’s learning to pick and choose his times to do that instead of majoring in that.”

Totally agree here-he stayed in the front of Line of scrimmage twice very nicely last night. One was the TD pass to Wynn, the other was a nice 3rd and 15 completion called back for OL downfield. Certainly the stuff you like to see.

slightly dramatic. But yea, lots of improvement.Manziel is coming alive right before our eyes.

D bone & Tour, I think what you will find is when Josh got his last chance with the 1's our OL finally showed the reason why we could be a great running team with a weapon. The OL pass protection is what was piss poor. Josh moved the team well that drive but did we lose a opportunity to see what JM could do with the 1's and that pass rush??

McCown looked like Grandpappy Amos from the Real McCoys out there.

You're confusing Josh with "Little" Luke McCown...

Maybe we did, but I do not think the staff did not need to see that pairing. This is not 2014. There is no QB competition this year.
Manziel is coming alive right before our eyes.

I'd think you'd take offense at someone calling your boy an amateur...

Johnny looked much improved over last year, but then again he couldn't get any worse. He made a couple of nice throws last night, but he made a bonehead move at the end of the game by not running out of bounds.
Tour, I can't wait to read your O-line analysis. I saw Mack get manhandled a couple times by Marcell Dareus, and I began to wonder if he was 100%. Then I read Doerschuk's tweet this morning.
@sdoerschukREP: Pettine makes little of Alex Mack's struggles w/Marcell Dareus. Says no one in NFL can block Dareus 1-on-1. Pettine coached him in 2013.
