only option would be the IR designated return.... and no way are we doing that.

    It's worth some consideration.

If the elbow is that bad, then regular IR is an option. The designated for return option is too valuable for a back up QB with an "injury" of apparently indeterminate duration.

Assuming Pryor makes the 53, and I still think that is likely, McCown and JM with Pryor as the emergency QB is still viable. If that means Pryor is the defacto #2 for the first couple weeks, then I could live with that.

I don't think they want any part of Pryor playing QB, I think a viable option is cutting Thad and adding Devlin (or somebody else they like) to the practice squad to pick up Johnny's practice reps and keep his arm fresh.

I think Manziel may add a little value to the roster from the perspective of coming in for two point conversions. But Thad would be just as good at leading the team on Sundays if Josh goes down, IMO

  • I just don't understand where anyone is getting any type of information that this is a serious issue. I get that it's "chronic" but no one recommended surgery or extended therapy. Pettine has said he's close to throwing and we still got 11 days before his services would be needed if at all. That's already coming off of nearly two weeks rest. Is there a story I missed somewhere other than pure speculation that says differently? If so the PUP talk is meaningless.

Don't be surprised if the Browns pick up somebody that is on the cut list. A Zac Dysert, Taj Boyd type.

  • I see they have expanded practice squads to up to ten players ... so the Devlin/developmental guy on the PSis obably the way they will go if Johnny can "handle a football".

    Zombo

  • Pettine was discussing the number of QB's he would have on " the squad" yesterday. He said that he would have no issue of carrying 3 or 4. Now what he interprets as "the squad" could have a couple of different meanings.

So with Thad gone Devlin on the PS and JM "resting", then who's the emergency #2 for a couple games?

If Manziel can't actually play for two weeks, they aren't cutting Thad.

    Zombo

  • Personally I'd risk that Josh can stay upright for two weeks...

Again, where the hell are you reading that he can't play for two weeks? Seriously is there something I don't know because everything I've read said this really isn't a big deal.

  • Pryor holds the keys to this whole QB 3 mess and I hope he drives the bus into Chicago for a score. 1. Mc Cown 2.Manziel 3.Pryor played QB for Flipo. Thad and Devilin will be cut in a other need 53. When #1 or #2 goes down, theirs always that guy on the street before Pryor. JM throwing right handed before the final cut down will be key also and we may hear all about it..

    It was Tour's hypothetical situation.

Not being able to throw a football for three weeks is a red flag.

The Browns are saying he should be fine. Johnny is saying he'll be fine.

But a "chronic problem" that shuts you down for three weeks before the season starts is something to raise an eyebrow over ... and it very well could effect a roster spot ... especially if this is a recurring thing and he can't can't take full practice reps.

Thanks-As I understand though, he could be throwing a football if need be but they are intentional in making him not do it. I'm completely fine with him not working on it during a time that doesn't matter at all. If he starts resting during the regular season, I'll start worrying. But honestly, we can get a guy like Thad Lewis whenever we want. I could be wrong but I don't think the phone will be ringing off the hook if we cut him and can snag him in a pinch.

Of course, none of this matters because McCown will rise like a phoenix to a Kurt Warner esque Super Bowl run, right? right??

  • We have no idea if Pryor will make the cut or not but if the bosses have already determined they're gonna keep him then have him play wr the first half, rest him 3rd qtr. and throw him behind center for the 4th.

I'm only basing this on Manziel's elbow being worse than we want, which I don't believe. If he can't play and Pryor is forced to backup McCown then it'll be stack the box time again so he might as well throw some in a preseason game just for practice. Don't see this happening at all but what the hell?

Brad Johnson/Trent Dilferesque more probably. They got their rings later in their careers on teams where defense dominated. Warner's SB ring came earlier in his career and he was the trigger to an offensive cog....plus he went on to lead 2 more teams to the SB....losing both in the last seconds. McCown would not be that guy.

Yes it was... and it came from the drastic reduction of the hypothetical, 6-week, PUP non-option...

  • Jon Gruden 'very concerned' about Johnny Manziel's elbow tendinitis

    http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2015/09/jon_gruden_on_johnny_manziels.html

"Hopefully it's nothing severe, but I'd be very concerned anytime a young quarterback or any quarterback is on the shelf for arm reasons," Gruden said. "I haven't seen that anywhere else in pro football this year."

Gruden agreed with Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo that Manziel's three-quarter release can put undue stress on the elbow.

"He does have a lot of different awkward deliveries that he makes," Gruden said. "I mean he is almost double-jointed at times. He'll be running to his left, throw the ball against the grain awkwardly, side-armed."

Last comment makes me wonder if the deep ball to Shane Wynn aggravated the elbow...

  • Zombo very concerned too.

Cant get near that guy without a red flag smacking you in the face.

    Z

  • anyone calling QB as the first pick next year?

  • ^^^^ Zombo, That's just damn Funny..(wait for it)
