  • Tour, you're the only one that hates quotes of long posts as much as I do. So I won't do it here.

I don't know how good of a job PFF is doing, but I know they're the only ones actually doing that job. I can't watch and evaluate every player on every play and their stuff generally reflects the truth so I trust it (although it's also very useful for busting up incorrect narratives).

PFF had Joe at a 0 too so attaboy. Not trying to relitigate that game, just wanted to give my perspective on Johnny's performance last week so I had to give that long preface.

Don't see anything else to respond to. Glad to see your second look of the game came a little closer to matching my thoughts of it as well.

He might be a tad short, but supposedly his hands are abnormally large, so I don't get where they say he has small hands.

^ same here man, I remember them saying he had the biggest hands of every qb in his draft class

except for carr they all pretty much do suck.

    He sucks too.

carr is leaps and bounds better than your boy. not even close.

  • His hands are massive. Shows the level of effort put into the article.

  • All of the QBs from that class are. That doesn't say much though.

The preface was fine. Helped me understand your perspective.

Thanks for the attaboy... 19 more and I can cancel an "aw-shit."

That said I have to assume that my having an identical grade to PFF is purely coincidental as I know nothing of their system... although I am curious. But I'm happy to hear I'm in the ball park or at least follow a similar trend.

I googled "grading O-line play" when I decided to try doing this a year ago and the most beneficial info I found was around guarding against the need to assign a grade for every player on every play. It amazed me for a while that it was true for so many so much of the time.

Most of he rest of what I do I made up as I went along. Maybe I came close to reinventing a wheel.

Some items were added to satisfy particular requests or points of debate. The Box Counts are an example of the latter. This year I've added how many of the box turned into rushers on Pass plays, but did not tally that data.

Just out of curiosity... what was PFF's 2014 Indy grade for JT?

  • Carr has surprised me with the promise he shows. Not there yet, but shows promise.

For Teddy B it was his durability I questioned... don't see a build for the long haul there.

FWIW... I had the same concern with RG3.

JM? Had the better build, but seemed so much more reckless that it was negated to my mind. But bigger issue for me was a lack of game discipline... and later self-discipline.

Seems the latter issue has been addressed.

Now the former is in progress, but I always wondered if you could rein in that which made him special at A&M and still have an effective QB.

    We shall see...

  • It was +1.8. +1.6 pass blocking, +.9 run blocking, -.7 penalties.

There's an easily accessible "how we grade" tab at the site. It makes sense for the most part but there are a few holes which I actually emailed them about yesterday.

You inspired me to start grading A&M's OL. I started with Arizona State because I heard our OL was terrible and I wanted the truth.

I use PFF's system for it. At least insofar as I understand said system. I give everyone run and pass blocking grades.

  • So the raw total was +3.6... I had him at +2. Their -0.7 for penalties is interesting... maybe a 5-yarder?

Anyway I looked at their "How We..." page. Interesting... and now I can't swear I did not see it before and it gave me the -2 to +2 range I use. Difference being I don't grade in decimals to two significant digits.

I figured they must involve multiple regradings of the same games, but am surprised that they are "reviews" and not independent grades. With multiple independents you could then do an Olympic style toss out the high and the low before you average. Also would give ample data for QA detecting statistically easy or hard graders for coaching or replacement.

While I do no "normalization" obviously their grading of all teams all games requires it. But I have thought I should do some... at least normalizing for plays per game, which clearly can depress totals as seen in the 2nd 2014 Cinci game.

Good stuff... Have fun setting up your scoring. Only advice I'd give is don't worry about getting it "right" from the start. What you record and how you record it is going to evolve... primarily from questions you or others raise as you try to use it. Soon you'll find you have your own abbreviations for all kinds of info.

An example of my "code": 3W2TR/L

Translation: 3 Wide Receivers 2 of which are tight to the right, one goes in motion to the left

Funniest part is I rarely use that info anymore, but it's a habit that takes next to no time so WTF...

  • All this means doodly squat once it get punched in the face. I'd rather see if johnny can perform consistantly from the pocket as I expect the Titans will want him to.

  • McCown is not cleared.

If Mariota and Winston can start, then why not start Manziel? How can he ever improve or learn how to become a pocket passer sitting.

The college game has changed and so has the quarterbacks coming into the NFL. The coaches now have to adapt their game plans to ease these spread QBs into the offense. It will take some QBs longer to learn the playbook and to adjust.

But no one knows how Manziel will progress if he sits. It's time to throw him into the fray and live by it. The Browns should stop with the recycled backups that move from team to team and find out now if they have a true franchise QB

In other words devise a scheme around what he does best and bring him along week to week. You never know. And we will never know if all he does is come in when McCown gets hurt.

I would leave Manziel in there no matter what. He has to develop.

And hopefully his elbow is not a lingering problem or Austin Davis will be next man up.

God,I hope the defense shows up!

  • Manziel vs Dick LeBeau/Ray Horton

Average defensive lineup trained by great coaches.

Time to grab the socket set, take off the training wheels, and push Manziel down the street.

Yep-nothing to lose here. Everything to gain.

  • good to know a guy has big hands. that can really help you out in life.

  • Waiting to hear how all the good plays Manziel made today weren't really good plays. I'll be back later

  • Damn backyard play that only JM and Bengi knew about sealed the deal. Love magic. 😛

  • Ok... one week later and I think my post is even more true now than it was last week.

Was JFF the next incarnation of Tom Brady? Of course not.. But he ran the offence efficiently and even had what I would call 2 or 3 flashes of absolute brilliance.. 2 of the 3 going to Benjamin.. Especially the last pass.. That was pure Johnny Football... 9 times out of 10, when you have a DB come with a free blitz like that, you either see a quick outlet pass a sack or a throw out of bounds... Johnny kept it alive by executing a Tarkington'esque move and 2 seconds later a TD.

It wasn't all peaches and cream.. He put the ball on the ground twice.. He got freaking lucky as shit I think early in the 3rd quarter when he tossed one up into double coverage and should have been picked....

But he ran an entire game and did way more good than bad... Honestly I don't think that Josh could have done much better.. So what do we gain by putting Josh In next week if he clears his concussion?

I think we run with Johnny the rest of the year and see what happens.... OLINE looked great again, and our Defense finally stepped up in the end instead of crumbling....

JFF didn't win this game.. Special teams a great defense and solid running won this game.. JFF did was he was supposed to fucking do... Follow the game plan and don't lose the game for us.

He did that and added a few flashes of that Johnny Football that the Texas A & M fans were talking about last year....

    GO BROWNS!!

    BoBPOUnd!

I think that our coaches need to let Johnny have a bit more flexibility... The fourth and one dive into the middle was the perfect opportunity to run play action and let him bootleg for the first down and maybe more... Yes. He has to play under control. But Johnny has to have more permission to be Johnny.
