Yup... last nite Barn gets dinged and Dray comes in and catches his first of the Pre... looked lumbering doing it, but did it.

Housler caught a couple, but looked neither smooth not fast doing so. Not seeing the threat...

I'm concerned Barn is a little fragile, but see a TE trio of Barn, Dray and Bibbs in our 2015 future.

  • Manziel looked good. McCown looked terrible. Looks like a controversy in Cleveland.

    In order... Yes. No. No.

    @mudfly said:

yep...McCown made some of those bad decisions we were hoping he wouldnt....those int's shouldnt have happened.....

The first INT was off Barn's usually reliable hands.

The 2nd??? In his presser McCown seemed to be saying it was in the game plan to throw 50/50 balls to single covered WRs. Was an odd thing to say.

Unfortunately that throw was not a 50/50 ball...

Agree, but right now I'm wondering where our vaunted 1st Team "Best Oline in the NFL" is hiding? Because the unit that rolled out there last night sure wasn't them. Pre-season I know, but my concern is growing.

My impression was that compared to the Mackless Manhandling the Bills laid on us last year, we did well. But as I said, it's grade time... it's my pre-season, too. Think I'll try to look for unit failures vs. individual.

It's an odd thing to admit to, but it's certainly not an odd gameplan.

It's something I've been harping on for years. Overthrown 50/50 balls to single covered WR's are a very solid coaching point. It's very hard for a DB to intercept a 50/50 ball without drawing a penalty, especially in today's NFL, so the results are essentially:

    Catch

    Incompletion

    Penalty

  • That was also a bad call of a "post possession" flag for targeting defenseless receiver. He was hit before, not after, the ball actually ended up in the defender's hands. Bad call. Should have been our ball and a "no interception".

  • Love this Joe Thomas quote on JM's play last night: “He’s a popular player because he’s a fun player to watch – the way he escapes and runs around and throws the ball down field. It’s like watching somebody in the backyard in the ‘Turkey Bowl.’ He’s always had a big fan base because of how he plays the game. Certainly, you got to see a lot of that tonight. I think he’s learning to pick and choose his times to do that instead of majoring in that.”

Totally agree here-he stayed in the front of Line of scrimmage twice very nicely last night. One was the TD pass to Wynn, the other was a nice 3rd and 15 completion called back for OL downfield. Certainly the stuff you like to see.

Careful there Walter-you might wake up Zombo. 😆

slightly dramatic. But yea, lots of improvement.
  • Oh ... I'm awake. Our first round draft choice from last year is close to achieving "competent backup" status. He's come a long way from "looks like a football player". What time does the parade start today in Berea?

    Zombo

  • D bone & Tour, I think what you will find is when Josh got his last chance with the 1's our OL finally showed the reason why we could be a great running team with a weapon. The OL pass protection is what was piss poor. Josh moved the team well that drive but did we lose a opportunity to see what JM could do with the 1's and that pass rush??

  • McCown looked like Grandpappy Amos from the Real McCoys out there.

You're confusing Josh with "Little" Luke McCown...

Maybe we did, but I do not think the staff did not need to see that pairing. This is not 2014. There is no QB competition this year.

I'd think you'd take offense at someone calling your boy an amateur... 😛

  • Johnny looked much improved over last year, but then again he couldn't get any worse. He made a couple of nice throws last night, but he made a bonehead move at the end of the game by not running out of bounds.

Tour, I can't wait to read your O-line analysis. I saw Mack get manhandled a couple times by Marcell Dareus, and I began to wonder if he was 100%. Then I read Doerschuk's tweet this morning.

@sdoerschukREP: Pettine makes little of Alex Mack's struggles w/Marcell Dareus. Says no one in NFL can block Dareus 1-on-1. Pettine coached him in 2013.

  • Positives:

The dude has always been, and still is, accurate.

He's using his mobility sparingly, but for the most part, correctly.

He's reading blitzes and hitting hot reads..

    He's making good audibles.

    No huge mistakes.

Everyone says baby steps, and that's true, but he's made great strides since last season. Consider that he improves as much in the next two years. That's something to look forward to.

He's not there, not close. But he's 22 and seemingly doing things the right way. I'm excited to see where it leads.

  • i was liking manziel until he made some typical 'johnny' mistakes. man if we only had some WRs that could out-jump the defenders.......(HMMM)

nothing has changed. mccown will be the starter and until manziel out performs in practice, on the field, or in the film room that's the way it'll be barring injury.

what we really need to talk about is the RB position......

    but that's for another thread.

  • Josh McCown is nothing more than Jake Delhomme or Trent Dilfer. He's a washed up journeyman.

Manziel needs to sit and learn the NFL for one more year.

By the way, it would be nice to see him get some reps with the first team in a meaningless game.

Josh McCown is an absolute fuckin bore

  • Manziel should and will start this season, for all our sakes hopefully game 1 vs. New York. There is no reason to continue to keep our best playmaker on the sidelines in favor of another journeyman retread. Manziel should start just like Bortles, Carr and Bridgewater. He's already a year behind those other guys. Quit delaying the inevitable and play the fucking kid.

    Glad you're not in charge.

  • 1 preseason game at a time.

It's hard to tell what anything translates to in preseason lineups. For example, we're not going to have Bademosi starting at corner over Joe Haden when a QB the caliber of Taylor completes a 3rd and long throw into a first down conversion.

What I saw from Manziel was encouraging progress with room for improvement. Like Gruden said - it was against a lot of blitzing. His critics will ask who did he play against almost as if they don't want you to acknowledge he was throwing to backups and counting on backup pass protectors (some that won't make this team). Most of his mistakes can be corrected with film, coaching and reps.

Now there were some things to evaluate like accuracy of throws, arm strength, pocket patience/presence, play action fakes, etc. That bootleg to the left absolutely froze that outside pass rusher making it easy to get around him to complete the throw. I don't think that McCown looked any more patient in the pocket than Manziel did vrs Buffalo. That said, I'm not going to waste much time worrying about it just yet.

The QB situation will play itself out. No need for time lines. We have a 22 year old QB that should be a red shirt senior looking like the exciting football player/QB Joe Thomas described. Unlike Weeden at age 30, he already knows he can throw a football out of bounds when/if the situation presents it. Even better, football looked like it was fun for him again. The best way for the game to slow down for him is via the preparations we've been reading about and reps/experience.
